“Not the place for us”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

We stayed one night in the Wo Jia Lodge; however, based on the reviews we had originally booked one full week. The rooms and facilities were not well maintained. When we turned the fan on in our room, debris from the ceiling and fan fell onto the bed. The bed was a sheet and an over sized towel for a cover. The shared toilet and shower on the second floor were dirty, the toilet clogged with feces overnight. The one shared sink was located on the opposite side of the lodge and was used for a bathroom and kitchen purposes. The guys who ran the lodge were okay friendly but played rocker music starting at 7 and and slept on the couch in the lounge at night. Unfortunately, it was a little creepy and we checked out the next morning.

I think that you will enjoy this place if you are young, in need of a cheap place to sleep, a shower, and are not going to spend any time hanging out there, or you just want to "have a good time".

My first time in hostel type accommodation and I was well impressed. The staff are super friendly and helpful. The place is spotlessly clean. You feel really secure, double locks on room doors and a coded door at the lodge entrance. Room was quite large and aircon really quiet and effective.
The common room in the lodge looks straight to the river. All in all very happy with my stay. Thanks very much!

We are an active couple in our early 60's that typically travel backpacker style and love it. Unfortunately, this was our first stop after a very long plane flight and we could have done with a few more amenities.
The lodge is perfectly located in the center of town, extremely friendly and helpful staff. The room was tiny. A few hooks to hang clothes, even a nail would have been nice. The bathroom down the hall was fine, pretty clean, but pretty dark. We had a room close to a social area, and it was quite noisy as people returned from dinner. On the other hand, it was very close to the bathroom which was nice.
A lovely little hotel, very affordable, worth every penny and then some. It was more us than the hotel. Just not a good fit for this stay.

Nice location just on the main bazaar very easy to get to the museum area and Bus terminal. You can have a very good view from the public space of the lodge. This is a lovely wood house with the good price for budget travelers. Several bathroom so you can always find one available. You can also cook by yourself in the kitchen.

Only one not too good was the strange sounds of something like some big fan or machine I don't know even in the evening.

Very nice and friendly staff and helped me a lot. I stayed for 3 nights and I really loved here.

If I go Kuching again I will still stay there!

Room Tip: Single room has no window so maybe it's not ok for someone.

Great stuff, friendly, accommodating, allways willing to help, trustworthy… Accommodation is not luxurious (nobody expects that) but always clean, enough toilets and showers, kitchen free to use, tasty breakfast included. We were completely satisfied and we will definitely recommend to stay there!

Very nice place to stay! Try to book in advance though. The location is prime! The staff is very friendly and they have the cheapest rooms as far as we know in kuching! Very good value for money, clean, atmosphere is great and again very friendly staff!

I stayed at Wo Jia for 7 weeks on my own from June to August whilst doing my medical school elective at Sarawak General Hospital. The location is ideal - very close to all the major shops and eateries along the waterfront area of Kuching, about 10 minutes to the bus station and around a 25 minute walk to the hospital.

The room I stayed in was on the basement/ground floor level and was relatively clean and well decorated with good air conditioning.

The bathroom facilities let the lodge down somewhat (hence 4 rather 5 stars) - the bottom floor has a clean and modern shower and toilet but the nature of where they are located in the air-well means they are frequented by quite a lot of insects. The toilet on the main (reception) level is grim (poor flushing mechanism, very old and worn) and in need of replacing and the three showers on this level could do with some redecoration but function well (I did not venture to the top floor so cannot comment on the facilities there). The kitchen area was extremely basic and does have occasional rats, but given how cheap the local eateries are there is little point in cooking for oneself.

The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable of the local area. The laundry service on offer is fairly priced and reliable. I was offered a generously reduced rate as a long-term guest which made the stay very good value.
