“Had a wonderful stay”
Reviewed November 23, 2006

We spent 4 nights at the Sutera Harbour Megallen Wing last summer and loved every minute of it, I still think back fondly to it now. It is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. I found it to be well worthy of its 5* status, the rooms were huge, comfortable, modern and clean (especially the wonderful, spacious, marbled bathroom), the staff were efficient and the food was of a good standard; good choice of restaurants; an excellent variety at breakfast and good cocktail/ snack bar at the pool.

The pool area was nice and relaxing, big, soft, fresh towels provided and although the beach area was small, we knew this before we arrived as it says so on the website. Anyway, there are 3 wonderful national-park-status islands are just over the water with gorgeous sand, corals and sealife for snorkelling (although watch out for the aggressive tropical fish that DEMAND feeding by Manukan jetty, go round the beach and they are much more amicable). It was really easy to arrange transport to these islands and also to do other activites such as jet skiing and parasailing - all at the activities desk.

We did spend one day by the pool at the other wing and it didnt seem to have quite the same 'panache' as the Megellan Wing.

The highlight however had to be the Mandara Spa. What a wonderful experience! We went for the couples package and had a fantastic massage with delectable oils, in beautiful, tranquil surroundings, attentive therapists and soothing music, well worth the money (£120).

Earlier on in our stay before arriving at the Sutera Harbour we did spend a day poolside at the Shangri-La and I have to say I preferred the atmosphere and general ambience of the Sutera Harbour although there seemed to be more activity, bustle and families at the Shangri-La. I would definately go back to the Sutera Harbour if i'm ever in the region again.

On our journey around Sabah, we were told we were going to love this place. We were in the Pacific Sutera (seemed to be the cheaper of the 2 hotels) and were in a deluxe room. I didn't particularly note anything deluxe about it. It was OK, big enough and with a nice bed but nothing special.

The room was freezing when we got there as the air conditioning was on fuill blast. We had to leave the front door open to get some warm air in! I found the bathroom a bit dirty, mould around the edges and a hair in the bath.

The resort is nice enough, good pool with a tiny beach. The best part was the meal at the Spice House which was great. Breakfast was plentiful but the service was a bit slow - not enough egg counter cooks!

Tiny gym considering the size of the hotel. Free bus in Kota Kinabalu. It's further away but the Nexus is much nicer.

  • Liked — Spice House restaurant - great food
  • Disliked — Cold, slightly unclean room
  • Tips/Secrets — The magellan looked much nicer

Me, my hubby and my 2 year old son just got back from a 2+ weeks holiday visiting KK, Manila, and Bandar! We spent 7 nights in Magellan Sutera. The Hotel is beautiful, we got upgraded to a Club room overlooking the Harbour, which was great....

After having 2 disastrous evening verturing up town for dinner, we spent the rest of our evenings eating at the hotel... We ate at Five Sails, Al Fresco, Cafe Boleh, Silk Garden, and the Marina Restaurant. Food was excellent in all restaurant. Service was also excellent.

We spent most of our time in the Marina Olympic Size pool and the childrens water slide pool. It was excellent. The pool in Magellan was good too, but if you have children, the Marina pool is a better choice.

The shuttle to the town was good, very reliable. Though, on our return, we always ended getting a cab back. But thats by choice.

Little Magellan Kids Club
The club was on our way to the room, so my little one went there nearly everyday. Only for few minutes, just playing with the toys they've got. As he is only 2, I couldn't really leave him there. But just the same, he enjoyed going in and out that club.

Overall, the hotel was very nice. Staffs were very friendly. Our room was always immaculately clean.

However, there was one thing that really offset all the good experiences. During our stay, there were religious groups that were booked in, in the hotel. They were using some of the function rooms of the hotel and you could hear them singing their songs very loudly. This actually soured the whole holiday. I dont mind groups joining a conference or banquet in a hotel. Most of the time, they are confined within the Conference or Banquet Room. These religious groups were also confined in the function rooms. However, you could hear them singing their songs all throughout the day. We respect their belief and that, but we were on holiday staying on a hotel and not on a church. We have mentioned this on our comments to the hotel. Lets just hope, the management can see that people on holiday would like to relax and not to listen to songs of praise being sung so loudly.

