“a bit dirty”
Reviewed June 14, 2014

Upon our arrival we were met by the owner who seemed nice enough and were shown to our rooms and were told she would bring blankets etc later when she'd washed them. She never brought them.

Our room was small with two twin bunk beds, the sheets were dirty and there was rubbish on the floor. There was no privacy because the room was like a cubicle so we were worried about leaving valuables in the room unattended. The toilet is disgusting to put it bluntly and the host didn't put any toilet roll in it for two days. The showers are rustic but they were okay for us.

The downstairs was quite chilled and nice, however we felt uncomfortable because the owner got aggressive when we told her we had booked with an outside company for our excursions. We understand this was because of income etc but we literally had no idea that she even did them, she said that we should of seen from all of her pictures on the walls. We didn't know enough ways to say sorry so in the end we just gave up and let her give us a spout on how she is the queen of the people.

This hostel is good for people who maybe have a quick stopover for a night. Cheap hostel, cheap service.

The Nook Guesth... T, Owner at Nook B&B, responded to this review, June 15, 2015
There are 20 guests at the guesthouse, how many of them do you talk to. You mess and throw all your rubbish on the bed, put the ice-cream on the sheet. You and your friend (girl) were very rude to Malcolm and the wife when they ask you where you got the shoe, by not answering them. Any guesthouse would not be left dirty, if the guest keep it clean and respect that there are other guests in the guesthouse too.

I spent four nights at Nook. The guesthouse is in a good location, with restaurants and the river a few minutes walk away. The best part of 'Nook' was the manager, Frankie. I found her so welcoming and helpful. Thank you Frankie for a fantastic, memorable trip:O))

I saw some other reviews here said they did not have keys to their room: I had a key to my room, and also a pass-card key which opened the main door so you can let yourself in through the main door at anytime. This guesthouse felt safe to me. The rooms are basic but at this price I am not complaining, my bedding and towel were clean, as was the kitchen (where you can help yourself to tea/coffee, and use to cook if you want). I would stay here again.

Once again, thanks for such a memorable trip Frankie:O))

The location was ok. The standard room we stayed in was clean but very very small. Basically a mattress on the floor with walls around it and since the walls didn't go all the way to the ceiling and no windows it's more like a box than a room. There's a lock on the door to the room but we didnt get the key. According to the owner everyone staying in the hostel is like family so no need for locked doors ?!? After some persuasion we manage to get our key, wouldn't want to risk our things getting stolen. Not many toilets (could be a problem when fully booked) and some of the showers (only cold water) are located outside on a balcony. Common area/kitchen clean but untidy. However the worst thing about the hostel is the owner. She is lazy, unfriendly, insincere and above all doesn't respond well to criticism. An example: We booked a tour with her, which basically means you pay her and she drives you where you want to go. Big mistake! First of all she wasn't honest about the price. Then when we sat in the car on our way to the first of two locations she said that she didnt want to take us anymore and that she was going to drop us off at the first location and that we could take the bus back. When we got there she changed her mind, acted like everything was fine. It was all a bit strange, to say the least, but we got on with the tour and eventually got to our second stop, a longhouse. She had made it sound that because of her connections she was abel to take us to a more authentic longhouse than the one most tour agencies go to. The truth is that she took us to Annah Rais like everyone else and the family she knew didn't even live in the actual longhouse but in a house in the surrounding village.

I stayed at The Nook for 7 nights, from 9 July 2013 to 15 July 2013. It is basically a no frills guesthouse much like the budget airline I took to fly to Kuching, You get what you pay for and to ask for more would be a tad unreasonable and unfair to the owner who does not charge you an arm and a leg.

Basically, you get a room to sleep in, you feel safe, you have a place to shower, and you can even do your own laundry if you wish to. Now, that's what makes you feel like you're at home - of course, not if you are a multibillionaire. Then, you would probably not mind paying a lot more to stay at the Hilton or Pullman.

The Nook is situated in the heart of Kuching and there is a restaurant downstairs selling various local food like kolo mee, yong tao foo, Sarawak laksa, poh piah, porridge and fried carrot cake. Of course, these might not be the best in Kuching (subjective of course) and if you are a food lover, and want to eat the best of what Kuching has to offer, ask Francesca aka Frankie. She should know.

There is a 7-eleven nearby and Chinatown is just a short walk away - less than ten minutes. The famous Waterfront, and various places of interests and major shopping malls are all within walking distance. The Nook is no doubt a value for money guesthouse for the budget conscious as well as for travellers like Yours Truly who do not believe in paying for a five star hotel only to be outside touring and exploring Kuching from dawn to dusk.

This review shan't be complete and fair without giving the owner/concierge/tour guide/receptionist/cashier/airport pick up driver/Jill of all trades Francesca top marks for her most friendly service.

Since i have been transfer to Kuching, Sarawak a year ago, as an HR Manager for an airline company, i have stayed at 4 guesthouse/service apartment. The Nook is the most trusted guesthouse that i can feel safe while i am away on my travel. This is my 8th month that i am staying with Nook. Why i feel safe is that, only in-house are allowed to come in with the key card. If there is a party or function, the manager always keep an eyes on non-in house guests to make sure the place is keep in order.

My room is always tidy everyday so as, walkway, utilities area, toilet. The last floor that i am staying with are mostly ladies or couple, and its always quiet. With the money we pay, for this place and a breakfast, i don think there is any complaint or demand for more than that.

Nook try to make the place look a bit traditional village house, simple, as its an old building, putting in all the effort to make up this place to look good, but most importantly the place is clean, friendly environment and safe. Spiritual trying to put everyone staying here under one roof with love and respect. I have nothing much to say about Nook, i am happy staying here, and my room is always clean, the floor i am staying is always clean and neat too.

With the money i paid and the service they give me, feeling safe, healthy and clean stay, i have nothing to complaint at all, and i am happy with it. I hope everyone that stay here feels the same too.
