“Good base to explore the city”
Reviewed April 28, 2009

We stayed at this hotel for 8 nights on a room only basis.

We were lucky to get a sea view room on the 10th Floor (total of 12floors), which was Great as the sunset is superb and the views in General are worth the extra outlay.

The room itself was very spacious, comfortable Bed, Flatscreen TV etc etc.

Locatiin wise the Hotel iswell placed for thhe nearby shopping centre (which has a great food court in the basement for extremely cheap and great tasting food) and the Night Market which is great if you're into Seafood.

KK itself is not a very big city but unfortunately the Ferry Terminal is at the other end of town if you want to catch a boat to the Islands (Great Snorkelling). Plenty of taxis around if you'd prefer not to walk in the heat.

Nice swimming pool facing the sea with a small gym attached.

Overall Le Meridien is good base to explore the city and it has all the amenties you'd expect of the chain. There are probably better value options available in the city if you were on a budge, but we booked ahead paying upfront and were happy with the cost (around £60 per night, no breakfast).

The town made us feel like singapore in the 70's, no frills, no fuss and no rush. There's not a lot to do if you dont intend to go to the surrounding islands. That's why the large room with great views, tasty satay at the WaterFront plus great kopi/nasilemak made our stay a simple and comfortable one, a little getaway from the modern hustle and bustle back home.

We enjoyed our stay and I will definitely recommend the hotel. Having said that, I wouldnt however recommend this town for honeymooners unless they are using this town as a base for other travels.

ROOM
Fellow reviewers were spot on when they commented about the size of the rooms. Our deluxe seafacing room on the 9th floor was about 1 & half times larger than many 4 or even 5* hotels..

Toiletries were generously topped up. Bathroom and shower was pretty spacious.
The 2 queen size beds were very comfortable. Best was the large windows for viewing the sunset, sea and boats. 2 free bottles of drinking water are provided each day. Don’t drink the tap water.

We were on a simple getaway for 5 days, wanting to enjoy simple malaysian food and relax. The nice room made our stay a very comfortable one. Service was good on the whole and we find the Sabahans very friendly wherever we went.

Strangely we didnt get any of the fishy smell others were talking about from the fish market- not sure if it's because we only went out for breakfast at 10.30am.

Although the hotel itself is pretty quiet and you dont get much external noise, one negative thing we did notice was what other reviewers mentioned - thin walls. We could hear the Tv from the next room one night. That made us mindful about keeping our noise level down. Thankfully we had a fairly quiet stay as there werent any rowdy neighbours or screaming kids running around. We only heard guests when they were returning to their rooms.

The pool looked nice although the area is too small for more loungers. Had a peek into the ladies changing room but found the jacuzzi area was a little stark and humid.

TAXI FROM AIRPORT
Exit the arrival hall, turn left and you will see a row of counters. Look for the official taxi booth - there's a sign. Tell them LeMeridien and they will charge you a flat rate. After payment (I think it was Ringgit 20) they will hand you a coupon .Walk out to the taxi stand, hand the coupon to the attendant who will get a taxi for you. It took 10 - 15mins to arrive at the hotel.

From the hotel back to the airport, it was also hassle free. The hotel staff called for a taxi and it cost a flat rate of 20 ringgit as well. The airport is modern but there isnt alot to see in there. There are very limited shops or eateries. However, waiting areas are quite comfortable.

FOOD
I suggest you get a map from the reception as it’s much easier to find your way around.
We ate twice at the hotel's coffee house. Service was very friendly and it was relaxing dining there. We only had their breakfast on the morning of departure to the airport. If you buy the breakfast coupon from the reception, there's a discount compared to just paying directly at the coffee house. Breakfast was the the usual buffet spread.

OLDE STATION CAFÉ AT WARISAN MALL
On the other mornings, we frequented the Old Station Café. We found this simple malaysian style modern cafe with super duper aromatic local coffee and tea. It's inside the Warisan Mall (this mall has 3 lots, the modern Kopitiam is located where Esprit is. See my photo if you are interested). We enjoyed the nasi lemak here (opens at 9am I think), a tasty and cheaper alternative to the hotel's breakfast. They also have other local food like penang laksa, noodles etc . The kopitiam's local coffee is really good and aromatic. There’s some kuay around 11am. The aircon in the cafe was fine in the morning till late afternoon. It did get a little stuffy in the evening though - perhaps saving on power?

