Sutera Harbour Resort (The Pacific Sutera & The Magellan Sutera)
Ranked #8 of 91 Hotels in Kota Kinabalu
Reviewed May 19, 2010

We had a deluxe sea view room overlooking the sea.
Hotel was a bit old...and need some maintenance.
But overall very friendly staff, great service!

The man-made beach is a tad too small, but the water was really clear.
I could see the fishes swimming around.
Remember to catch sun set while staying her...the view was fantastic!

We came to The Magellan after 6 nights at Le Meridien, the lobby and views were beautiful as was the pool and grounds. Room was a bit disappointing / small TV very low beds and for what we paid we were very disappointed. Food was an absolute rip off and we went to lunch at Al Frescos and it took ages for the food to come and wasn't worth what we paid for it. Beach was very dirty and I for one wouldn't swim. Gym was amazing though. All in all very disappointing. We went back to The Meridien following night.

1.Location - Good! it is near to airport(only take 10 to 15 minutes from Hotel to airport)
- Bravo! It provide free shuttle bus to city frequently/almost per hour (it is convenient for customer to shopping in City)
2.Cleanliness - Terrible! We found that there is stains(fist size) on the bed lien. Also there is lipstick stains left in the cup when we have breakfast. It can't accepted in 5 star resort hotel!
3.Service - Not flexible! When we go to Five Sail Restaurant for breakfast, we want to sit near the swimming pool and there is plenty of table(for 4 person) available. However, the waitress just told me that since you are 2 pax and only can sit on the table for 2 person. Ridiculous! At that time there are many tables available and not much customer are waiting, are they really service-oriented? are they really understand customer need and thinking? The answer is No!
- The worse thing happened on 8th May Morning around 5am, suddenly the room power supply is out and I call the housecare and the reply is that the electricity of whole city is gone! From 5am to 10am we make 3 call to ask technician to fix the problem! Please imagine that there is no possible happen in 5 star hotel, however It Just Happen in such Hotel!

My new wife and I took the 3 day honeymoon package at the Magellan Sutera.

Kota Kinabalu is a town of specific attractions, and our stay at the Magellan was quite enjoyable. We were greeted at the airport and transferred in a van so new there was still plastic on some of the interior. Our checkin and welcome briefing was handled while enjoying a fruit drink in the very impressive, traditional wooden style hotel atrium/lobby.

Our harbour view deluxe room was well located with a stunning sunset view of the harbour, and our waiting bottle of martini asti, while not champagne, was very enjoyable. We were touched by the especially romantic bed dressing and bathtub rose petals. A well made complimentary cheesecake also was delivered to our room which was a great touch. Fittings and fixtures were pleasing and functional and there was plenty of wood and marble in the room.

The resort is quite large, with a marina and country club. We walked to the Pacific and were very pleased we chose the Magellan for our stay. This is a resort, and be prepared to accept the pricing that accompanies this. Facilities, including the complimentary use of the pool and small beach, were well enjoyed. Poolside cocktail service was very entertaining, and a small range of local drinks were very beach resort.

Food options were many and varied. Our package included a set menu dinner at Ferdinands restaurant, which offered tableside service. Our set dinner had an interesting menu; it is with regret I forgot to view the regular menu, which as mild foodies was no doubt more entertaining. The winelist we received was limited and moderately priced, however the practicalities of wine transport and storage in a tropical region go some way to easing this.

Our couples spa treatment was very enjoyable, and we had a great visit to the local resort island as part of our package. We undertook a vigorous walk to the peak of one of the islands under the canopy and walkway. Lizards and mosquitos were plentiful.

Our early morning airport transfer was well handled and we even received a very well packed travelling breakfast. A fun stay.

I stayed at the Pacific Sutera with my husband and daughter in April 2010 for a 14 night holiday that turned out to be 24 nights! (as we were unable to return to the UK following the disruption from the Icelandic volcano).
A genuinely pleasant stay which was complimented by the friendliness of ALL the staff at this hotel. The bedrooms were spacious and clean (albeit showing their age in places), with separate shower and bath. The air conditioning was quiet enough to leave running through the night which was wonderful. Comfortable bed too! Public areas are well kept, with beautiful well maintained grounds/gardens.
No matter whether you stay at the Pacific or Magellen you can use all the facilities within the whole resort - pools, restaurants, bars etc. Pricing for identical food and beverage items differs across the resort so watch for this.
We booked direct with the hotel 5 weeks before arrival and received a long stay rate which included breakfast. After considering Le Meridien in KK we were glad we chose this resort for its location on the coast, great choice of swimmimg pools and friendly down to earth staff. Le Meridien, is on the waterfront but right in the hustle and bustle of the city.
We used the hotel watersports centre SeaQuest to visit the islands of Sapi and Manukan. Professional set up and the most amazing snorkelling we have experienced (better than the caribbean!). We encountered half a dozen or so 6ft Monitor Lizards roamimg free on Sapi - amazing. The hotel also arranged our day trip to the Kinabalu National Park (run by Only in Borneo), which was good. The canopy walk at Poring was memorable and highly recommended, unless you hate heights!
We organised our own flights to Sandakan prior to leaving the UK, to visit the Sepilok Orang Utang Rehabilitation Centre. We stayed at the Sepilok Forest Edge Resort which I will rate separately (also very good). This is a must - do not miss it! The Orang Utang feeding was a great experience.
The hotel also provides a free shuttle service into KK, although a taxi also only costs MYR10. Taxi from the airport MYR30.
A few of the team at the hotel deserve recognition for making our holiday memorable for the right reasons - Ronny (waves); Sameer (shuttle driver) and Suzanne (duty manager).
We would return to this resort again.

My wife & I loved this hotel. It was absolute paradise & did not even let Sun burn (I thought close to 3rd degree burns, wife disagreed though) dampen spirits or ruin our stay. The staff were brilliant & very friendly, I was invited to play in the bar staffs football team but unfortunatley could not due to my lack of use of sun protection cream.
Great pool, great sea view from room, very clean, very nice all round.

This was my second time back to KK and to the Pacific Sutera. My first stay several years back was not great and this second stay was part-compensation for the first stay. We went with parents and our 2 young kids. Check-in was smooth with lovely welcome drinks in the lounge and friendly staff. We were upgraded to a humongous suite with fabulous ocean views, a huge bathroom, a sitting room, dining table and kitchenette (no cooking facilities though). My kids ran around hiding in the cupboards and the extra space and promptly declared "I LOVE Malaysia!!". The other normal room that we had was also of an acceptable size with a balcony affording fresh air and a seaview. The kids spent most of their time in the kiddy area of the pool and had a marvellous time. Watersports were also easily available with a third-party operator located in the hotel. The hotel operates a free city shuttle which I took a couple times to do some shopping in the city. Great (and quick) sunsets could be enjoyed from our room and off the small beach. While we had an excellent time all-in-all, the feel of the premises is that it had seen better days despite being well maintained. Breakfast was a good selection. My only grouse is the exhorbitant price of the food and the quality was below 4-5* standard. Service was generally friendly.
