We are family with 2 kids (9&11) and stayed in the treehouse. The facilities in the room were basic but clean and adequate with a/c keeping us cool at night. Mornings we were greeted with monkeys, otters and squirrels. There are 2 beaches to use at the resort, do note the resort is open to the public for a small fee, and we found on the weekends that the resort was taken over by many locals who broke the tranquility of the day. So we went out kayaking for 25 MYR per hour, and the seas were quite calm allowing us to discover the coastline at our leisure. The other activity we did was the Jungle Trail which is a 1.5-2hr trail where the highlight is the waterfall at the midway mark.

The city is about 40-50 mins away and cost us about 60MYR (remember to negotiate before getting into the cab). We recommend you visit the Top Spot Food Court for cheap and tasty seafood. For a family of 4 we spent about 120MYR for a dinner of prawns, crabs, satays, etc.....

We also took time to visit the Semmengoh Orangutan Park, and this is about 1.5hrs away from the resort, and note timings for the feedings is at 9am or 3pm. We found out the morning session provides the best opportunity to view the orangutans.

Lastly we recommend that you visit the Sunday market for some fresh tropical fruits and souvenirs.

Stayed at Permai for 2 nights in a Treehouse - as there were 8 of us we had the opportunity to see 4 different treehouses. No 1 needs some work as the bed wasn't great and the outside appearance hasn't been clad in bark like all the others; was also a little smaller too. No 5, No 6 & No 10 were all great - only real problem was the balcony sliding doors don't close very well in any of the Treehouses due to swelling in the heat. The air-con was a real plus as it was far hotter than we expected (thought we'd have a nice ocean breeze).

Wouldn't want to stay for too long as the menu is a bit limited, especially as they seem to run out of things but the food was generally quite good. Information was a bit light on at check-in; we were given breakfast vouchers and the first morning helped ourselves to the buffet without realizing that we could order from the menu too (something we wern't told but figured out after watching others). Flying fox was a bit of fun for the kids but be warned - you hang from your arms (with a safety strap attached to your waist) so you wouldn't want to have a problem with your arms/wrist/shoulders.

Overall very relaxing and enjoyable and a lovely way to fee part of nature - if you are planning to visit the Sarawak Cultural village do so from here; we stayed in Kuching for a few nights before coming to Permai & paid for a trip out there not realizing that they are right next to Permai. We saw numerous monkey's, squirrels, birds, spiders & even had a snake come visit our staircase one evening. Not sure who was more startled - him or me!

We stayed for 4 nights at Permai and overall the experience was very good. As there were 4 of us we had a cabin with 6 beds, which was very basic but generally clean. My only complaint to the room would be the bed sheets; every single one was really badly stained and looked really grubby. No a/c in the cabins just ceiling fans, but it was fine for us as we live in Singapore so are used to the humidity! We were actually a bit cold, as the forest setting keeps it cool.
Breakfast was pretty basic in the resort but OK, however dinner was terrible and we did not eat there again after the first night. Cold food and each meal came out 15 minutes apart, as if they only had one gas ring! We walked next door to the Damai resort and their restaurant was pretty good, also the Beach sea food restaurant which is a free bus ride away organised by the hotel.
Lots of wildlife to be seen around the resort; snakes, squirrels, spiders, monkeys, scorpions.
We did a couple of trips; dolphin watching (saw lots of Irawaddy's) and Satang Island (we all got attacked by the sand flies though, and could not sleep for the itching!). We arranged a taxi from the resort to Semeggoh to see the Orangutans and that was brilliant, do not miss!

Management response:Responded July 5, 2011

Dear DubaiCurly,
Thank you for your feedback on our resort. Firstly allow me to apologise for the inconsistency in service in the cafe. It is something we are addressing and will overcome it in the coming month. With regards to the bed sheets and the rust stains you mentioned, I do sincerely apologise for any discomfort they caused during your stay with us. I am pleased to announce that as of Saturday last week, our order of new bedsheets arrived. At the same time the fans in the bedrooms, which we identified as the source of the stains are gradually being replaced with those with plastic blades as they have recently become widely available in our city. We do sincerely hope you will return to Permai in the near future to experience for yourself the changes and improvements we have made. It is our objective to continuously evolve to provide better service to all our guests whilst facilitating the enjoyment and appreciation of our natural world.

