Sarawak Museum - Old wing:
This is a museum in the old style. Many of the exhibits were donated or originated in the early days of the 20th century, and look like they have achieved a great deal of mileage since. The natural history displays are original and unique and there is much by the way of historic and ancient artifacts. While this museum might not be as trendy as the modern new wave of "experiential" entertainment centers one gets the impression that the museum deserves a special preservation itself .. It could be put into a museum itself.

Sarawak Museum - New wing:
The new wing is just across the road, by a overhead walkway, from the old wing,, and well worth a stroll. This museum is in slightly better condition than its elder member, and features exhibitions of more an ethnic and Malaysian historic nature. The interesting exhibition here is the passing over display 'Depart in Style' of the different approaches to death and its mourning in the diverse communities of Sarawak.

This museum complex came highly recommended and we were a little underwhelmed with the exhibits in the historically significant buildings clustered together on the hillock. The art museum was basically a textile museum with limited appeal although nicely air conditioned. Then we decided to cross the footbridge to explore a final building and lo and behold it was the mother lode of them all. A special exhibition of dying and death rituals is not to everyone's taste but the upstairs area redeemed the recommendation in our eyes. The museum shop is a museum in itself and the cafe is first class. Be sure to treat yourself to one of their smoothies!

The range of displays in the museum is wide however the lack of explanatory information and the need for some maintenance of the displays detracts from the overall experience. It's a shame to see that the official museum for Sarawak doesn't show the respect deserving of a land with such a diverse history, fauna & flora.

The four museums are definatley worth a visit. I would recommend asking one of the friendly staff a few questions. We did and were given a hour and a half personal tour and history of this fabulous place (and well worth the small tip we gave which was clearly much appreciated but not asked for).

This museum looks like some in my childhood. Old and with many animals models. Interesting for children and also for adults. Free of charge and good AC in it. It's a good start for you to know Sarawak and for this building it's very nice.
