Attraction details
Owner description: The North Borneo Railway runs two weekly return departures (Wednesday, Saturday) from Kota Kinabalu to Papar, year round. Lasting approximately 4 hours, passengers experience the lush landscape of the coastal and rural regions of Sabah. A typical 'tiffin' colonial lunch will be served on the return trip.

This turned out to be much better than expected. The train staff all dressed up in old colonial outfits, the 1950's music over the station speakers putting on back in time.
Iced Tea and breakfast as you start to wind your way through the jungle, it's almost if you are back in time.

A step back in time with great service and quality!
Check in at the old station office and receive an old "passport" to take along the trip with you. It contains information about the history of the railway and towns you visit as well as a map of the route and a basic map of the towns you have time to explore. This is stamped at each station you visit - great novely factor for children!
Tiffin breakfast and lunch served onboard which was tasty and plentiful.
Loved being able to get off in local towns en-route and have a walk around with the locals. The cool refreshing towel you receive when you step back on board is a lovely well needed touch!

This trip we felt was way overpriced. However there were good points; the ambiance is enhanced by the 'British Raj' look of the staff in their pith helmets, the lemon tea served at the start was delicious (could have been continued the whole journey considering the price), first stop at Kinarut was interesting seeing the Chinese temple; the smell of the smoke from the engine was so nostalgic (took both of us back to our childhoods - one in Tasmania, the other in NSW), the second stop at Papar to turn the engine and see the markets. These were disappointing in content - saw no local crafts at all, we only had 30 mins to see them and with a walk to get to it and allow time for walk back - not a lot of actual market time. The tiffin lunch was nice but could have been hotter. We did love the ice cold towels we had on our table after Kinarut and Papar, very good as it was a hot day. Loved the fact that they swapped us around so we saw the other side on the return journey, even if this meant we missed the water buffaloes!! All this sounds wonderful, but at over AUD90 per person (MYR290) + taxi is a tad overpriced compared to other excursions/attractions in KK

Oh what fun! A steam train built in Lancashire and travelling through the Borneon countryside with full colonial ambience. There are whistles and cries of "all aboard!", a light breakfast, 2 stops to look at villages and a superb tiffin lunch. I loved it! It is not to be missed. Book ahead if travelling with friends and you will sit close (tables are for 3 and are reserved for you).
