For pearl lovers, this is a place where you can bargain.
However, for those who are particular on the quality of pearls, you should visit jamilah jewellery behind le meridien hotel which offers modern design pearls with quality products.

As a local, let me share my input about this place - It's VERY heavily dependent on tourists - locals hardly (if ever) go there, except for a snack if they're in the area. Unfortunately the area is considered rather unsafe, but it's not some dark, crime-filled area - just be aware of pickpockets and you'll be fine.

That said, it is a really nice place to explore if you're not familiar to this kind of markets. The selection of souvenirs is quite good - although the items sold are similar it's a great place to pick up gifts. You need to be really good at bargaining tho. They will charge you a lot if you are very visibly a tourist. When I went there to purchase something, I got the item for less than half the price on the price-tag. Sad but true.

If you're not interested in buying souvenirs, I would definitely highly recomment trying out the food, especially the pandan coconut!!! It's something that would lure me to go back regularly. The pandan coconuts are the best, and sitting by the stalls sipping cool delicious coconut would make a great experience, I think. It's tasty and reasonably priced.

Overall, a pretty good place to visit if you've never been to. It's a huge advantage to have a local go with you!

I loved to walk around through the market =) People sell nearly the same all the time but I found many souvenirs there and when we were back in Kuala Lumpur I was a little bit sorry that I didn't buy more because the prices were cheaper and the selection bigger.

We pass this market after finish our dinner at the Portview Seafood. it's exactly beside the restaurant, just walking at this market, you can see it all selling fruits, snacks, seafood, everything that you want to eat is selling at this place. The one attract us is fried spicy chicken wing that hanging (displaying) for sell, as i look, that is a delicious meals but i doubt for the hygiene.
Conclusions is this market is the central market for Kinabalu, so famous amongs the tourist, cheap price, lack of hygiene, seaview from this market (different with any other market you see at Kinabalu), watch your step and becareful with your belongings.

It is what it is. A market run by immigrants. Don't expect 4 star standards. Expect to smell & see disgusting stuff everywhere & lots of people crammed into a tight space. Although this place is generally safe & there are policemen stationed just outside the market... Mind your pockets!
Having lots of people there is a sign that there is a silver lining to this unhygienic place. Walk around & look at the fresh fish on display. Watch the Filipinos & observe how they are different from the locals. Listen to their language & their price declarations. There are bargains to be found here.
You may try the food here if you are brave. Most of it is generally safe. However, be sure to observe the stall first. One can rarely go wrong with a popular stall. Avoid stalls with questionable practices or dirty attendants.
You can also find various biscuits & snacks unique to KK. I got loads of curry flavoured 'Angry Bird' & 'Kuih Cincin' for my friends & relatives. There were plenty of other stuff but these were the most popular ones. Be sure to haggle at least RM5 off every item! Plus plus if you've got a Sabahan with you. Bulih bah kalau kau!
KK is also famous for sea pearls & fresh water pearls. You can find quality jewellery cheap here. Prices are RM25 onwards. Be sure to haggle at least RM5 off each item. More if you're buying lots like me. Though I found that the Night Market has better prices for BOTH pearl jewellery & souvenirs.
