Tune Hotel Waterfront Kuching, Sarawak
Ranked #20 of 55 Hotels in Kuching
Reviewed September 6, 2009

Location:
- Great Location.
- Located opposite the Hilton Kuching, and across from the Waterfont.
- Good food (Topspot Openair Seafood, Choon Choon Cafe), shopping (Parkson, Sarawak Plaza) within 5 mins walking distance.
- Music Lounge located same building.

Room:
- Given a single room on the 1st floor with Window and a side view of the River.
- Small room but enough to fit in a bedside table, hangers and a small wall desk.
- Relatively clean : floor was a bit dusty and bedsheet/blanket had some stains.
- Room equip with Electronic Safe, Strong Fan and A/C (charged separately).
- Toilet was clean with Strong Hot Shower.

- This may only effect locations around Room 101-103: Unfortunatey, music from the Bar was heard (between 10pm - 1pm). The Hotel's spot-light also shone through the top of the Curtain. So ear-plugs and ear-shades may be needed if you are a light sleeper.

Misc:
- There is a shuttle between the Airport and Hotel (vice-versa) at a Promotional rate of MYR$7.99.
- Complementary (20 mins) Internet Sufting from the PC located in the lobby.
- Small cafe and travel agency also in the lobby.

Tip:
- Right across the main road from the Hotel, there is a Jetty landing. Take the Sampan (40 cents, one way) across to the Kampong opposite. Upon landing, turn right, walk 5 mins and look for 40 Kampong Garsik (it is a house) You will find the factory that sells beautifully decorated (coloured) Lapis Cake going for MYR10 a box!
- Of course you can find these sold at the Main Bazaar. But you dont get the adventure.

Hey, as has been said before .. you get what you pay for and you can't complain at that price.
Rooms are small but clean, the corridors smell heavily of disinfectant, the sheets were clean, the shower good, the location excellent .. but DON'T FORGET THE EARPLUGS!!

there are notices around asking guests to be considerate and stop children from shouting and running up and down corridors but most people obviously cannot read!

Apart from that .. it was ..OK.

I had to overnight in Kuching and booked this hotel. Great location in the heart of the town, just in front of the hilton. Rooms are quite basic, toilet not really perfect.
In any case a great deal for the price paid!

I stayed here for 1 night as my flight was delayed overnight and I booked Tune Hotels as I would be staying in Hilton during my stay in Kuching, and moving across to Tune Hotels was most convenient. I was aware of the small rooms, no TV, no air con, no toiletries etc. I also read that the Hilton facing rooms came with windows, and so i went down to Tune hotels the night before to request for my 2 rooms to be Hilton facing but was told they can't check their system for available rooms until the rooms are checked out. So i went down again (i was still in hilton across the road anyway) to request for my rooms to face Hilton at 9 and 11 AM but was rejected again because the system still doesn't show the available rooms and they told me to check later. (that explains the few times going down to check!)

When i checked in at 2pm i specifically asked again for Hilton facing, and the lady said yes ok and enjoy my stay. When i opened the door, there wasn't any windows! I went back and asked them for my rooms with windows but they said none left. Why did that lady say my rooms are with windows in the first place? I know this is a budget hotel and all, but previous reviews by others were able to get Hilton facing rooms upon check in, this time i went down 3 times specifically to request (with smiles too!) but I didnt!

Geez. Really disappointed as the room was rather suffocating and felt like we were staying in prison cells without the windows. Also, rooms without windows are dangerous if there's a fire since there isn't any window to jump out considering that there's only 1 lift and stairs. I can't deny the fact that the rooms are cheap and in a good location but rooms without windows are something quite hard to accept for me.

First of all, I walked-in for the rooms..I did not do any booking, so I sort of in luck that day..

The front-desk service was friendly. Warm smiles accompany the whole process. The rooms were explained clearly, including the rates and charges for additional service.

The room, considering it is a new Tune hotel branch, was very clean and equip with the standard Tune Hotel design. If you have been to Tune Hotel before, then you'll know what to expect. The design is modern, with sleek white interior *wall, bed sheet, pillow* and woodsie brown *cabinet, flooring*. The toilet and shower were clean and really nice.

But bear in mind that you pay for what you use. You'll have to pay to upgrade to air condition (ceiling fan will be given for standard price), kettle, iron, tv, towels and toiletries. There were no phone provided but you can use the ones provided at the public area (lift).