We stayed at Permai for a week on our honeymoon. It was exactly what we had hoped for.
On arrival we were quickly checked in and made our way to our treehouse (Number 1). The treehouse is the size of a basic hotel room, it was clean and (mostly) insect free. The ensuite bathroom had a good shower and the most important feature in the room worked brilliantly - the aircon.
From the balcony we could see the main beach to the left and other treehouses to the right, but we felt completely hidden in the trees and the only time we ever felt overlooked was when monkeys were swinging past.
The treehouse was a perfect haven to come back to after a day's jungle-trekking and at night the only noise was that of the insects in the rainforest.
The resort itself is well maintained and especially when we first arrived extremely quiet. As other reviews have said - the resort gets busy at the weekend, but we planned trips out on the Saturday and Sunday and so by the time we got back in the early evening the place had settled down again. That said, it was quite nice having other people around some of the time anyway.
The two beaches are very clean and quiet and the sea felt very safe. The jungle pool is the perfect place to cool off.
We did the jungle trek which took a couple of hours - with lots of stopping to take photos. We didn't see much wildlife but the walk itself is great with a lovely waterfall and a few rope bridges for entertainment along the way. We also had a close encounter with a large green snake which seemed as concerned about us as we were about it.
Some reviews of the cafe are not great, but we found the food was excellent - especially the malaysian dishes. The "Roti Canai" comes highly recommended (but spicy).
There are very few downsides to Permai. We went on one of the boat trips which was quite expensive but a really nice day out. We would recommend hiring a car if you're staying for a while though - as we might have felt a bit claustrophobic without being able to get out of the resort and make our own way to Bako, Semmengoh and Kuching city. The resort staff (especially Azhar in the reception) were very helpful in drawing us maps and telling us other places to go and eat etc. There's not much to do at night - but for us that was one of the main attractions. The bar is quiet and relaxed and they just let you get on with enjoying the jungle. If you have lots of books and travel scrabble then there's nothing more you could need.
If you aren't up for a few bugs, the possibility of snakes, and jungle heat then you'll have a hard time in Permai. But if you want to stay in a place that's not as sanitised as many resorts and makes you feel like you're staying right in the jungle, but with an ensuite and a bar 50 yards away then this is the most perfect place in the world.

The hotel is nicely integrated into nature. Its huts are well distributed in the rainforest and there is plenty of nature in between and around it. We even had the luck to observe some monkeys from our room in the morning.
On the other hand, the 'jungle pool' and the activities on the hotels beaches attract a number of families, groups and even day visitors. There is quite some action and you must search for a place to quetly enjoy nature. However, we really enjoyed the mangrove tour and the tour to Bako National Park organised by the hotel.

Room Tip: The treehouses are great.

Permai Rainforest Resort is at the base of Mount Santubong, 1 hour’s drive from Kuching and right on the beach overlooking the South China Sea. Our prearranged driver met us at Kuching airport and delivered us comfortably to the resort.

We stayed in the tree house rooms (6 metres off the ground) where the rooms are spacious, all fully screened, comfy queen size bed, a/c, fan, fridge, tea/coffee making facilities, good bathroom, clean toilet, with bedroom access out to a small balcony. Too much vegetation in front of the balcony for a panoramic ocean view even though only 15-20 metres from beachfront.

For a few days we relaxed doing the jungle walks, beach tracks and swimming in the refreshing jungle pool. Only 400metres from the Sarawak Cultural Village and nearby resorts. No walking access to local restaurants or hawker food, however a nearby seafood restaurant (10 minute drive) will provide pickup and return service to dine at their waterfront establishment.

Highly recommend the Permai Rainforest Resort and their friendly staff.

Great get away from the city and good experience in staying on the tree house. Though it is not completely back to nature as the tree houses are air-conditioned have modern amenities.
