On the way back from Damai we stopped off at the popular Lim Hock Ann Seafood restaurant in Buntal, a small Malay fishing village.

The food was fairly expensive but the taste justified the price. We went there in a family group and had two tables. A large selection of food, nice views of the beach and surrounding coastline. Does get a little hot though as there is no air-conditioning - ceiling fans only, and is open-air at the back and sides, to the beach.

It's in a convenient location for those travelling to and from Damai.

It's located at Buntal kampong, abt 20mins drive from damai beach area. There are many seafood restaurants here, choose anyone will do. Seafood are fresh and cheap in general in Kuching Sarawak. We ordered prawns, fish, oysters, fish stomach soup, veg, rice for 3 pax, bill is RM84. It's interesting to see all races eating together in many eating places in Kuching, a peaceful sight.

This used to be our favourite place to hang out with guests from out of town ,at Buntal, a sleepy fishing village 45 mins away from Kuching town., as we felt the ambience of sitting literally on top of the sea at high tide was a novelty for our visitors. The food used to be quite decent too.

However, recently, we went back thrice and each time we were very disappointed. The quality of the food in terms of freshness, taste and portions have deteriorated tremendously and prices have increased .Moreover, even at high tide, there is hardly any water now that covers the stilts the restaurant is seated upon and the little sea water lapping at the feet of the stilts are muddy and murky. If you happen to be there at low tide, there is a stench of rotting seafood.

After the recent first disastrous meal, we decided to give it another try a few weeks later but was equally dismayed.I even went up to the proprietor to inform him that we were disappointed with the dropping standards. He looked at me and just shrugged his shoulders. We then went back a third time 2 weeks ago and we were just appalled at the general lackadaisical attitude of the staff .The food was also poor-it was either too salty, too oily or stale.Apart from the live crabs, the seafood was not fresh at all!

It's very disappointing indeed when we have been patronising this place for nearly 20 years to realise that their standards have deteriorated over time especially when they know that out here in Buntal, they are in a oligopolistic position for the seafood restaurant business for the likes of guests from the nearby Damai resorts. However, I would not be so complacent if I were the proprietor as there are now more seafood outlets opening up in other seafood villages around Kuching and they sure beat this place hands down!I don't think I would bother driving out here with guests again to have a meal as there are many other options in Kuching.
