We spent four weeks in Malaysian Borneo (mid-September to mid-October) as part of our two-month honeymoon trip. For the first half of the trip we traveled around Indonesia independently, but as there was so much we wanted to do in Borneo we needed some specialist help to co-ordinate a comprehensive itinerary. As we normally plan our own trips, we were looking for a company that would cater for individuals and not just promote formulaic package tours.
Naturalis were perfect for our needs. As well as being able to organise the ‘must-see’ attractions in Borneo, Luca really understands the requirements of adventure travellers to get off the beaten track and immerse themselves in the country they are visiting. We had some initial ideas about what we wanted to do and Luca was able to both arrange these as well as suggest some other great activities that we may not have discovered, or may not have been able to organise in the time frame if planning on our own. It was really good to be able to work so closely with him in tailoring our itinerary. He provided some great advice, and our communications before we left the UK gave us a lot of confidence that the trip would run smoothly.
We did the following activities:
Maliau Basin - full loop (5D/4N) – Challenging but very rewarding jungle trek in remote area. Great outdoor adventure.
Mount Kinabalu (3D/2N) – Amazing views, a nice day hike up to Laban Rata, becoming more challenging from there to the summit.
Kelabit Highlands (4D/3N) – Authentic home-stay experience, off the beaten track.
Danum Valley (4D/3N) – Great variety of wildlife, guide was both knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The nature trails catered for all levels of fitness and this is a much gentler experience compared to the Maliau Basin, focusing on the wildlife rather than the trek.
Kinabatangan River Safari (4D/3N) – Abundance of wildlife and guide had excellent knowledge and spotting skills.
Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre – we were lucky enough to see so many orangutans in the wild but it was also really good to be able to see how orphaned/injured orangutans are being cared for.
Naturalis were fantastic in the attention to detail and involvement in making sure we were happy with everything. We were really impressed that Luca took the time to meet us on arrival to talk through our itinerary, called halfway through the month to check everything was OK, and also came to say goodbye the night before we left. We really felt looked after. The entire trip ran like clockwork, our driver was always on time and knew where he was taking us. Everything was very well organised. We had a truly amazing time in Borneo and we would definitely recommend Naturalis to others.
