Description: "Chez Nous", in French, means "at our place". We are a small Genuine Belgian cafe in the heart of Georgetown, probably the only truly Belgian restaurant in Malaysia. "Chez nous" is a home of great drinks (Exclusive Crafted Belgian beers and a lot more) , delicious home cooked food (Vintage French sardines, Freshly home made Belgian/French/Italian dishes, weekly imported French cheeses, ....). We serve "Moules-frites" (mussels and chips) with 48h prior reservations. Our small restaurant is often described as cozy, relax, casual and friendly. We take pride offering personalized service to our clients and we are still working the two of us to insure that. Our menus are limited with a selection of tasty dishes to insure quality and freshness and are changed every Friday. Operation hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from 6pm to 10:30pm for dinner (kitchen closes at 9:30pm). We only accept cash payment and are sorry for any possible inconvenience. It is best to reserve your table. Bienvenue "Chez Nous"!

We went for a short trip to Penang last Wednesday. We loved the atmosphere, the service and the food. Don't miss Vintage sardines and sausages. Wish we have more restaurant like that in KL. A must try if you go to Penang.

My girlfriend and I arrived late in Penang on a Friday night and, unlike our normal MO, we hadn't really done our homework... No problem though - just fire up Tripadvisor on the iPhone and you have all the options at your fingertips!

Even though we were staying on the mainland, Chez Nous came up second on the top 50 list in our vicinity, so we thought we'd drive across the bridge and check it out.

We were lucky, as the traffic was a nightmare, and we arrived just in time for last orders in the restaurant (usually somewhere between 9:30 and 10pm). We were greeted by Philippe who assured us that it was no problem for us to sit down and order.

The restaurant is owned by Philippe and his wife Liz, and although we didn't get to meet Liz (she was in the kitchen), Philippe made us very welcome.

As other reviewers have stated, the menu is very small, but this is actually a very nice touch! I'm genuinely sick of going to restaurants in SE Asia that profess to offer "everything", but are actually even remotely competent at producing anything worth eating. The small menu at Chez Nous means that everything is excellent, and extremely well cooked.

As a Belgian restaurant, what else where we to try but the authentic Belgian dishes on the menu. Both were very good, and very filling! We had planned to have the cheese platter to round things off, but we'd eaten so much, we couldn't fit it in!

The decor and ambiance of the restaurant is in keeping with other traditional restaurants in the area, with and arty twist - we liked it very much!

We had planned to go back and tackle the cheese board the next day, but unfortunately no one picked up when we called to make a reservation (as we were told to do, because Saturday's get very busy apparently), so we thought rather than risk it, we'd go to another restaurant we'd been recommended round the corner.

Overall, the reception, food, decor and ambiance were great at Chez Nous, and I'm very much looking forward to going back there when we next head north to Penang.

Dear Nick,

Thank you very much for your extensive and comprehensive review and , mostly, for coming for dinner "Chez Nous". Liz and I are glad that you have enjoyed our food and service.

Sincere apologies now regarding Saturday. Liz was busy in the kitchen and she did not hear your call and when she saw the miss call , it was too late. Maybe you could have tried my cell phone or our land line. Sorry about that. we would have loved to welcome you for the cheese platter.

We hope to have the great pleasure welcoming you when you will come back to Penang.

Excellent day and week.

Philippe

We had our dinner there in June and it was a wonderful "displaced" experience!

Parking lots were scarce so we parked some distance away and we took a short walk to the restaurant. The evening was pleasant, and we walked down a typical old Georgetown "street", that is barely wide enough to fit a large SUV. Flanked by old prewar houses, we walked down the quiet street almost back into time, when Penang was a colonial city. We were greeted by Philippe, the owner, at the door of the restaurant. A very friendly greeting and we were in welcomed into "the home".

Chez Nous Cafe is a small restaurant, of about 6 tables, housed in an old prewar building with narrow but long hall. The walls of the building were decorated with lovely photos and artwork created by the owners themselves and gave a feel of a lived in hall. As hilited elsewhere, Philippe was warm and very hospitable, and we felt welcomed, giving us the feeling of what it might have been in a home some years back in the "old Penang".

Having settled down firmly in an "old Asian" restaurant context, we were wondering about the "Belgian-ness" of this restaurant. That was very quickly displaced by the wonderful Belgian beers, best we have had outside of Europe. And then, there was the food! Very home-style, the mushroom truffle soup and meatballs entree was authentic and very tasty. It was light, and wasn't as heavy as some cooking could be. By mid course, we forgot we were in Penang, especially after a few Belgian beers! Dessert was nice with the ice-cream drizzled with whiskey and topped off with a belgian chocolate. Yum!

All in all, the food was great, the hospitality fantastic, and the experience of having very nice Belgian food in a "traditional Penang home" in the heart of "old Penang", is a very unique experience. One would think there would be a clash of cultures in this juxtaposition, but Philippe and Liz have made it work in an interesting harmony.

If one is weary for a bit, of the local street food, and hankering after some "different" food, try this restaurant - it is a unique contrast and an interesting experience, aside from the good food (and very nice beers!)

My wife and I had a really nice evening at Chez Nous. Top-quality Belgian cooking, real cheese and proper Belgian beer.
The owners are charming and interesting to talk to, and they go out of their way to be helpful, especially regarding other restaurant advice.
The cafe's brightly and originally decorated, including the owners own photographs of local scenes, and it's spotless. It's worth pointing out that, contrary to what some web resources still say, they are currently open every day, but only for supper.
Thoroughly recommended as an original choice in historic Georgetown.

Small and intimate, dedicated to serving a few clients good food at a very reasonable price. The owner couldn't do enough to welcome you and ensure you have a great meal. Nothing else in Penang comes close!
