“Great Location”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

Excellent hotel in a great location on the river front and in the middle of all the action. If you want a hotel in a city location this is the one. The breakfast is excellent, wonderful choices suitable for all tastes. They offer lunch and dinner buffets. Staff friendly and willing to help. A shopping centre is next door where you can buy essentials, a more up market mall is only a ten minute walk away.
Open air food market is located on the river front where you can eat with the locals.

Room Tip: Delux room facing the river on the 5th floor.

We checked in at night and was greeted with a lovely clean and spacious room! Our king size bed could fit three! or maybe four haha! l strong rain shower , island sink and an ironing board and iron to boot! The room did not have a musty smell despite the fact that Hyatt Regency is a pretty old hotel. the pool is gorgeous and you can see the sea from the pool. Overall I had a great night sleep ( well not much sleep seeing that KK has a great night life ) but yeah it was still great! Very friendly staff, very accommodating ensuring that your stay at the Hyatt is superbly pleasant. how accommodating were they> here is our funny story. We called for a electric kettle as we found it odd there was none in the room. the following day we found it in one of the hidden drawers and the staff did not tell us but instead brought us the kettle the day before. Perhaps he wanted to safe us the embarrassment hahah!

This hotel is pretty old and dated. In some places the décor doesn't seem to have been updated since the hotel was built (quite a while ago!)
We booked into a club room, but there was a mix up with the booking so we were given a suite, which was huge! It was comfortable enough, but again, in parts was dated and not in full working order (our wash basin didn't have running water and the towel rail kept falling off the wall).
Nevertheless, we enjoyed our cocktails in the club rooms watching the sunset each evening, and only have praise for the staff there. They were lovely and extremely helpful, often going out of their way to book our days out or make our stay in KK more pleasant.

Room Tip: Book a club room so you have access to the lounge. Breakfast and cocktails are held on the 13th flo...

I stayed here for eight nights at the end of April/beginning of May on a business visit.

The front desk staff are very friendly, warm, courteous, efficient and professional. A couple of them even remembered my name and addressed me as such in the mornings. Given the amount of people passing through a hotel of that size, I found that quite impressive and a nice touch.

I requested a room as high as possible following the comments of a previous reviewer who had mentioned on the noise of a hotel function coming up through the floors. My room was on the tenth floor and very quiet indeed.

My room had a sea view and, unbeknown to me at the time, commanded a significant premium over the town view. I'm not sure the premium is worth it but the sea view is beautiful and the town view of a shabby adjacent building is rather grim. See for yourself and perhaps try and negotiate a reduced premium for the sea view.

Anyway, the rooms are particularly large, I would say at least 50 square metres. The work desk and surrounding space is more than adequate, wi-fi has a good signal throughout the hotel and not just in your room, sufficient power sockets for lap tops and other devices.

The room has a decent sized television should you find the time to relax.

The beds are pretty big and supremely comfortable.

The bathrooms is very spacious with a separate toilet room. The bath/shower has a large window into the main room which is great for watching the football while you shower. Not so good for movies though as you need the volume cranked up to a ridiculous volume which the neighbours might object too.

The wardrobes, although large, have an absence of underwear drawers which is unusual.

The breakfast in the restaurant is very good. Superb choice which caters for western and Asian diets. However, the a la carte menu for the evenings is very limited. If you're working late and just need a bite then it's adequate but if you have the time, I'd suggest eating out. That said, the Mosaic cafe is pretty good and their selection of chocolate cake is to die for.

The gym is pretty well equipped and even has a Smith machine. The pool however, is adequate but not much use if you like to swim a kilometre before work - it's to small for that but ok to relax by.

As a final point, I checked out in a hurry and left my iPad to TV connector and HDMI lead behind. The hotel located and couriered them back to me which is pretty good service.

In summary, I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel but would advise you to be sure of the rate you're paying for your room upon check-in.

Room Tip: If you're on business and need to work in your room, go as high as possible as there are frequen...

Stayed here for 8 days at end of March / Beginning of April.
Large airy clean rooms with an excellent sesk for business use.
Great shortage of drawer space to store your clothes. Wardrobe did not have aby sub sections.
Breakfast was nothing special for western type breakfast.
Wi fi was slow but reliable.
Good business room at a good rate

Room Tip: You have a choice Sea facing or town facing. As a business traveller I did not find the extra charg...

Found this hotel to be a little old when I first walked in to the lobby. But despite that, when I checked into the room, I was pleasantly surprised at the elegant design of the room and how well kept it was.

I got the opportunity to check into 2 rooms with different layouts. The first night, the wash basin area was a little island outside the bath and toilet area. I thought the layout was really unique. The second night, the design of the layout was more common. Overall, in terms of cleanliness and comfort of the room, I would say it is excellent for the price I paid for.

The breakfast buffet was quite decent as well with quite a good spread.

Did not manage to try to the hotel facilities out but I definitely will come back to this hotel during my next visit.

An advice to those planning to try this hotel out, ask for the sea view rooms. You may get a pleasant view of the Borneo harbour.

This is a nice, if rather dated hotel, with very old fashioned décor in the public areas. We had a large very comfortable room, almost spotlessly clean, with a very nice bathroom and shower. The aircon was not very powerful, and turns off when you leave the room, so leave a business card or similar in the ‘master switch’ if you want to return to a cool room.

You get 1 hour of complimentary wifi, that works well (thereafter chargeable). There is a modest swimming pool.

Food seems to be pretty good, we ate breakfast and a lunch in the hotel which were fine. The main café/restaurant is in the hotel atrium, which makes it rather noisy at times.

Bar prices are a little high, 22RM plus tax and service for a Carlsberg beer, and even tea/coffee were very expensive at about 14RM. (Tip - watch the world go by, with inexpensive beer and a basic meal, at the Upperstar Café and Bar, first floor terrace, just over the road from the hotel.)

Hotel staff were friendly and helpful, they were happy to give me a late check out at no extra charge.

The hotel has a good location in Kota Kinabulu. You can easily walk to most places of interest (mainly the markets and waterfront) as there really isn’t much else to see or do. Kota Kinabulu is mainly of interest as a stepping stone to trekking on Mount Kinabulu etc. or to transfer to other destinations in Sabah. The airport is only a 20 minute taxi ride away.