The other sections of the Warisan mall houses other eateries like Fish and Co. HK style noodles etc There's a small Times Bookshop for guys to browse around if their partners want to walk around.

WATERFRONT
The Waterfront Esplanade has a good view of the sunset. Just be aware that the breeze isn’t the kind of pure fresh wind you get at Maldives. It’s more of a fisherman’s kelong sea air instead. The tables are set up and it's quite a relaxing place to get a bite. We found the one and only satay stall a few doors away from the Northern Indian restaurant. Most of the restaurants by the Waterfront have western menus so we were really happy to find this local satay stall (meat on skewers...) It's been a long time since we ate in these surroundings - together with a cool one and mango juice to down the beef and chicken satay (skip the mutton..) it was a relaxing time to spend the evening.

NIGHT STALLS OPPOSITE THE HOTEL
These are set up opposite the hotel at the wharf. Quite amazing how the wharf comes alive at 6pm suddenly with all these stalls. They sell vegetables, fruits, local food and BBQ seafood. We were too chicken to eat the BBQ because of hygiene standards - I doubt if our stomachs are as hardy as the locals. Wondering how clean the utensils are somehow kept us from being adventurous. Nevertheless, it was interesting to walk through the place just for the markets and night atmosphere (suggest you leave your expensive footwear at home). We bought some pomelo and mangosteens though.

SEAFOOD "VILLAGE" STALLS
This place is where you get to pick the stuff from the tanks before they weigh it) - the seafood "village" is about 15mins stroll from the hotel.. It's not at the waterfront or nightstalls (ask the reception for a map inorder to locate this area at night). You have to walk behind the hotel. This place has about 6-8 seafood outlets - the stall had a minimum of 300gms for type of seafood. We ended up with only prawns and a plate of noodles + vegs. There was no way we could eat 5 squids or a large fish between us because of the weight. They should come up with a seafood platter for 2...

INTERNET
Forget about using the hotel's computer. It's expensive and they admitted the connection can be slow. Head for the Internet Cafe near the PUBLIC BANK building which charges 1ringgit for half an hour. That's really cheap! From the hotel's lobby exit, turn left and left down the driveway ramp. Look for the the PUBLIC BANK building (see my photo) after the traffic lights near the police post. There's an orange sign that say Internet Cafe.

I have been in to Kota Kinabalu (also known as KK) with our team for Road show. This was very nice and elegant hotel.

Having almost all the facilities you can imagine, Spa, Golf, Beach, Swimming Pool, no. of restaurants, conference halls, etc..

Rates are not quite high as either we got corporate rate or it was not a pick season, I paid about 450 Ringgit per night.

They provide airport pick and drop, rooms are quite comfortable and cozy, well equipped including mini bar, complimentary fruits, etc..

Overall senic location and nice place to relax as well for family / honeymooners also.

We got a really good discounted price from Stawood best rate guarantee stating the favourable price at asia web direct. A club room with access to the club lounge on the top floor. That was really nice. The breakfast selection isn't that big up there, but it's nice and quiet and you have a great view. The free cocktails between 5 and 7 pm is also a nice way to see the view and the sunset if the sky is clear. But why they only have 10 sun beds by the pool I cannot understand. The service was excellent too, and the hotel has a great location in the middle of the city close to the boardwalk and night market. I would stay here again.

Deluxe room was huge with bath and walk-in shower. 2 queen-size beds, flat-screen TV, ironing board, fridge, complimentary water & toiletries.
Breakfast buffet has a large choice of multi-national cuisine. Didn't eat any other meals in the restaurant as there are many better-value ones in the immediate vicinity, had Italian, Chinese, Indian and Japanese on consecutive nights.
Fascinating Filipino food market opposite the hotel, never seen so much choice of fish.

I booked directly at hotel's website & got a stay 2 nights free 1 night deal. Am surprise to see that our deluxe room was so huge. The room is non smoking, very clean & spacious with 2 confortable queen size bed. The bath room is equally huge & the house keeping is very generous with the replenishment of the toileitries.
The only dissapointment was the dinner buffet. The choice is limited & the food quality is not up to 5 star hotel standard.

A well placed hotel with great views from higher floors over the ocean. Breakfast is very large and the staff are all friendly and helpful. Easy to get Taxi's all over the city. Pool is small but pleasant, and drinks and meals reasonably priced for a 'western' hotel vs local restaurants and bars. Be sure to try the Indian restaurant on the waterfront - very nice!
