The waterfront is a pleasant and safe walk best taken early or late in the day when it might be a little cooler. The parklands feature a swathe of refreshing greenery with an easy view along the Sarawak River where a wide range of water craft from traditional water taxis, dilapidated and brightly painted fishing boats and smart tourist craft might be seen at the same time. The spectacular political house the Dun dominates the skyline from the north, but you won't get too many locals talking proudly about it. Apparently the DUN, which cost an arm and a leg or many (actually about US$100 mill), is only used sporadically ... And what's the point when the great leader, a public servant of more than 30 years has skimmed of multi billions? (some locals said US$7 bill) "But what can a mere local struggling from day to day do"? was a familiar refrain.

Perhaps a 1.5 mile walk if you do the whole thing. Very pleasant along the river, a few restaurants along the way and people going about their daily lives.

One thing for sure, I was quiet surprised that this long river esplanade is very quite and peaceful. It is located just opposite the main bazaar where you can find the famous Sarawak 'kek lapis'. I was there around 6.00pm and it was about sunset. The view was very impressive and the river breeze was refreshing.

This riverside walk was an unexpected bonus and a pleasant spot for a leisurely early morning or evening walk. The area is well sign posted and will take you to the city's information centre in the old courts complex which also houses travel agencies. You can book an evening cruise ( make sure you get a 10% discount) or take a sampan across the river to sample local cakes at the famous Miri Bakery. The fare is an affordable 50 cents pp each way. Don't forget to look down as there are historical rondels all along the pathway. The Esplanade also affords some great photo ops of the river and impressive buildings on the opposite shore. Of course, snack stalls abound and the Bistro cafe is worth consideration for refreshments or a meal.
