This was a most wonderful location. The lodge staff were most helpful and pleasant. Our guide Mesius was excellent and spotted many wild orang-utans and red leaf monkeys. It is certainly a place to visit if you are in Sabbah

Danum Valley is one of the most exciting place i ever seen in my life. The nature is massive, the feeling was just indescribable. This is a primary forest in the state of Sabah (Malaysian Borneo), and you can see the difference compare to other surrounding place like Tabin Reserve and so on. We have spotted lots of wildlife here, gibbons, wild orangutans, bornean elephants and many other amazing creatures.
Staying in Danum Valley at Borneo Rainforest Lodge is not cheap, but is worth it. The lodge itself is fabolous; the staff is friendly and very prosessional. 5 stars service for sure. I recommend to all tripadvisor member to get there for an unforgettable experience. Danum is a MUST see destination before you die!

Firstly, Danum Valley rainforest is spectacular. The dense forest can be hard to spot wildlife at times, but it is possible to see a wide variety of animals with a bit of planning or luck. There are too many animals to name but a few of the stars are: Orangutans, gibbons, several species of monkey, clouded leopards, pygmy elephants, hornbills & other amazing birds.

You have two options for accommodation in Danum Valley: The Borneo Rainforest Lodge (BRL) or the Field Centre.

I stayed at the Field Centre due to being unable to afford the BRL. The Field Centre had a lot of negatives for service and organisation but the surrounding forest area was still amazing. The Field Centre is mainly for scientific research and not officially for tourists but they do let them/us in, but they then don't offer much help as they stand on the 'not for tourist' line. I have written a full review on the appropriate tripadvisor page for the Centre so I won't repeat it all here.

I have read reviews for the BRL and it seems to get good scores. My advice would be to read reviews on both options and also weigh between:

BRL - Significantly higher cost but better tourist experience (guides / service / food etc.)

Field Centre - Lower cost (still not cheap however) which could result in a longer stay in the forest area… but no tourist service (i.e. the guides just accompany you, offering little information & staff really don’t aim to please etc.)

Whatever you do, the rainforest is brilliant and a must-do in Borneo.

Danum Valley is situated in Sabbah, Malaysia. There is a rain forest where one can hike, see wild life such as orangutans, gibbons, chemaleons etc. The only accommodation is inside the rain forest, The Danum Valley Lodge. Accommodation there is full board. Activities are organized by the lodge, they also provide guides who are knowledgeable & helpful. Cabins in the lodge are basic but pretty comfortable. The meals are excellent. The Valley is less than an hour's flight from Kota Kinabalu. One is met at the airport, taken to the wild life centre, given an introduction of the forest & then taken to the valley through a 1.5 hours drive. Some may think the cost is expensive, but taken into account how the forest is conserved, constructing & maintaining the lodge, the standard of hygiene & food, it's actually reasonable. The usual stay there is 2-3 nights.

This is very expensive but still manages to be good value for money. It is a sureal experience to be housed in luxury in the middle of the rainforest with no other habitation for miles. The staff were brillient and very kind and helpful. The rainforest walks, wether accompanied or not let you know what real primary rainforest is like. We did nearly all our walks with our guide,Theo, since he was very well informed and knew where the intersting wild life was hanging out. We finally managed to meet up with a herd of pigmy elephants as we were going back to the airport. They just walked aroung in the track (can't call it a road) and foraged on the sides for such a long time I started to worry about missing the plane. Danum Valley is a must. If you don't want to pay the 5 star prices at the Rainforest Lodge there is a very much cheaper lodge at the administrative centre. You don't get the same quality of guide but you still get the original experience since the rainforest is the same.
