“no frills .. worst WiFi ever”
Reviewed July 9, 2010

I stayed here for 3 days. During that time this hotel just newly renovated. For me this hotel is quite affordable for single traveller, I got a room for RM70+ / night. The room is very small. Television signal is not that clear.
Not too much complaint except the WiFi service was so bad. I need to get the password from the counter many times.
Its been a year now I guess will be a lot of improvement then.

We came to KK for a holiday trip with our parents. All of us (4 pax) had the rooms on the 8th floor. One of the rooms has a sea view which is great. We noted Winner Hotel is one of the tallest budget hotels along Jalan Pantai.
Location is good as it is right in the heart of KK city centre. Lots of coffee shops (eating places) around the hotel. There's a 24-hr KFC (fast food joint) right at the corner. Lots of 24-hr convenient stores around as well..
The hotel has gone through a recent refurbishing. Rooms are decent and clean (our rooms have no mouldy wall), Towels are changed daily. Hot shower available. Air conditioner unit is working well.

We find the place comfortable and we had good night sleep. We wanted a place to come back and rest after all the sight seeing in the day time. The hotel serves us well for the amount we paid - value for money.

The staff at the reception is friendly and helpful. We got them to arrange for car rental for us as well. And the wonderful thing - the entire hotel is hooked up with Wifi broadband (free internet surfing).

This hotel is in rather poor state and poorly managed. The staff do their best in this situation. I had to change rooms many times because of one problem or another. Some rooms had very weak air-conditioners, making it very hot, even when air-con turned on full blast. One room had a wall that was moldy. A lamp not working in another room and was told it cannot be repaired. The carpet was so dusty that I had to wear slippers in the room. Requests from the reception took ages. There was construction of a lift going on till late at night, with banging noises. On the plus side, rooms were quite tastefuly furnished and had free wifi.

My girlfriend and I decided to stay at a Standard Twin Bedroom. The room is a newly renovated with a modern-hotel design and most importantly, clean. It is almost like spending a few nights in a 3 star hotel at a RM120range. The hotel provide hair dryer , shower hot/cold, towels, 5-star bed (eventhough the bed is a bit stiff), LCD TV, kettle, complimentary tea/coffee packs and breakfast, bathroom set (shampoo & shower gel) and others. Additionally, the hotel provide complimentary WIFI. During my stay, the Wi-Fi offline for a day and the speed is a satisfied slow as at least, I was still able to check my email, flight itinerary and search for best food in Kota Kinabalu. However, the room is really small for Standard type. But for 2-3person staying in the room, it is alright.

Location, it is superb. It is in the middle of the city. Walking to the nearest Shopping Centre, The CentrePoint (5mins), Warisan Square (<10mins) - Cathay Cinema (5mins), 24Hours KFC (<3mins), Waterfront (10mins), Ferry Terminal (20-30mins), KK CBD (Banks area 15-20mins). For 1Borneo, you can either take a taxi (RM25 per trip) or Shuttle Bus (Shuttle Bus Stop at Warisan Square).

Hotel Service, I would rate 4 out of 5. At this price range, I am generally satisfied with the pleasant customer service staff (bellboy, receptionist) but I feel they could do more than that. During our stay (4Days3Nights), the lift was down and been told the lift will be operational on our 2nd day but it is not. Unfortunately, it is yet operational even after we checked-out. Since our room was at Level 6 (I think, the highest is Level 7), we need to walk out the stairs whenever we went out and return from our trip. Kinda tiring. During check-in, the bellboy was more than happy to carry out our 2-heavy luggage (15KG Each) and the bellboy insisted not to accept our tips. However, it is a bit different during our check-out. We need to specifically request for luggage assistance since the lift is still offline. Anyway, the receptionist informed us during our check-in that there would be RM20 discount for lift problem.

Generally, one of the best hotel in downtown Kota Kinabalu.

I stayed here for 1 night only after coming back from Sandakan by bus in the late evening---too tired to find a proper place to stay the night.

This has got to be the worst hotel in this category---smelly building, musty room, cold showers and so decrepit that it is almost too embarassing to describe. Next to a KFC joint, this place looked as if it has never undergone a minor facelift in 30-40 years! The room furniture looked late '50-ish, so are the bathroom fittings. The water dripped non-stop from the upper floors and the pigeons on the ledge kept me up all night .And for Rm85 a night, it was very poor value indeed!

The only saving grace was the air-con unit which was new and functioning. I did the only sensible thing the next morning---checked out and run.
