“Good base for exploring Kuching and surrounds”
Reviewed August 2, 2007

We stayed for a week in July after booking direct on the hotel website. Rooms were reasonably sized and comfortable and we had a room on the 16th floor so we got a good view up and down the Sarawak river, but the apartment block directly opposite spoiled the view a bit. Very reasonably priced if you take advantage of the web 14 day advance rate. Staff were very friendly and helpful but could be a bit slow sometimes. We only ate breakfast (included) in the hotel and teh buffet was very good and extensive with excellent service. The hotel is ideally located for exploring Kuching and we used CPH travel (about 10min walk from the hotel) for our tours and I would recommend them - knowledeable and helpful guides. We ate three times in the 'Hotspot' seafood court, only 5 mins walk from the hotel, and it was excellent.
Some sites class this hotel as 5*, others 4*. I would rate them as 4*, but having said that I would recommend this hotel as an ideal base for exploring Kuching and surrounds.

We stayed at the Crown Plaza Riverside in Kuching twice in April. Its freindly , helpful staff, very good restaurants, and comfortable rooms make this a perfect place to ease into a new climate and culture.

Tip: There is a english language bookstore in the shopping center next door with a good travel/natural history section.

Tip two: You can walk half a block to the right as you leave the hotel and use the traffic light to cross the road to the riverside, rather than run through fast moving traffic.

Very nicely located right in the middle of the city, 15 minutes by road from the airport, right across the waterfront, some historic attractions and shopping stretches. Very well-maintained rooms (we stayed in the lowest rates rooms and that was great already), good value for money, good service and excellent and inexpensive breakfast spread at the cafe. Allowed early check-in. Strongly recommend.

We read mixed reviews for the hotel but found only good things when we arrived. Its true that the hotel opposite blocked most of our river views but being on the 14th floor we saw all we needed. The lobby staff attended to our check in promptly and we were shown to our room.Being 6'5" tall we were given a larger bed in a very lovely room. The room service was very fast,no more than 15 minutes from phone call to knock on the door.Breakfast was quite good,a nice assortment of both western and asian food. But as usual no pork, instead we had beef bacon.A reasonable size pool with a safe shallow childrens area attached. We felt the hotel was more aligned to the business traveller so we regularly found ourselves all alone in the pool. There is a pool side drink service but at RM$50.00(AUD$20.00) a can of beer we only ordered once. There is a very good multi level department store attached that we found good to shop in.The river was a 2 minute walk across the road and good restaurants nearby. The hotel is in a very good location and we took the opportunity to visit their sister hotel in Damai Beach(25 mins shuttle bus service),a nice beach side hotel.Overall a nice hotel but Kuching was a little too quiet for us especially after the hectic night life in penang.

We booked online for a 3 nite weekend stay at the Crowne Plaza Riverside in Kuching as we had to attend a wedding dinner held there on the Sunday. I had read the reviews, but was'nt expecting much as the room rates were discounted.

Our check-in went smoothly, and in a matter of minutes, we were escorted to our room by a very friendly bell-hop. On our way up, we were greeted with smiles from staff going about their duties. This friendliness continued throughout our stay, and extended to all levels of staff, including the very busy restaurant. They were friendly, polite and extremely helpful and attentive.

Boy were we surprised when we saw our room! It was spacious, very clean, with beautiful views of the river from both floor -to -ceiling windows...ours was a corner room. We had a choice of pillows, though the ones on the generous twin beds suited us just fine. The beds were sooo comfortable, There were complimentary bottles of water, tea and coffee, and a mini fridge that we could choose to have stocked or not. ( As hotel mini-bar prices are notoriously high, this option is a plus, as you can stock an empty fridge with drinks bought at the supermarket next door). Our phone request for an extra towel and more bottles of water was dealt with within 5 minutes!

Breakfast each morning, which was part of the package, was a feast! There was enough variety to have something different each day. Service was excellent, with plates cleared as soon as we had finished the course, and coffee constantly replenished.

On the 2nd morning, we found to our dismay, that we had locked ourselves out of the room. Apparently, once the "Do not disturb" button is switched on, the door cannot be opened from outside. We had forgotten to switch it off when leaving the room! The front desk sorted this out for us while we had breakfast...no hassles!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this hotel, and would have no hesitation choosing it again whenever we visit Kuching.

  • Liked — the friendly and attentive staff
  • Disliked — noisy kids next door on the 1st day, loud enough to carry thro' the connecting door

A very good hotel which lived up to expectations. The chance of getting a river view is restricted because of the Riverbank units in front but we did have a view. The staff were really attentive and although we ate out most of the time, the hotel was not too pricey in our view. The only beef is that our room was not ready at check-in at 4.15pm and it took an hour to complete. Otherwise a great stay and if we went to Kuching again, we would stay again.

Very nice hotel, excellent location. However, the hotel no longer enjoys unobstructed riverview, as Riverbank Suites just built a new house across the street.

We enjoyed a very unique Steamboat BBQ buffet next to the pool. You can BBQ meat and vegetables on a grill on your table, or for larger pieces, have them grilled for you. The staff helped us very nicely selecting ingredients and how to prepare them. A really special dinner that we can highly recommend. Only down point: it was quite hot, as it was outside... casual clothing is recommended.

The Hilton is just next door, this was convenient for us, as we took the shuttle from the Hilton to the Batang Ai Hilton. On returning from Batang Ai, we took the Holiday Inn shuttle to Damai Beach, which also serves the Crowne Plaza, which was again convenient for us.