The location was not that far from main attraction (main bazaar, Waterfront area). If you want to visit Cultural Village, Orang Utans Park, Bako National Park or Santubong Mountain, you still have to travel more than 30minutes from the city. it is best to travel by local cab or tour company (depends on your methods of traveling). A tour agency was also available at the lobby of the hotel. It is best for you to compare the price first ( I consider it a bit too expensive)

The rooms were not really sound proof. I end up sleeping late because the neighbors next door keep making noise. They were just checked-in so they were really excited about the rooms. Played with the door, kids running and screaming. So it really can get on your nerves. That is the only thing I hate about this hotel and I think they have received a lot of complaints regarding it because the whole Tune Hotels branch provide thin walls.

Overall, I think the hotel offers one of the best solution to those who want to just crash in for the night and leave early in the morning (standard room w/o additional service) and still save some money. It was just what I need during my travel.

I stayed for 4 weeks while on attachment at the hospital.

Great location right opposite the Hilton - Waterfront is just across the road, 24 hr restaurant just opposite & shopping malls next door (all 3 had huge sales while I was there even though I never usually shop in malls on holidays!). Also good if you're there in March for the temple parade - it goes right up the road so you see everything up close! Round the back are eating places locals can be found at, cheaper shops, a salon (didn't try it) and a few mins walk away is a road full of Chinese restaurants leading to the Great Cat of Kuching statue (and HSBC bank with cash point!). Amenities in the hotel are 2 free computers connected to internet and travel agent desk inside. Parking is on the street so check charges, though there's a car park round back that's free overnight (not the hotel's).

Some tips on choosing a room - ask for a Hilton facing room (these are a bit bigger and have windows), ask for 2nd or 3rd floor (won't have noise from the Cat City nightclub). They're usually really accomodating - just be nice and you'll reap what you sow! I checked in and out several times and made sure I always got a front room - comfy bed, safe (check there is one and if not ask for one), 2 bedside tables, clothes hanger (ok, only 3 hangers but better than nothing) and small bathroom with rainshower.

Service was a bit slow since you had to sort add-ons but there's sofas so you can take a seat and staff are helpful if you're polite. I had several problems as I stayed just as it was opening & they had teething problems i.e. smell in bathroom, room too small compared to colleague, no hot water - but I just went right back down to reception, told them what the problem was and if they could do anything, and I was moved room immediately with help. They tend to clean floors in rooms everyday but don't necessarily change the sheets - again, just ask at reception if you want it or want the cleaning done again. One night, the receptionist even did it for me since the cleaning staff had gone home!!

Overall, I'd recommend it. Firstly, it gives you the basics - bed and bathroom (remember to take towels or hire one there) in a great location. Second, there are several benefits than close hostels - it's cheaper than many of them, doesn't limit you (i.e. no shoes inside, no food inside) and although it doesn't include breakfast you save more than enough to cover it (we went to the supermarket and got cereal & fruit so we could eat in) and is cleaner from what I experienced (also stayed at one of the hostels for a couple of nights before moving).

The best thing are the staff who are really friendly. I thought they'd be fed up with all the things I kept asking for and things I needed changing, but they sorted out my problems, still always smiled and had a good chat.

Hotel was easily accessible by transfer services (MYR 8 pp) available at airport. Check in was rather slow, as the counter was quite understaffed (and also plus the fact every guest was making special requests about what add-ons to purchase). Our room was small and was located on the first floor, but at least it had a window and a view of the Hilton and a little bit of the Sarawak River. Some rooms in the center of the building have no windows whatsoever, while ones on the other side have views not much to speak of (the shoplets they look onto though are a great find, including the Great Onion restaurant offering good and cheap (US$1.50) food). Rooms are apparently cleaned every day, although the staff really just cleared your rubbish, and remade your bed. The floor was not swept again for us - but it's fine. .

Our room had a small fold table, a fan, as well as a high-tech safe. Everything was in good working order, albeit a little minimalistic. It sufficed though. Bathroom had a glass door with a huge decal plastered over a good 70% of it... in effect you could see the feet of the person(s) inside at all times. The door also does not have a lock, nor a catch - it just closes and rests on a piece of rubber - which makes privacy a little wanting in the event you are traveling with a companion you don't know very well (e.g. a classmate etc).

Being close to the Hilton, guests could take advantage of good restaurant deals just a stone's throw away. We went to the steakhouse and had a wonderful time there (although it made us wonder if we should have stayed in Hilton at a premium). But I digress.

All in all, Tune was a good bargain for us. Paying less than 60 MYR a night per room, in a hotel right in the heart of the city among the grand hotels (Hilton, Riverside Majestic and Grand Magharita), it was more than a steal.
