They have a nice common area and the services are friendly, however there are tons of bed bugs! They moved me to another bed for the night, and THAT bed also had bugs. I couldn't sleep and went to the common room, three people came down complaining about bugs, and they were in different rooms! I'm sure they know about the bugs but they keep checking people in. About to go back and demand a refund...they better.

This hostel is nicely located in Jalan Gaya, where you have the big street market on Sundays. If you arrive on a Sunday; have fun finding it. It took us almost an hour.
The hostel has a really nice common area where you can help yourself to some breakfast in the morning. Just toast with jam or noodles, but with coffee :D. Or watch TV, read one of the magazines or just hang out with fellow travellers.
Our room was pretty huge, simple, clean and nice. Nothing to rave about but decent for a hostel.
Shared bathroom and showers were pretty clean, not really new but still in a good shape.
Wifi worked fine in our room, even though we were on the top floor.
All in all one of our better hostel experiences.

Walking distance to the jetty, shopping complex, market. The bed is old but overall cleaniness is there. 2 toilets & 2 bathrooms per flloor with around 4 - 6 rooms per floor. Lobby is comfortable. Not much complaint on it as the price is cheap.

This place is okay. Most of the rooms lack windows, but that's standard enough in hostels, and the beds are comfortable. The smoking area is right beside the shower rooms and clothes drying area, which is unpleasant. There are two computers available for use, but at least one of them was always broken. There's a TV and DVDs, but no social vibe or atmosphere to speak of. Perfect if you're looking for some quiet time though. It's clean and the staff are friendly but a little bit distant.
Good location in the city centre.

We stayed around 5 days at Akinabalu Guesthouse and we felt like home. The staff was very friendly and helpfull. The rooms were clean with aircon and fan. The showers and toiletts were clean as well and there were enough for all. We really liked to stay in this place and its exactly the same price as all guesthouses down the street. Before we came to this one we were in another one, it was terrible compared to Akinabalu. The living area is very nice, comfortable and welcoming. I would absolutly go back to this place!

The five of us stayed at Akinabalu. We were very luck, we walked up without a booking, but for the next few days watched quite a few people being turned away because the place was full.

It is located very centrally in KK. It is only a short walk to most of the attractions of central KK.

The facilities are good: free internet (although it can be very slow) and wifi. The rooms are clean with air-con. They only have windows opening into the hallway, but the place is set up very well with cross-ventilation in the main areas so the air is fresh. One issue: the bunks are really, really squeaky. There is a basic breakfast supplied, noodles and toast.

The staff are super-helpful. We got some great discounts on ferries to the islands and tours. There is a room for luggage storage if you head off on an overnight stay, and lockable storage for valuables (byo lock). They were happy to book taxis for us, and advise us how to get around.

On Sunday mornings the Gaya street market is literally at the door: a huge and varied market with everything from produce to food to touristy geegaws.

Some reviewers have mentioned bedbugs: we had no such problems.

Akinabalu offers everyone you would expect from a hostel. Good location, reasonable price dorms 20RM fan/25RM air con, free wifi, 2 computer stations, a chill out area perfect to meet other travellers.......however I got bitten by bedbugs (feet/arms/back) which was unpleasant and very itchy! The rooms are clean and fresh linen is provided however these little buggers live in cracks in the walls and the mattresses. If you do stay, spray your bed and sleep in a sleeping bag liner. If you get bitten you could always ask to move rooms and chance another bed? There are lots of budget options nearby so you could just checkout!
