“See it without the guide”
Reviewed January 7, 2013 via mobile

A lot of cultural heritage here, but we had to wait for the guided tour which was crowded, difficult to hear and, i am sorry to say, boring. The tour guide, although personable, talked for 20 minutes before we even left the entrance hall, once through to the open courtyard, she spoke again for 15 minutes about water drainage and feng shui ! We snook off and saw the other rooms ourselves which we should have done in the first place.
In all honesty, there are better, more informative mansions to see in Georgetown, give this one a miss!

“Lovely and interesting”

I really enjoyed the tour of the house. It's beautiful, old, and full of interesting history. The guide we had was fantastic (and hilarious). Stick around after the tour and have a glass of wine in the courtyard for a bit of pleasant relaxation.

“Complete waste of time”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

You can only tour the house with a tour guide and the tours are only three or four times a day, so this means large groups and very hard to,hear the guide.

The guide we had spent so much of her time talking about the family prior to their arrival in Penang and very little about the property itself. We left the 1hour tour after 20 mins.

Incidentally, the vast majority of the property is now run as a hotel and is off limits to the tour, leaving only six rooms to see which have very little furnishings or anything else to see in them.

How this became a UNESCO listed property defies belief,
