“great location”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

This hotel has a great location, right on river and central. Quite an attractive lobby and restaurant which gave a good impression. However that ended for us when exiting the lift on the 7th floor in the older wing, upon seeing the filthy greatly stained carpets all down the hallways. Desperately needs replacing. Room had brillant view over river and was spacious, but furniture very tired and needing refurbishing. Comfy bed though. We found the service not as good at this hotel as the others we had stayed at on our trip. They seemed understaffed in reztUrant for breakfast.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river. Beautiful at night.

I was in Kuching to visit some friends last month to celebrate the Gawai Festival. On returning from the interior (where the courtesy granted to their guests by the longhouse people was second to none), I was stocked to encounter the "cold" treatment given to me upon my check-in at the front office.

Granted it was a busy period for them (with some major event happening in Kuching) but it does not excuse them from giving their basic courtesy of a smile when greeting your guest instead of the sour face and the off-handed manner of greeting their guest. Since I was tired after the long road trip I stopped myself from giving him some pointers in customer service mindset. Suffice to say my stay with this hotel did not go well. I decided to check out the next day and move into Pullman where at least I was valued as a guest.

Unless and until the management of this hotel decided to buckle-up on their customer service attitude & quality, I will give this hotel a missed on my trip to Kuching. There are at least 6-8 quality accommodation (luxury & budget) within 500m vicinity of this hotel to choose from so you are spoil for the picking. I for one will not pay good money for 4th grade customer service quality in a hotel.

Cheers

Can't ask for more for the price. My room was very nice. It faced the road but that was not a problem. Breakfast included had it all an the coffee was even good.
Room bathroom was very good which is not always the case in SE Asia.
Good location right on the river and has travel agent to help plan day trips.

We booked an executive twin-sharing room and make clear that it had to be a room on a non-smoking floor as one of us suffer from asthma. The result: we were put in an executive room on the 10th floor of the old wing. The room -- and indeed the wing that we were in -- looked a little worn, with decor of dark tainted wood from a previous era. But it was clean, spacious, and everything was functioning well including the wifi, and the aircon that was nicely cool enough without being noisy (as would be the case with older hotels in this part of the world). In short, we were quite happy with the arrangements. We had a river-facing room, giving us nice views of the sunset and the esplanade at night. The room came with club privileges -- including daily cocktail and finger food in the executive club/lounge in the new wing. There, we discovered another lot of executive rooms with more contemporary decor though not quite non-smoking. For those who aren't too fussy about non-smoking conditions, perhaps the newer wing would be a better choice. Breakfast was included in the rate, and was a buffet of local and international fare. The food was adequate though we didn't exactly bother with that as we preferred trying local street food. Front desk service was slow -- perhaps because some staff were inexperienced. But this shortfall in service was compensated by the friendly staff at the executive club who offered interesting nuggets of local life and attractions. Location-wise, the promenade is right at the hotel's doorstep, and the eatery street of Jln Padungan is a street away on the other side. Chinatown and the Indian town are within walking distances. The native villages are a short 50-sen boat ride away on the opposite side of the river, where a well-known kueh lapis shop seems to be a main attraction.

Room Tip: Ask for a river-facing room -- that's the selling point of this faded grand old dame. Insist on...

Great hotel, friendly staff, big room with amazing bed - one of the best I have ever slept in in a hotel. The bathroom is quite basic but adequate. Lovely view of the river. The breakfast is excellent.
The bar is good, and they seem to have offers on most days.
It's a good location. The only slight draw back is that pool is located next to the outside restaurant so there is a lack of privacy. In a location such as Kuching which is quite traditional you can feel extra conspicuous with dozens of diners just a few feet away.
