“Should have been beautiful but......”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2012

The hotel has only been open since 2008 but it looks like no maintenance has been done since then - everywhere looks a little tired and just a lttle bit of work would make it as beautiful as I am sure it was when it first opened.

The staff are really friendly and helpful but, if you are eating in the hotel, expect to pay highly inflated prices - much better to walk out and find other places to eat.

Room Tip: If you are travelling without children, its much quieter in the spa wing.

Great resort just 30 mins away from the centre of Kuching, lush surroundings with plenty of trails nearby or just chill by the pool as we did. Great kids pool with a few small slides kept our three very happy, the beach is also nice and clean but as a few jelly fish had washed ashore we kept out of the water this time, but usually it is nice and warm to swim in, also good fun with a body board during the monsoon waves. Breakfast was really good with a wide selection of western and local tastes. The Spa is under renovation and I never found the gym, in general the information was a little lacking, we did see a few table tennis tables but no real kids club to mention. The friendly barman at the pool side bar looked after our every needs, so a special thank you goes to Arthur, all the staff were helpful and attentive. Overall a good resort but not quite 5* and neither are we ;-)

Room Tip: upper floor sea-view rooms are a little less fusty as the lower level (so we were told!)

I had nice and pleasant stay at Damai Puri. Wish I had stay longer. Some comment from me.
1. Check in without delay. Great.
2. Room is clean and comfortable. Just the sink in the bathroom got clog.
3. Swimming Pool is great. Feels warm to swim in there...
4. I tried the gym. Some of them are out of order. Dissappointed.
The spa village is under renovation during my stay. Hmmm....

Overall is I have great stay there. 4 out of 5.

First off I would definitely come back here.

The hotel offers excellent value, but a luxury resort it is not. The hotel benefits from being a short walk away from Mount Sentubong (an easy jungle trail and a harder mountain trail) and the Sarawak cultural village. It also benefits from being very close to a very inexpensive and well maintained hawker centre where you can eat very cheaply. The hotel's own restaurants are not cheap and the variety is limited.

So certainly enough to keep you occupied for 2-3 days. There's more if you want to make use of the services offered by Aquabase, located in the hotel grounds e.g. scuba diving. Other than that there does not appear to be the jet-skiing, parasailing type activities available in other resorts.

Around Easter, weekdays, it is fairly quiet (your own personal resort!) and hotel facilities and staffing seem to reflect this. While the hotel seems to offer a children's activity centre in some promotional material, this was closed when we were there. Also the kids pool has little shade so from late morning to early afternoon is unusable. They also chlorinate from 7pm onwards. The hotel shop also does not sell a bucket and spade, so if you have small kids, come prepared! We improvised by making use of Aquabase's snorkelling lessons for our 7 year old. No one seemed to mind her being in the adult pool when taking lessons. Otherwise there could have been a problem for us, since the kiddies pool only seems to be good enough for paddling. It also has some slides.

The rooms themselves are neat and tidy, with good quality wood flooring in the bedrooms and seemingly recently renovated bathrooms (Spa wing) - the cheaper one. However some of the management decisions seem curious. The sink/tap combination seems designed to splash lots of water on the worktop and the quality of the bathroom doors (or lack of) seems designed to ensure that hooks etc. will fall off. The sheets and towels are clean, but well worn. The room cleaner could have been more fastidious. In one of the rooms we stayed at the new taps had been painted over at time of installation - you'll come across such inattention to detail elsewhere. It's not really off-putting given the relatively low price - but it is a shame that facilities could have so easily been made better quality.

As others have commented wifi is only available in the lobby. But then again you come to such places to relax, so not really bothered by this.

Do bear in mind that the resort is a good 40 minutes from Kuching and if you want to go to parks etc. around Kuching this resort may be further out than hotels in Kuching itself.

As for the staff. In my experience and that of my family they were attentive, helpful and excellent throughout. Again because there were relatively few guests at this time of year that may have helped.

Room Tip: Avoid the ground floor near the swimming pool, unless you are an exhibitionist.

