Kuching is Widely regarded as a great hub to spring out of and visit the big two attractions. The Bako national park island. And the orang-utans in Sarawak. (Both of Which we did)
But. Kuching has charm.
The waterfront is a laugh with a good scene in the evening for a wander.
There are fun bars too and a couple of great places to eat. (the Granary was ace)
So, where to stay?
The waterfront action is down by the Hilton. And with MAD levels of heat and humidity. The walk up the hill to the Pullman could temper its pull.
Their pool is big. One depth (shallow) and characterless. Not aided by the thrum of aircon units circling the space. You won’t want to stay in the cold jacuzzi for long. ITS SO LOUD right next to the pump room.
The gym is well stocked. Unlike the rooms that while big. Have an emptiness echoed by the vast lobby spaces.
It’s a big hotel. But lacks the attention to detail or flair that would make it great. It’s far more in the groove of a business hotel that loves to put on a conference than host tourists.
And the food offer is pretty dire. Orange squash. Not juice. Clearly reheated hash browns for breakfast. And £1 white bread sandwiches on offer for lunch. FAR better to venture out for things to eat.
It served a purpose. But wasn’t a highlight. A shame. As a few touches could elevate it away from vanilla bland business as usual.
While we didn’t stay at the Hilton. I can’t help feel it’s location alone would make it a better choice.
