My son and I decided to stay at Kura Kura after the excellent reviews and we were not disappointed. After experiencing Sabah, we were met at Kuching by Liza and taken to the markets for shopping. A short drive to her village and then into a boat for a magical river trip through canyons to their jungle home. I was so relaxed I kept falling asleep. The place has a certain charm and Liza and Lars are perfect hosts. They make you feel so welcome. Rooms are very comfortable. The house has large outside areas to lounge. Liza makes the most delicious meals. As the only guests at the time we felt a bit overwhelmed with the food - plate loads of superb dishes which we all shared together like close friends. Luke and I went with Lars caving and jungle walks. We did a day canoeing on the river, 11 Kim's, with some local lads. It was bliss. Washing clothes in the river and bathing in the river was wonderful. Cannot recommend more highly.

Liza and Lars and their daughter truly have a piece of paradise. Just go!

The KuraKura homestay is a fabulous place to spend a few days whilst visiting Kuching. Lars and Liza have built a beautiful home in the jungle, and provide their guests with a true homestay experience. The setting of the homestay is idyllic, and although there are so many activities available, it is also really pleasant just relaxing on the verandah looking out across their jungle garden with a cup of their freshly roasted ground coffee. Our room, the shared toliet and shower, as well as the whole homestay are immaculately clean. The bedrooms are simple but very comfortable, and Liza and her cousin Phyllis, do a wonderful job in the kitchen conjuring up a feast at every meal time. My wife and I really enjoyed the Jungle Shopping, which was enormous fun and very educational. Lars is a great guide and we also really enjoyed our day out with him visiting an un-touristy longhouse and a secluded waterfall. We only stayed 2 nights, but by the end of it we almost felt like we had known Lars and Liza for years, such is their hospitality. The KuraKura really is a unique experience for anybody who wants to see the real Borneo and spend some time in the company of a wonderful family.

Accessible only by small shallow hulled boats it's amazing what Lars and Liza have achieved, building their home in the jungle and creating a unique experience for guests.

While you need to be fairly able bodied to get there, I don't think you need to be fit to enjoy it. I went on a jungle trek with Lars which I enjoyed a lot, while my partner stayed at KuraKura and just chilled out, enjoyed the surroundings and swimming in the river.

I think it's really good value for money just for staying there and your meals. Add on some of the activities available and it's a real bargain.

Liza is a really good cook, all the food we ate was either locally sourced or grown on site. You'll get to try dishes and ingredients you'll have never seen before. Liza lays on a feast for breakfast, lunch and dinner! They even roast their own coffee which was really good.

My two main interests are photography and food, so I was a very happy.

We can only agree with all of the previous reviews. Lars and Liza have created a magical place to stay in the middle of the jungle. If you would like to experience the real Borneo, whilst having the privilege of staying with hosts who are not only knowledgeable and hospitable, but delightful people, then this is a must for you. We stayed for two nights, but very much wish that we had stayed longer. There is so much for you to do there, and Lars is happy to organise trips into the jungle/caves/on the river etc. We were taken by Liza into the jungle, who showed us many interesting plants and herbs, which were then made into the most delicious meal. Fresh bananas and pineapple picked from the garden were a mouthwatering 'snack'. We were fortunate to see fireflies, and one night woke to find one in our room - it was like watching Tinkerbell fluttering around the room - delightful. I could write far far more, but I think you should just go and experience the wonderful place that Lars and Liza have created for yourselves.

We planned our stay at Kurakura because of all the enthusiastic reviews from previous. What we know now is that all the previous guests were absolutely right! We stayed for 3 nights of our 3 week trip to Malaysia, enough time for Lars & Liza to share with us the unique experience of living life inside the Bornean jungle. In a very relaxed manner you can enjoy the sounds, the scents and all the other elements of this life. We went jungleshopping, on a jungletrek, to semanguh and a local longhouse. All were great! All meals we had here were about the best of what we had in our time in Malaysia (thank you Liza & Phyllis). The enthusiasm and knowledge of Lars was great on our jungletrek and other tours, both aspects we missed with other (professional unesco) guides. Great nature to trek by the way; see some of our pics ;) Big thank you to Lars! But most of all the atmosphere was great. They adapt easily to your mindset and know how to make the most of it for you. Definitely a highlight and if we ever come near Kuching again we will visit Lars & Liza !

I have heard about this homestay for years and I have to say it exceeded my expectations. Lars and Lisa were the perfect hosts--the food was amazing, the setting beautiful and my mother LOVED the 'rainforest grocerystore walk' that taught her a lot about the jungle vegetables and resulted in our dinner for the evening. Perfect escape from the heat and bustle of the city--make sure to book well in advance, I hear that they are getting quite popular. If you are prone to sand fly or mozzie bites--bring repellent. Thanks again to this fantastic family for such a unique experience so close to Kuching!

Brilliant.

Just back from a two day trip staying at Kurakura Homestay, a guesthouse in the upper Sarawak river - a tranquil jungle paradise surrounded by Borneo rainforest. This is a longhouse built by themselves four years ago. Lars (Norwegian), Liza (from Bidayuh tribe), their 3 year old daughter Froya (who we named "Macaque" during my visit), two wonderful cats and three chickens surrounded by wildlife and wilderness. An absolutely wonderful trip. The family, together with Liza's cousin, Phyllis, made me feel so welcome and allowed me to experience a perfect place to stay with culture, local life and food.

If you ever have chance to stay in this area this trip is a must. Although, selfishly I would like to keep it a secret. A 5 star trip advisor report truly deserved.

The jungle guesthouse takes approx. 45 minutes by car from Kuching city centre to a nearby village, stopping off at a local market for produce and a KOPI for the road. Following this the journey continues along the river in a small boat for twenty minutes with breathtaking scenery and kingfishers along the way.

After meeting the family, several iced lemon teas and a light lunch, it was jungle shopping, searching for foodstuffs as locals once used to. With found a whole array of goodies to eat for supper.

The guesthouse is so clean and the family are so welcoming, treating you as one of their own.

You can also arrange trips from here such as kayaking, jungle treks, trip to see orangutans and more.

This place is paradise.

Wonderful house, wonderful family and wonderful setting.

Thank you