Was there for a long weekend to get away from the busy city life. The hotel is 45 minutes away from the city / airport with light traffic.

The hotel rooms on first floor we stayed in are spacious and breezy facing the pool with sea view. No WiFi / internet services in room apart from lobby area, but who's complaining we were on holiday and supposed to be gadget and laptop free!

There is a huge pool that's just next to the beach so plenty of space for everyone. However the one thing you have to get used to is that many people get into the pool for full attire of t-shirt, long track pants adults or children even though there's a notice to inform that only proper swim wear is allowed into the pool! I guess this is the same any where in Malaysia.

Food wise it is quite disappointing. There are 2 restaurants but 1 serves western mixed with local cuisines while the other serves Indian and Thai style cuisines. Don't expect the food to turn out the way you usually have them e.g. butter chicken is served gravy less, in cubes and taste nothing like the real butter chicken. I would recommend the curried fried prawn at least it's tastier but costs RM38 for 8-10 prawn with tail intact. Having a meal at the hotel is super expensive we don't mind if its fantastic but our meal of butter chicken, curried prawn and tasteless mixed veggie and 2 servings of naan [is actually pizza base... no kidding] comes to a total of RM100+. So is the beverage e.g. bottle of 500ml mineral water costs RM4 (from provision store in city we get 1ltr for RM3!!) a glass of screwdriver knock us back by RM25. Don't bother with the wine, it's like drinking vinegar!! Everything else costs money but minimal - a game of table tennis costs RM5.

The Spa Village area is abandoned/closed but the now spa is in fact 3 connecting guest rooms converted into 'spa'. The masseuse I had was rubbish she rushed the massage and sat there just kept rubbing oil onto my forehead and kept asking the other lady if she's done. At the end of my massage I felt like my hair and body is dripping oil. RM150 a pop yet not getting the return expected from a 'spa'.

Would recommend you take the 2-hourly shuttle that costs only RM12 per trip to the city to enjoy cheaper, nicer meal though still considered expensive by Malaysia standards. Kolo Mee RM4.50; Sarawak Laksa [seafood broth with vermicelli and prawns] RM5; Fruit Rojak (salad) RM3-5 depending on serving size. Local cakes and tarts etc. Last bus back to hotel is at 10pm.

Take a cruise along the river or just follow the map and walk around the city. Interesting historical buildings and sites to check out.

Room Tip: Avoid F&B if you can. Prepared for shock when you see fully clothed people in the pool with... I...

we stayed here at the tail end of a 2 week trip around sarawak, the beach was lovely the hotel was a standard beach hotel, but a welcome relaxing spot with lovely staff, not a place for people who like a bit of an atmosphere as it was very quiet we were generaly the only people in the pool but we loved the peace and relaxation!!
also the kids pool is riiiiight round the other side of the hotel so no annoying kids in the adults pool!!

Room Tip: stay in the spa wing!

Location: About 45 minutes to an hour taxi trip from Kuching International Airport costing Rm70 by coupon taxi. The taxi will pass through Kuching City. The resort is at the tip of Santubong Peninsula. Adjacent to another two resort style hotel - Damai Beach Resort and Sabutong Beach Resort.

Transport: As mentioned above, get a coupon costing RM70 from the Coupon Taxi Counter at the arrival Hall. To get from Resort to Airport get the help of hotel staff to get a taxi which will cost about RM85. Much cheaper shuttle vans are available but only at irregular intervals.

Room: Room is cosy and new. Brightly lit with LCD Tv. Rooms face the beach and enjoy a nice and spectacular view from the room each with a varendah. Try request for rooms on the swimming pool wing. The pool is just a between the hotel block and the beach.

Wifi: only available at the lobby. Not detected at the room and even restaurant.

f &B: there are two restaurants serving mainly western and Asian cuisine. 2 lounges serving wide range of liquors with pool tables.

Overall: Great stay and vale for money although the only set back to me is the lack of Internet connectivity!

Room Tip: Ask for rooms on the swimming pool wing.
