I stayed here for two nights with my family.

The cost was very high but i thought i was paying for a Shangri-La service. I was disappointed.

The rooms were slightly small for a spa resort however meal times was chaotic. Breakfast was one of the worst where tables were never ready and the small number of staff were running around trying to clear tables and prepare them for the next set of guests. Tables were left dirty and we had to get our own cutlery as the staff were busy with other tasks.

Hence the meal times disappointed us a lot although the spread was good.

We used the watet sports services for snorkelling which was priced well.

I was not impressed at all with the Shangri-la and hence would not really return here.

They desperetaley need more staff to cope with the resturant demand.

One thing that my recent Malaysian trip has shown me is that physically revisiting past memories is not always a good idea... thankfully, coming back to Shangri-la Tanjung Ague Resort was not one of these experiences, and within seconds of being out of the taxi, my wife and I knew we'd made the right decision to come back after seven years.

The staff were friendly, welcoming and efficient. We were checked in within a few minutes, and were then taken up to the Horizon Club.... sorry - Kinabalu Club Lounge, whilst our luggage was taken to our room.

This was one of the first changes we noticed - as well as changing its name, the lounge is more family friendly - there are now two happy hours, with one from 4:30 - 6:30 for families, with a further two hours for adults.

I thoroughly recommend the extra expense of the club rooms, especially if you're travelling with youngsters - the lounge and its very attentive staff is an oasis of calm than can be used throughout the day. Breakfast is done on a smaller scale here, so you get a quieter start to the day. You can then come in whenever you feel like for tea/coffee/juice and a cake, with alcohol and more substantial snacks (menu varies, but includes satay, mini burgers, cakes, cheese and biscuits etc) during the happy hour.

The room and public areas spotless, though yes - you do see the odd bug and/or gecko lizard in the open corridors between areas. The room had a queen-sized bed and a sofa bed for our son, yet there was still plenty of room to move about.

The rooms have been refurbished since we were last here, and other improvements have been made to the hotel amenities. Most noticeable are the improvements to the pool area - both in the form of an infinity pool and the mini water park which kept children amused for hours on end. My wife was also very impressed with the Chi Island spa.

All of the above was enough to give the resort 5 stars, but there was more... my wife had her birthday whilst we were there, though we hadn't told anyone. I don't know if they got the date from our passports or from the cards in the room, but when we returned in the afternoon, "Happy Birthday" had been spelt out in petals on our bed and a slice of birthday cake left for my wife... it made me feel quite inadequate as a husband, but for my wife if was an unbelievably wonderful gesture from the hotel.

Hopefully, it won't be another seven years before we get back!

Room Tip: Though expensive, the Club rooms are worth the extra

We stayed for 4 nights and were utterly disappointed with the service. We checked in at 4 ish but after lining up for half an hr we were told that our three rooms will not be available And they could not tell us when rooms could be available. instead we were asked when we will be back. when we said ard 7 we were informed, probably. Next to us was another hotel guest complaining that she had been waiting for her two rooms and were asked to wait for an hr. she then found that one of her rooms were still cleaning up while the other was taken up by other guests!
We requested for a later check out upon our arrival. We were told that even though our check in time was delayed for hours we can only hv a check out at 1 pm maximum. We settled for this. We were not confident in the service delivered so we tried to confirm this late check out arrangement and then was told that no record of such request was found. We insisted and was told that not all rooms could be arranged. With back and forth calls and after being questioned on details of the staff who gave the promise we were finally given this one hr "favour".
There was no tooth paste combs etc basic things in our room. Every night someone was not refilled. Sometimes bath gel sometimes towel etc and request needed to be made.
Wifi is so weak equivalent to none.
Hygiene is another problem. Flies r everywhere. The table mattresses were not changed during breakfast buffet and floors were dirty and not cleaned with food everywhere when we tried to sit after the previous guests left.
All in all this is not a hotel I'll recommend if u want a pleasant stay.

Stayed hear March before any school holidays so very few children at hotel.

As we were party of 4 adults we organised the hotel transport (mini bus) to collect us at the airport and works out better than 2 taxis . Taxi was waiting for our arrival and we were greeted at the reception like royalty. Our luggage was taken off us and we were quickly checked in. We were booked for a mountain view Kinabalu Wing room and we kept this but upgraded to the Kinabalu Club access which when you work out the cost of breakfast, drinks, taxi to KK and back at night the upgrade to the club is well worth it. The food and drinks served up in the club each night was superb , the staff fantastic and it meant we did not require dinner most nights.

Families with children would enjoy the Tanjung Wing close to the play area etc however we can certainly recommend the Kinabalu Wing for adults especially if, using the Club.

Found all staff fantastic and guests should always remember respect is a two way thing and if you talk with staff and show respect you will always be rewarded with amazing attention in return.

We contacted the hotel concierge by telephone a week prior to arriving and booked our visit and seat on bus to the Orangutans at Rasa Ria and I would recommend this to everyone.

Did not use the spa as prices are quite high however this is a 5 star hotel.

Overall excellent hotel and amazing sunsets.
