Booked the nexus spa and resort way back as it was advertised as a 5star resort. Complete opposite. Albeit the beach is located some 40minutes from the Center of Kota Kinabalu the beach was my highlight of this 3 night stay.

Rooms were poorly managed, no amenities we had to teach the housekeeping staff what shower gels were and they kept on brining me soap.

Internet connectivity across the resort is non existent. Staff had no idea and made up stories suggesting to me that the weather affected the in room LAN connection.

As a seasoned traveller I have stayed in most rated hotels but this resort is not 5 star I would if I am generous give them a 3 star rating.

Stayed in the 2 bedroom pool villa with girlfriends for a night. All the horror stories told on Tripadvisor is true. The villa is in dire need of some TLC, appears to be totally neglected and left to die.

Asked for a late check out but was only allowed up to 1pm stating that it was booked out for another guest. Hello? There was nobody in the pool behind the villas on the two days that we were there. Completely secluded. The high tide starts very early (4pm-ish) so if you intend on getting some beach action next to the villas, go early. Nobody at the pool bar and it is obvious that it hasn't been used for a long time - extremely dirty.

No turn down service for a supposedly 5 star, RM1K a night villa? Come on.

The good part : Staff (who I assume must be having a hard time with all the complaints that it hardly their fault) were pleasant and doing their best to make up for the poorly managed resort with their excellent service. We had the pool to ourselves on both days. (We used the one behind the villas and furthest from the main resort building).
Thankfully, there was no lizard (gecko) crap or cockroaches in the "villa" as reported by other reviewers.

The lousy part : The poor reviews are all true. :-( I would pay a little more and upgrade over to Shangri-La.

A girls' trip in Sept @ a pool villa.

Location:
40 mins away from airport at a large resort compound. Pool villas are at the separate section and check-ins at a separate reception.

Hotel:
Sad looking w/ unkept landscape and scruffy furniture. The building could also use fresh paint.

Our 2-bedroom pool villa was decent enough but was far from being a 'villa'. The 'pool' was a wading pool at most. The lounge chairs have seen better days, the kitchen cannot be used, no wi-fi, the broken guest toilet and the list goes ....

No deck chairs available on beach and pool bar is dirty and without service crew. Don't even get me started on uncut grass/weed, and garbage on the beach (diaper, bottles..).

Service:
Dining at the hotel is the only option with pricey return cab fare (rm140) to town. Mediocre fare offered at their 6 restaurants/cafes at the main wing.

Positives: Wait staff were cordial and pleasant. Also Quick action when extra towels were requested and patience with our room service orders/complaints.

Overall:
Decent beach but DEFINITELY not worth the $1,000+ a night price tag.

I stayed here for 2 nights with my family. When we drove up to the lobby area, we were very impressed by the driveway and when we arrived in the lobby the lookout to the sea was stunning. The room was furnished in an early to mid 90s style greeted by Eucalyptus scent. Here are some Pros and Cons of our visit:

Pros:
- Friendly staff. Greeted every time you pass them.
- Borneo spa was absolutely wonderful. One of the most relaxing spas I have been to. A must for anyone who visits this resort. Make time to go get a treatment from this spa.
- Entire resort was very relaxing. Not too busy or noisy.
- Beach is very private and definitely stunning.
- Amazing wildlife roaming the resort freely. (Monitor Lizards)

Cons:
- 1/4 of the resort looks like an abandoned ghost town. Villas are all left open with furniture left outside on the patio.
- A lot of the resort needs a facelift. The roofing on the main building is very discoloured and looks like it will collapse at any time. The vertical bars along the railings have been broken and replaced with branches. Shower heads and bath tubs are old and just looks dirty. Makes the overall room feel cheap.
- Doorman needs to be trained as he was not friendly and made me feel like he didn't want to be there. Front desk staff were also not helpful at all. When I was checkin in, there were 4 staff members behind the counter. and checking in 2 guests in front of me. I felt that they could have assisted me check in at the same time. Surely at a 5 star hotel like this, there are more checkin stations.
- RM100 for their dinner buffet is not worth it. Put it this way, you get better food if you ordered room service. In short, food is not up to 5 star hotel standard. The only thing that probably made up for it is the cultural show that accompanied the meal.

In summary, if you could look past some of the cosmetics of the resort, it is a great and relaxing place to visit. My opinion is to avoid the dinner buffet at all costs. Stand outside to watch the cultural show. This is NOT a 5 star resort at the moment, 4 star at most. All staff members except the doorman were excellent during our visit and they are the ones who make the resort a wonderful place to visit.

The service is really nice. The staff is superb. The location is nice and it has a large private beach. Wifi is available in the lobby, pool and parts of the beach. Be aware that this resort is far away from the city centre and that drinks and food is really expensive and there is nothing nearby where you could eat or drink. The reason that I didn't give this 5 stars is that this is just too large for me. Too much mass tourism.
