“Great value for money”
Reviewed March 15, 2010

Would definitely recommend this hotel. We stayed here for four nights and were really happy with our stay. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The hotel is in a good location. It's within walking distance to the main shopping area Komtar and all the main sights in Georgetown. (Be sure to ask for a map and a bus timetable upon arrival as it proves to be very helpful)

The room is a really good size. There's air conditioning, TV, large fridge and a bath/shower. The bed is really comfortable as are the pillows! It's a really quiet hotel so there's no problem in getting a good nights sleep. There was a slight musty smell in our room though but once we opened the windows for a few minutes the air cleared.

The hotel supplied very fast free WIFI. We had breakfast included and it was really good. It served until 11am. It's self service with tea, coffee, choice of four juices, toast, cereal, fruit. You can also order eggs and chicken sausages for only RM3 and RM5 respectively.

Room service was great and very prompt. Also there's a cafe across the road (Louis' Cafe) which serves Western Food and you can order delivery from this cafe through the hotel. We didn't avail of the delivery option but we did visit the restaurant and the food was lovely.

Overall a good hotel particularly for the price.

Spent 3 nights at the Mingood and had no real complaints. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms were decent - good value for $100 RM/night. Free wifi in the rooms and an elevator were added bonuses. No real food onsite - though cold breakfast was included in the morning. Good location to explore the city. Great substitue to guesthouses based on the reviews I've read. The staff really make this place worth a repeat visit.

This is a great, slightly tatty budget hotel. The aircon can be a little rattly and the sheets/covers/towels are sometimes threadbare, but the fact is that the hotel is clean, efficient and unpretentious, and good value for the price. Corridors and bathrooms don't have aircon. Our twin room was very spacious (as were other rooms we peeked into), with wardrobe and TV, mini-desk and corner chair, plus en-suite bathroom. There's a meagre breakfast offering (free) in the roof-top bar, and free wi-fi on every floor. In the lobby there are a number of internet PCs (timed charge). Staff are reasonably helpful. The rooms weren't particularly noisy, but if the hotel is busy I would imagine a fair bit of corridor noise.

Discounted rates shown on their website are worth it!

Note that the kopitiam across the road ("NICE") mentioned by previous reviewers has shut down after a change of owners.

We were here for two nights and really enjoyed it, felt really welcome. It is clean and the staff atre very friendly and keen to help out. Two minute walk from a great Indian restaurant, Breakast on the roof terrace...we lost our camera and they could not do enough to help us to find it and the lady at breakfast is lovely- wonderful smile! All in all, i would recommend this place to anyone.

This is a good budget hotel. It has everything a budget traveler could need (clean rooms, internet/wifi, a good location, helpful staff, etc). However, this is not a luxury hotel. For people that are looking for something luxurious in Penang, this is not it. Given its location (a 5 minute walk from the heart of the city) and that Georgetown, Penang is a real city that also has tourists it is a decent value (we were happy to get a room for $35 during Chinese New Year when everything else was full), but certainly not an outstanding deal. If you're looking for a place to stay for a couple of days when traveling then it is for you; if you're looking for a luxury escape then look elsewhere. The staff here are exceptionally helpful and can arrange onward routes and tours for the independent traveler.

We booked this a few hours before we arrived via Agoda and were pleasantly surprised.

The hotel itself reminds me of the film The Shining, old building, high ceilings and a radio button next to the bed but it also comes with a bath (which was clean) and free wifi in your room and breakfast.

We stayed in a twin room with ensuite bathroom. The bedroom/bathroom was basic, old fashioned but clean and we were thrilled to find we had a bath, very welcome after a month in Thailand!

Breakfast is fine too, coffee/juice/toast/cereal and fruit.

The hotel also has 4 computers in the lobby area and a communal eating area on the top floor where you can buy a beer or have a game of pool.

All in all good value and I would stay again.

Really good value! We stayed 2 nights and were impressed with the spacious and clean rooms with ensuite bathrooms. The breakfasts were included each morning. Aircon worked well. The staff were helpful and gave us directions to places such as Penang Hill and the Butterfly farm. Drinking water was available in the lobby and we were able to put our passports into the safe at the reception.
It's close to public transport. The Rapid Penang buses were fantastic! We definately would go back - there's lots more to explore in Penang!