The Magellan Sutera Harbour was excellent. Food great, pools great, staff lovely , grounds beautiful. We stayed in the Magellan Club which offers bigger rooms but no balcony. It also offers free 'canapes and drinks ' every evening which was great.
Really the only critique we had was that the mattresses are literally hard as rock! Apparently they get complaints about it all the time and the only thing they can do about it is put extra quilts under your sheet, which doesn't make much difference let me tell you ! We both had really sore backs because the mattresses were just way too hard. Hate to 'nitpick' but it makes a big difference after a wonderful day, you can't get a good nights sleep to face the next day.

  • Liked — outdoor areas, food, staff
  • Disliked — Beds way too hard
  • Tips/Secrets — be aware the beds are too hard and can make for a sore back and bad night's sleep!

Two days ago my family -2 children (11 and 8), husband, mother (84) and her husband (85) returned from 8 nights at Magellan Sutera. We are still pinching ourselves and wondering at how lucky we were in choosing this resort. I had read some reviews on this site and was feeling a little concerned, but I had no need to be.
Our only hiccup was that we arrived at 6:30am and of course our rooms were not ready. This was something that we had not thought about. The Concierge organised for it to be stored and we then went into KK to see the Sunday markets. There was not a problem getting us onto the shuttle bus, even though we had not officially checked in. When we got back we went to the magnificent Sunday Buffet (seafood) and ate to our hearts content. For everyone it was a real eye opener. Staff were polite and friendly and did not balk when we had no room number. They chased it up for us.
All three of our rooms were organised to be on the same floor - the kids had their own room next to us. The rooms were harbour view and everything was in place and clean. We all received a plate of welcome fruit (very different snake fruit!)
Buffet breakfast at 5 Sails each morning was included in our price adn we were amazed at the quality and variety each morning. The children found it very hard to have milk and toast on the morning after we got home. They had all sorts of taste experiences and it was constant learning experiences for them. Some things were noi to our taste, but we were the visitors in another country and we were on holidays so we did not let things upset us. It all goes to the experience.
Drink and resort meals are expensive, which applies to all resorts I think. We restocked our bar fridge from supplies that we bought in the city at a supermarket and used our duty free liquor. North Borneo Traders also has a small amount of food, including icecreams and drinks available at cheaper prices. Eating down at Alfrescos allowed the children to have meals that they were comfortable with and, for we adults, to have some variety as well. Happy hour each day between 5-8pm was a fun time. We had room service a couple of times and found that it came quickly and well prepared (although expensive which we expected).
Most of our tours we booked through Wildlife Expeditions (based in the resort) and found them to be courteous and well organised. The night before an outing we would have a note slipped under the door reminding us of times and where we had to be. We had to cancel one of our daughter's tickets and were willingly reinmbursed minus a small booking fee.
We used the business centre to access the internet as we wanted to check bank accounts. Was no problem at all for a small fee.
Shuttle bus was great and extremely handy. Yes, you do need to book in but that makes sense. We never missed a seat although some people did as they came down at the last minute and expected to get on. When a taxi was needed the concierge had one ready within minutes.
My mother fell in KK and hurt her knee quite badly. She got herself back to the resort on the bus and from the time she arrived back al the staff were wonderful to her. The hotel doctor suggested she go to hospital so she was helped to her room to pack some items. One of the managers followed the ambulance to the Sabah Medical Centre and rang regularly to get updates. They also arranged taxi transport fo rher husband to get to and from teh hospital. When she returned (after a 2 night stay), staff that had dealings with us, personally signed a Get Well card and provided a lovely bowl of fruit to their room. A wheel chair was provided for her for the rest of our stay at no cost.
For the kids the Games Room provided some fun although they did not have much time there. Little Magellan (kid's club) is aimed at a younger age (probably up to about 6 /7) so this was not used by us. My daughter however wanted to get her hair braided (last minute decision), and this was organised for us without a problem, even though it was on a day that they did not do. We were just told to come in as soon as we got back from that day's outing.
We found that the pools were not too busy and if the main one was then we went over to the Olympic one and the water slides.
There were lots of facilities that people could use but we found that we did not have enough time to do everything. That's life I suppose.
Becasue of the design of the resort the noise level was maybe a little more than you might have at home, but as visitors we need to remember that there are lots of people with differnet expectations and behaviours around. If you don't think that you can handlee a little difference in your life for a short time, then maybe your holiday would be better spent at home.
We would thoroughly recommend this resort for families or anyone that wants a bit of pampering in a friendly environment. It is a whole experience and we loved it.
