Owner description: Kota Kinabalu City Bird Sanctuary or KKCBS is a haven for wildlife right in the heart of the city. This 24-hectare patch of mangrove forest is the only remaining patch of an extensive mangrove forest that once existed around the coastal town of Kota Kinabalu.

I finally found this place after taking a city bus on a Monday morning. The opening hours are 8am to 6pm, but closed on Monday. But I noticed the gate was unlocked so let myself in and walked around a bit. It has a park-like feel with lots of big trees and of course the marshy area. Lots of birds about. You can easily walk back to downtown KK by turning left at the exit and walking up the hill. Just keep following the road and after about 2 miles you're in downtown Kota Kinabalu. It's a nice walk.

I went to the bird sanctuary, now called the wetland centre today. I went at 11am and it really was the wrong time of day to go. There were loads of mud crabs and lizards, and a fair few birds here and there, but dawn and dusk are the times to be there to really see the birds.

As the last reviewer said it does seem a million miles away from civilisation (except someone started cutting their grass when I was entering!) but in reality is it just 15 mins from the centre of town. It claims to be accessible to wheelchair users but there are certainly parts of the attraction with steps. That said I would say you would be able to access 3/4 of the areas without using steps. The planks have around a 1-2cm gap between them and are a little uneven, I would say at worst 1-2cm difference between planks.

There is still no real shop, nowhere to buy water or a snack and a small table of souvenirs.

I enjoyed seeing the crabs and lizards. There were several egrets, kingfishers and other birds I did not recognize. The whole time I was there (2 hours) I saw 4 other people.

If you have never been to a mangrove swamp then its well worth a visit. Even if you have the bird life is beautiful and its well worth the entry price (10 ringet at the time of writing). What was disappointing was the sheer volume of rubbish in the water, attached to the mangroves and just about everywhere. It was sad and disappointing, partly because it just looks horrible and partly because of the damage some of the rubbish can do to the wildlife.

Took my family to the wetland last May 08. Was surprised to find a wetland in the middle of Kota Kinabalu town. Step in side the park and you'll think you've been transported out of a town.

The park is about 10-20 minutes from KK town. Its quite a pleasant walk as the mangrove trees cover a good part of the wooden walkway. We even managed to push a stroller around the whole route although some parts were a bit tricky.

The visitor centre is nothing to shout about and there are no drinks, souveniers etc to buy. It would good to come prepared with some drinking water.

It was a bit disappointing not to see a lot of wild life although we did spot a couple of birds. The mud skippers were a real treat for my children who have spent their entire lives thus far in the city.

Parts of the walk are a bit muddy so, do be prepared to get a bit dirty but all in all its quite a nice stroll in a park.

There is also a tower which provides a nice view of the park. Good for a couple of hours and quite educational for the children.
