3-Day Adventure in Tabin Wildlife Reserve
Reviewed June 25, 2012

We stayed at the Tabin Wildlife reserve for two nights and had a wonderful experience. As well as good food and excellent guides we saw Long Tailed and Pig Tailed Macaque, Gibbon, Water Monitor Lizards, Sun Bear, Porcupine, Civet, Giant Squirrel and Mouse Deer. We saw many birds such as Serpent Eagle, Coucal, various Kingfishers and Hornbills including Rhinoceros, white crested and black Asian. The most amazing thing that we saw was the flying squirrel who flew some 200 yards! and the many fire flies. The 2 hour off road ride from Lahad Datu airport was extremely bumpy and certainly kept us awake, but it added to our experience and really made us feel that we were going deep in the forest. Our Chalet was very clean, basic but it had a hot water shower and air conditioning as well as the resident Gecko! There were many leeches but with our leech socks and by tucking our shirts into our trousers we managed to avoid them. We feel that this is a great value for money reserve with really friendly staff. We would especially like to thank Palin our guide who looked after us really well.

I like the nature and you can see lots of wild animals and listen to birds singing in the early morning.
I disliked the place as while you drive in to Tabin, there is no proper road.

We wanted a genuine stay where nothing we be canned and we saw what came out not what was caged/fed up to us - and this was exactly that. The staff were very organised, friendly and helpful and the accommodation and food were both good, in fact amazing for being in the middle of the rainforest. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at Tabin.

It was a very interesting area to see communities surviving around palm oil plantation. The rainforest canopy and floor were present but the middle layer was decimated by over crowding of animals into what is left of the forest. The signature animals of the forest were there and in this part of the world they are interesting species. The individual animals particularly the elephants didn't seem to be in the healthiest condition. Still it was great to see four different types of monkeys, five different types of tropical bird and pgmy elephants in the wild.

Our chalet was about 50 feet above the river with air con (in the jungle!!). To sit on the balcony with a G&T in one hand and binoculars in the other looking at the wildlife like hornbills and kingfishers - Can life get any better?
To reach the resort is a rocky ride from Lahad Datu which takes about 90 minutes. You will lose fillings if you aren't careful! The road runs between the palm oil plantations to the left and the jungle on the right. Keep your eyes peeled because there is much wildlife and birds to be seen and you have not even arrived.
Like other jungle lodges we stayed in (see notes for Danum and Abai) I assume that you are coming for the wildlife. Again the role of guide and driver is crucial to what you will see. The guides at this resort led by Esrael were the best we encountered. They are all very experienced and about 4 or 5 have been headhunted from Danum. (I couldn't resist the head hunting bit). Because the jungle is "secondary" forest, the animals are more easily seen. I can't remember how many species we saw in a couple of hours walk around the lodge - simply loads. One of the main highlights for me were the flying squirrels - one red and one black. Spectacular video op if you have a camera with low light capabilities because they "fly" at dusk. Unlike Danum the afternoon/evening drive is fantastic. Something special is almost guaranteed.
Food and drink are fairly basic but good . The chalets are more than basic but not fantastic. We spent 2 nights here before moving on to Danum.
If you have to choose only one jungle lodge then this would be the best of the 3 we stayed in. it is truly ideal for anyone who wants to see jungle and animals in relaxed surroundings.
