“GREAT WEEKEND IN KOTA KINABALU”
Reviewed June 8, 2010

Hotel
Was in KK for 4D/3N from 27-30 May. Stayed in Promenade hotel which was in the city centre facing the waterfront. Booking online was hassle free albeit they require you to make full prepayment with your credit card. You may not get your refund if for whatever reasons decide to shorten your stay. Upon checking in, was quite unpleasantly surprised that our Deluxe room with King bed was unavailable since the online booking was made 2 weeks before. However, the front desk was quick to re-act and provided us a room upgrade to a jnr suite w no additional cost. Sweet..... Our room was huge with a spectacular view of the sea. It comes with a separate living + bedroom. The bathroom was super huge too. It had a separate shower area + bathtub. You could actually fit in a singe bed in the toilet too. Pillows and bedsheet were nicely clean and pressed, though I find the pillows too soft for my liking. Overall a good hotel, however may stay at another hotel closer to the main city centre & malls. There's many smaller boutique hotels which are just directy across from the waterfront eateries & direct links to the Warisan square mall.

Waterfront
The hotel was about 08 mins walk to the watefrront restaurants & pubs. Honestly, My hubby and I weren't expecting much night entertainment in this small city, considering that we were in M'sia. How wrong we were. Tsk tsk. It was a delight to discover a row of restaurants + Aussies & Irish pubs lining the waterfront serving a mix of western and local seafood dishes in their menu. Beers & cocktails were reasonably priced too! One of the pubs was having happy hrs all night long. Had my 1-4-1mojitos & caipiroska at RM18 nett. Sigh...wish I was there now as I'm typing this review.

Must Do
1) You gotta visit the Tun Abdul Rahman marine park islands. There are 5 island altogether, but it would suffice to just visit 01 island if you have limited time. We visited Pulau Sapi which was just a 20min boatride from Jesselton ferry terminal. You could approach any of the counters when you reach the terminal. It cost RM 27 for 01 pax for 2 ways. Suggest you rent the snorkeling gear at the jetty counter too at RM10 coz' the rental is RM15 on the island. You need not go deep into the water as the fishes are swimming just around you. The marine fishes were colourful and a phletora of species to be seen. This island trip would indeed be suitable for adults and children of all ages. there's Parasailing too if you're into adventure sports. 15mins at RM130 for 2pax, which I thought was reasonable . Remembered that it cost double in Bali.

KK Park
If you have another day to spare, do make time to have a walk at the KK Park & hike up to the Canopy walk. Unfortunately, we were unable to climb the Mount Kinabalu due to time constraint. But I will definitely return next yr to climb & conquer the tallest mountain in South East Asia.

Massage
Pleanty of message spas in KK city that is proper & clean. For 1/2hr foot massage + 01 hr body massage @RM50 bucks. So that is another wonderful respite to look forward too after hrs of walking, exploring and water activites.

Lastly, do have all the seafood you crave for. KK is indeed a seafood haven for seafood lovers out there. There are plentiful seafood restaurants in town or by the waterfront. Be it local or chinese style cooking, you have plenty to choose from.

Overall I would rate 7/10 for our trip to KK.

Have stayed here a few times now, clean rooms, good location and value for money. The staff are friendly and helpful, also only 5 minutes walk to the restaurants and bars.

We have no hesitation in highly recommending this hotel in Kota Kinabulu. We stayed in this hotel for a total of seven nights spread over two different stays. The first days were with our tour group. Since we were returning to the same hotel after the tour, the hotel kindly allowed us to leave excess baggage behind and to allow us the use of a safety deposit box for our valuables – at no charge. Our room was large with a bay window which had a partial view of the sea. The carpet was clean and the bedding changed on a daily basis. The hotel is now cut off from the sea shore due to construction. It is a short walked to all of the sights in KK, such as malls, night market, fish market, vegetable market.

