“Great room with a view of Kinabalu!”
Reviewed November 29, 2011

We stayed here awaiting our start to trek up the mountain and were impressed by the overall room and facilities. Reasonable cost and basic but tasty food available. We also got the local bus to the town/park entrance for RM1 and had even better food in view of the mountain.

Overall, great for the cost and view that you get!

We were not climbing the mountain, but we wanted a good view and this place delivered on the view (little balconies out the back of each room guarantee you can at least see the clouds, if not the mountain itself).

It's fairly old fashioned but clean and functioning. Nice touch of having hot and cold water available.

2km from Park HQ along the main road, we never had any problems hitching between the 2. Probably better to book your onward travel though if you want to be sure as the staff aren't overly helpful about getting it.

Had no problems with infriendly or unhelpful staff at all.

Standard was probably on a par with other places, but the view is fabulous.

This was a good clean place to stay on the night before our Mount Kinabalu climb. It had a PC but no wifi. Room was old, but spacious with a TV, and a good balcony with views to the mountain. The owner will charge a small fare to drop you off in the moring to the mountain, but he didn´t charge us as he was going that way. Honesty.

Sutera, the company who manage your 1 night stay on the mountain, try to rip customers off by getting them to stay in their base lodge, metioning customers have to stay 2 nights with them. Nonsense. We spent only 1 night with them at their lodge.

Room Tip: Ensure you ask for a clean room, further away from reception to ensure quietness.

The location is good where the room facing mountains gives you a breathtaking scenery looking over to Mount Kinabalu. However, the attitude of the lady at the counter is really bad. The water heater in my room is not working. A cold shower in a rainy day could be a bad experience. I will not recommend this hotel for a stay

It was quiet. It was comfortable. The food was good. Any of these things going horribly wrong would not have change my positive opinion because I loved the view. It was a weekday night so we were one of only two rooms booked, so the result was a peace on the balcony that I have rarely found in South East Asia.

I would get bored for longer, but for that moment, it was great.

This should be listed in Ranau or Kundasung though, not Kota Kinabalu.

Not the same management apparently as when we stayed there last year during our climb up mount kinabalu.

1) Lady behind the counter needs a crash course in customer relations and to stop changing prices on travellers. On the phone, we were quoted one date. When we arrived, we were quoted RM35 more per person. We ended up having a 45 minute argument that didn't go anywhere because she refused to back down, knowing it was a long weekend holiday (labour day weekend holiday) and she could sell the rooms if we didn't want them.

2) Wanted to charge RM10 per person to store our bags whilst we climbed mount kinabalu which was I think silly. We ended up moving all our bags to kinabalu park headquarters and storing it there instead.

3) Rooms are run down and haven't been maintained. Needs some paint work and the beds need to be replaced. Everytime you turn, the entire bed creaks and you can hear it from one end of the hall to the other. Toilets need better cleaning techniques and more care.

4) Food: Noticed food prices have also shot up compared to last year. Tasty food fare but the prices by local motel standards is very pricey.

Wouldn't stay here again given there are many other options available now in the area. New management needs to attend some tourism courses and to stop trying to rip travellers off. Motels like these give Sabah a bad reputation.

We wanted to stay outside the park for cost reasons in the night before starting the Mount Kinabalu climb and we liked it there.
The views of the mountain was fabulous from the balcony and the bed was nice and comfy. However, you cant be fussy if you sleep there as we had a cockroach in the bathroom and the bathroom as such was quite dated.
We were happy to have stayed there and breakfast and dinner next door was fine too!!!
