“Khoo Kongsi - Worth seeing”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

I was impressed wit the work that went into building this monument.

It was amazing to see the on-going legacy of the Khoo's today and how they are helping members of the Khoo family all over the world realize their dreams..

“History”
Reviewed October 8, 2013

Get to know more about what the ancestors do and where they stay or do. It tells you what happened to this clan and what most of them do like their occupation. The structure for the house is truly amazing though

“Great place”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

Fantastic attraction for a reasonable price. Very well looked after and the museum provides a lot of insight into both Penang and the family the Khoo Kongsi is in honour of. Well worth a visit.

“A hidden Surprise”
Reviewed October 2, 2013

An amazing Chinese Clanhouse. Incredible decorated and well worth the A$5.00 entry fee. Spoilt by allowing vehicles to drive into and park on the forecourt. The visit could be improved by offering visitors an explanatory pamphlet of various icons within the center, instead of a very basic flyer.

“One of the most impressive clan houses in South East Asia”
Reviewed September 30, 2013

Khoo Kongsi is located at Cannon square off Lebuh Cannon. You might miss it the first time as it is hidden from Lebuh Cannon street. Look out for a huge wooden door entrance instead. I read that you have to pay for entrance fee however we were in Penang during Georgetown festival therefore most places of interest actually waive off the entrance fees.

The existence of a Kongsi is meant to act as a congregation place, like a clan house for immigrants with the same surname to worship their ancestors. With time the functions of a Kongsi evolve into more supportive roles like settling disputes, helping members from the same community, business networking or even philanthropy work. There are many differences in the architecture of the different clan house. The well crafted ones are usually done by the community who are more prominent and well-off during the period of time in Penang and it is also a way to showcase their success.

Khoo Kongsi was one of the biggest clan in Penang and craftsmen were brought from China to construct and build the clan hall. The richly decorated clan house was constructed 650 years ago and was considered one of the most impressive clan houses in the South East Asia region.

An impressive ancient architecture with interesting history which you must visit if you are in Penang.