This hotel does have some odd quirks though. For example, we needed to repeatedly call for hand or bath towels, which were brought up and for which we had to sign. As well there were some minor problems in the room, such as the safe not working or lamps not working either. As soon as the call was made someone was at the door ready to make whatever repair was necessary. The pool is in an odd place and somewhat awkward to access.

These quirks though did not interfere with our enjoyment of the hotel. The breakfast is excellent with a full buffet of western and Asian foods. The internet rate that we used to book our room included a daily cocktail. We assumed that this would a fruit juice drink. We were certainly surprised when we had to check in on the 11th floor. The rate included its own breakfast room. We chose instead to have our breakfast on the main floor. We were not charged extra for this service even though it was RM10 more per breakfast. The daily cocktail turned out to be a buffet of snack-type foods and all the drinks we wanted, whether tea or coffee, soft drinks or alcoholic beverages. This was a very pleasant surprise for us. We enjoyed the snacks and drinks while watching the sunset over the bay from the 11th floor patio. So by all means book over the internet at the special internet rate if it is still available. It was less than any internet wholesaler and included the buffet breakfast and cocktails. It was excellent value for the price.

Bog-standard low-end business hotel. Pretty clean, mid-sized rooms. Good location close to nice water front restaurants. Surprisingly good bar band. Hmm... For budget business travellers, this should do fine.

Stayed at this hotel in town with a group of friends after climbing Mt Kinabalu. I’d recommend staying here if you want a decent place to stay and not spend too much at the 5-star hotels in the city.

Do not confuse this hotel with the neighbouring (and probably affiliated) Promenade Hotel Apartments. Stayed in that one before and it was terrible (see the other travellers’ reviews under that hotel listing).

There is undoubtedly cheaper lodging available in Kota Kinabalu (KK) and definitely more luxurious ones but for the price we paid (RM212 nett/ nite w/o breakfast), I think this is the best balance of comfort, cleanliness and price.

Pluses:
- Free wifi internet (at the lobby only)
- Nice decent clean rooms with everything working fine
- Location not the best in KK but walkable to most places of interest within 10mins

Negatives (nothing major, but where service could perhaps be improved):
- Requested for non-smoking rooms when we made our email booking but we were all put onto a smoking floor. Fortunately, the rooms has no smoke smells at all so it all ended ok
- TV (CRT) reception was weak (not sure if the TV was going to conk off or the reception was bad)
- Only 1 key card was provided per room. You can request for a 2nd key card (RM20 deposit) but they ran out of blank programmable cards on the 1st day)

Summary: All in all, a very pleasant stay in a comfortable & affordable hotel. Service and amenities could be improved but for the price you’re paying, I’d say this is a good deal. I’d stay here again if I were to return to KK.

We booked this hotel last minute on the internet while traveling in Borneo. When we arrived, I was really surprised at how beautiful the lobby was. The rooms were also nice, but not as modern looking. The buffet was really delicious! We had been traveling for about 4 weeks and the chef here at The Promenade did a wonderful job catering to all travelers. I actually counted 77 entres and 39 condiments...wow!

The exercise facility did not have a/c. Only fans to pull out the hot air. So, this made our workouts a bit warmer than hoped for. The locker rooms were nice, including a sauna, steam room and jacuzzi and very clean. The pool was small but good. A bit of a walk to get from the lockers to the pool and you did hear noise from the traffic while at the pool.

The location is good, but since it is situated at the edge of the city centre it took about a 20 min brisk walk to reach Jesselton Point and that edge of town. Not a complaint though since the weather was perfect and the walking was enjoyable.

Well, I have been to this hotel in numerous occasion. It is situated by the seaside and the sea view is great. Room clean and in very satisfatory condition. The breakfast is one of the best that I have when compared to others. The only bad experience that I had was in the lift. I was stuck in the lift for about 10 minutes but it does happen to someone and unfortunately, it was my turn. The swimming pool is not disclosed enough as non hotel guest also could view an access it.

Overall, it is a recommended hotel.
