I’ve stayed at Basaga many times over the past 2 years when visiting Kuching from the rural area of Sarawak where I currently live and work. For me Basaga is home away from home. It is not far from Kuching waterfront, yet secluded, it provides excellent, homely, clean, value for money accommodation, a pool, friendly, helpful staff and very good Western and Asian food (popular with locals). I highly recommend it.

Basaga is a great place to stay, especially if you have access to a car. I stayed there for one night stopover before going to KK. The place is lovely, very welcoming and friendly staff, a really good atmosphere. The staff all seem happy to be there which makes a big difference. Thought has clearly gone into the decoration as everything looks good and fits into the surroundings. The room was comfortable and the food was tasty and reasonably priced. I would definately stay there again. The only drawback I can see is that it is a little way out of town. this was fine for me as I had already spent some time in Kuhing and had no need to go into the city. However, if you were staying for a week and knew you wanted to eat dinner in Kuching you'd need to factor in the taxi back to the hotel. That said I think it would be a small price to pay.

Basaga is also very relaxing with a nice pool area and plenty of room to relax around the bar and restaurant area. It seems to be a popular place for non-residents to come and eat too which is always a good sign.

Room Tip: There are quite a few options regarding rooms, it's best to ask staff.

Accommodation in the Courtyard was very clean and the outdoor shower made a change !! Actually, all very secure, not overlooked, and really did make a change to have a sower outside. Couldn't fault the management with regards to advice and assistance when we needed it. The restaurant was great, with a good selection of well cooked food, both European and local. Some problems occasionally with the timing of the arrival of the food e.g. One meal would arrive 20 mins or so before another,, which is not too good when you want to eat together. But atmosphere good, staff very friendly and accommodating if you want a lift into town.
Would recommend this hotel for anyone!

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are behind the ones fronting the pool, which makes then a little quieter .

Basaga has it all - quaint pool, leafy courtyard, basic but tastefully decorated rooms, good food and ultra helpful staff. ( I should know I mucked them about a bit)

I loved the back rooms with a tiny private courtyard and a shower outside. I felt miles from anywhere yet I was close to the heart of Kuching.

We stayed in Basaga at first three nights and a week later one more night with our family. We had a family room both time (different ones thou') which has connectiong poolside and courtyard rooms. Poolside comes with two single beds where as courtyard comes with a queen size. Both rooms have their own toilet and bathroom facilities, courtyard having a shower outside. Which we all loved and used :) Poolside has a minifridge and both rooms aircon AND a fan. Rooms were clean and in good condition. They are nicely and individually decorated. Absolutely a value for your money. Beds are very comfortable and sheets clean.

Service is excellent. First time they didn't have our booking which was made via hotels.com but as we could show it on our tabloit there was no problems checking in. All the staff was amazingly friendly and smiling all the time with Brandon the most welcoming and making sure your stay is all you want it to be.

Restaurant is also a good value. A small minus for the pasta but the rest was tasty and well cooked and cheap. Same goes with breakfast. And I loved my first (icecold) cider after missing it for all our so far 3 month travelling...

Pool is a bit small and there are sometimes quite many leaves which fall from the trees above. But they keep it as clean as possible by cleaning the pool daily when there are people using it. And our kids loved diving the leaves from the bottom. :) What we really missed on the pool was good sunchairs. There was only four, far from each others and a bit dated already.

Wi-Fi is free but has some problems in operating. Didn't work perfectly in the room and was jammed also in the lubby sometimes. Then again, this seems to be quite normal in Borneo.

Warmly recommended place!

Awesome hotel, really friendly staff who couldn't do enough for you. Was brilliant that the hotel could sort out everything from airport transfers to day trips and had a great restaurant to eat in... pretty much provided everything from under one roof. Will definitely use it again!

Room Tip: Ask for a pool side room (preferably on the ground floor if you have a big bag - though staff are al...

I have stayed in Kuching five times this year while exploring Borneo. I stayed at Basaga three times based on the trip advisor reviews and cost but have now switched my preference to the gateway hotel near the waterfront for the same price Basaga is just not located well within Kuching for any meaningful function: you have to depend on the infrequent shuttle or "taksi's" to get to the waterfront, there are no nearby stores to get supplies or munchies (20 mIn walk to nearest mall), no laundry except the hotels outrageously priced service, no restaurants other than Basaga (albeit it is good). We we're essentially trapped. If your only spending a day or two and can organize your schedule around the shuttle it would be a good choice. But if your planning to spend most of your time in the busier waterfront district, eat at Top Spot or other top restaurants, or get reorganized for your next excursion (like we did) then there are better located hotels with good service, higher standards, and lower cost.

Room Tip: make sure they put you in the newer addition across the courtyard. The old section is in need of re...
