Spent one night at Lavender Lodge and was disappointed given the reviews it had received. It was very worn and a bit down at the heel, in need of sprucing up and some new furniture. The rooms were small and cramped, although on the positive side there was a computer for public use and some common space.

Only downside was shared bathrooms but they were clean.
Room comfy and cleaned every day. Communal area with tv.
Aircon great in room.
Owner and reception staff REALLY helpful and so nice.
Breakfast included, tea/coffee, bananas and toast, always asked if we wanted more.
Checked a few other places out as returning to Kk in 3 weeks and decided to return to lavender lodge mostly due to the friendliness of staff but also spaciousness of room.
For a budget place I think this is the first place I've rated all '5's'

Fantastic location - close to pretty much anything you would want to do, as well as a heap of food places (especially if you like seafood with the markets over the road). The staff were especially friendly and happy to provide any info you need. Breakfast was very basic (toast and fruit with coffee) but amazing bakeries nearby.

I was a little worried about communal bathrooms having had a few bad experiences, however they were spotless and both the toilets and the showers have ample room in them so you get privacy without being cramped.

The wifi wasn't very good, but the netcafe we visited down the road was incredibly slow too, so I think it was out of their control.

Would happily staff again. Just watch out for the prostitutes that frequent the streets around it late at night.

Room Tip: No elevator, so if stairs scare you, ask for a room on the lower floors.

Im very dissapointed with the night shift staff as i was told about their high rate of friendliness, in fact they are friendly to foriegners only. There is no WiFi service in the room. Furthermore, i am having difficulty to search info from evening till midnight as there is only one computer on the ground floor.

Thank you for staying with us during your recent visit to sabah. I am afraid we have to disagree with your remark because it is absolutely untrue . we do not compromise on our duty towards our guests and we welcome all our guests with great courtesy, respect and friendliness irrespective of where they come from. The many excellent reviews we received from our foreign guests as well as Malaysian guests are the best testimony to our excellent service. On the subject of computer which i suspect is the real reason for your complain. we provide 1 computer in the reception area and 2 more computers in the computer room for the benefit of our guests. In addition, we also provide 2 different wireless network connections with security passwords for the convenient of our guests. All these services are provided absolutely free of charge. You were unhappy that you were not able to go online because the computers were all occupied by our foreign guests . I believe if you had made it known to the staff or even directly with the foreign guests that you were waiting to use the computer instead of keeping silence , then such problem would have been avoided, remaining quiet only made you angry and frustrated. This is a lesson to be learn and we have also instructed our stuff to be more alert to waiting queue for the computer from now on.

Cozy little lodge with great location situated center of city Kota Kinabalu. Been stayed there for 4D3N. It is managed by a nice friendly elder couple. They will not hesitate to share you every information they have whenever you need helps.
A very clean and tidy place to stay. Different kinds and sizes of rooms are available for ranges of guests, families, or backpackers, in very affordable rates. They were rated as "Top rated hostel" for what I've known, which I am very agreed with.
Only a very small issue is the car park issue. It is usually full most the time. But if you wait just for awhile more, you will get one. No worries for that after all.
Definitely I will be back to visit!

This is a great little hostel bang in the centre of Kota Kinabalu. Only 5 mins walk from the bus station and the night market. Spotlessly clean (the staff always seemed to be cleaning something!), very polite staff who were really helpful in letting us book accommodation and organise our Mount Kinabalu climb using the phone in reception.
