The Pullman Hotel has all the making of a 5-star property. However, a few issues colored my review.
The hotel is about a year old. Built in a good area of Kuching, about a 5-min walk from the river. The hotel is situated above a mall, though there isn't much there to draw tourists.
Our room was large and well furnished. We had a room for a couch and a desk. The TV had standard hotel cable. The bathroom was almost as large as the bedroom, with a separate bathtub and shower. Our 19th floor room had an excellent view of the river/downtown area and we could see almost to the coast.
Our room rate included the standard int'l breakfast buffet, with the standard selection of Western and Asian breakfast dishes, egg station, etc.
With all these amenities, there is no reason why the hotel should not be 5-stars. However, there were a few things that could be improved.
First, there was no in-room wi-fi. Free wi-fi in the lobby isn't enough in the days of iPads and smart phones. The hotel should add wi-fi in the rooms, on par with other major hotels.
Second, the room could use some improvements. For example, the door between the bedroom and the closet/bathroom was stuck, making it very difficult to close the door properly. This is an easy carpentry fix that should have been fixed months earlier. In addition, there was no clock in the room. Third, there were power issues during our stay, including time where the TV and A/C did not work. There was a storm and it could have been related but power is a good thing to have.
The food at the buffet was good but service was a bit short. I had to wait almost 10 minutes for coffee both mornings that I stayed there. Other stations were empty so getting assistance took time. Everyone was friendly, but it seemed like the entire restaurant had tags saying "I'm new."
Would I stay there again? Probably. However, the hotel was not substantially better than others in the area (such as the Hilton), so they didn't capture my loyalty.
Not officially part of the hotel, the tour company, Cat City Tours, was excellent and I really recommend them.
