“Very good”
Reviewed February 8, 2014

This is actually a review for the Maria's Cafe in Ipoh, which is the original outlet (the PJ one came later). Strangely the Ipoh one does not have its own listing under Ipoh.

Maria's Cafe has been in Ipoh for around a decade. It has had some ups and downs but the management has now placed more priority in re-establishing its excellence. Our group of 9 went there for dinner and we had a very nice meal on the overall. Maria's prides itself on the steaks and justifiably so. We ordered a Wagyu 5, the ribeye and a black angus. All were good quality and done perfectly. It was my first time trying Wagyu steak and I can now understand the fuss about it - tender, flavorful and tasty. Others had the lamb shank, which they also gave thumbs up to.

The desserts were also similarly nice. We had the tiramisu, carrot walnut cake and moist chocolate cake.

Given the quality of the food, the price is reasonable and I would certainly return!

“Very friendly staff, but food not too special.”
Reviewed January 14, 2014

We went to this restaurant after reading the previous reviews, and we really were looking for a good steak. The restaurant is in a 5 year-old complex, on the third floor, were all the neighbouring retail spaces are (still?) empty. It has no wheelchair acces for sure, be prepared for some stairs.
The staff welcomed us as if we were old friends, very friendly. We ordered mushroom soup as starter, which was ok, but not special. Price for this was 9 RM.
Then the steaks: 1 grained rib eye and 1 black angus. The advise was to have at least 200 grams of the black angus, so I asked for that, but then the waiter told me the minimum they have is 230 grams. Why offer 200 grams then? Anyway, both steaks were cooked as ordered, being medium rare. This is very good, as in a lot of restaurants they overcook the meat. But the taste of both different pieces of meat was rather similar, and a bit too sweet actually. Probably they use a sweet glazing which gives the sweet taste, and they used the grill, but no grill taste, only a grill print could be seen on the steak. The spaghetti bolognaise we ordered for the kid was good by the way, she loved it!
After the main course we ordered desert. Nothing wrong with these, ice-cream and moist chocolate cake, big portion.
Afterwards they asked to fill out a form with name and email etc. and you will receive discount next time if you manage to have 2 others dine in their restaurant on your recommendation. I filled in the form, but will not recommend this restaurant to any of my friends, it's not worth to drive up there if you have nice restaurants closer to you. Only if you live nearby and like to have a steak I would go there.
By the way: if you order french fries as a side, ask to bring them with the steak, we got them when we were still eating the soup...

“Great place for steaks”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

My wife and I first dined at Maria's Cafe in Greentown, Ipoh, Malaysia some months back. Then we heard that they had a 2nd outlet in Damansara Perdana in Petaling Jaya and decided to experience the food at this place.
Both places served excellently prepared steaks on a consistent basis. My personal choice is for a Black Angus steak. The place is relatively small but comfortable and it has a relaxing atmosphere. The service and attention by the manager and staff is commendable. They are also knowledgeable about the type of steaks available at the outlet and do give good advice when asked. I plan to go there soon for another great steak experience.

“Probably the best steakhouse in Kuala Lumpur”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

Maria's is the place to go for the whole package - excellent food, service and ambience. One of the best steakhouses and western restaurant in KL (or PJ, since they are located at Petaling Jaya, to be precise).

We came as a big group with high expectations on their red meat, since they are popular for their steaks. Though, we've read through blogger reviews and through friends recommendations that they serve overall decent main course and home-made desserts.

The wagyu 5 steak was phenomenal; doneness was correct, meat quality was good with marbling that suits my preference, and the seasoning really blend well and brings out the flavor and natural sweetness of the meat. It was better than the kobe that I had in Japan. Thumbs up to Maria's Steakhouse!

Each of us tried different mains; chicken parmigiana, lamb cutlets, spaghetti, burger, salmon. To our surprise, all the mains were prepared really well; delicious. We enjoyed the ox-tail soup and onion soup very much. And my partner loved the prune cake and tiramisu! Service staffs were attentive.

Highly recommended place for steaks for those who are visiting Kuala Lumpur and Petaling Jaya.

“kobe beef”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

This place is not easy to locate as it is on the 1st floor and the signboard is partially hidden. Access is not easy as you need to take the right lift.
Food is good especially the steak. For kobe beef lovers, there are different grades available at different prices, of course. Good value.
Pasta dishes are priced on a high side.
Service is good and they serve great coffee with desserts.
