A lovely large mansion which has been renovated and given a wonderful white makeover. From the reception, to the whisky lounge, to the cafe and to the bar, it is all beautifully done and there is a great ambience.
We didn't go to dine but had a couple of bottles of delicious wine, and some extremely tasty and well presented bar snacks in a very snazzy bar setting. Great. And wonderful service from the very friendly and attentive staff.
Definitely a place to visit - especially if somone is staying in Geogretown itself since MM is easy to get to along Jalan Macallister.

this is a new place in georgetown which has all of the following :-

01. a cafe which has a limited local menu and great looking cakes + deserts
02. the Bagan Bar which used to be somewhat of an institution back in the day which has a live band on certain nights
03. a whiskey and cigar bar, which have a fine collection of malts .
04. a fine dinning french restaurant style restaurant which does an interesting digestion menu with or with out wine paring
05. an outside pool bar
06. very chic accommodation of 8 rooms upstairs which are designed very well . Kudos to the designer

we had a great evening there, there was a themed night happening at the began bar with all the staff dressed as school kids, we had some finger food , which was nothing to write home about.

the owners have spent serious money on the interior design and the restoration of the old mansion that it is housed in.

definitely a must do in Penang !!

We chose the hotel because a family member who lives in Penang and has an exquisite taste for the best things in life highly recommended that we stayed there.

We are a family with one child from HK, and what a pleasant surprise when we saw this brand new designer hotel and significant investments that have put into the 8 rooms they have and other decoration and facilities! High ceiling, latest B&O hi-fi, latest samsung TV, transparent huge bathroom with electrical curtain, authenticated european designer decorations, a small exercise room with treadmill / sky-walker, and a nice size swimming pool, to name a few.

We only tried breakfasts at the hotel and they were delicious (although we still preferred the local food). The adult also tried the cigar room where unusually, they had some of the best selections of whisky money could buy.

Staff were very friendly and thoughtful. We checked out at 530am so they put together a nicely prepared, packed breakfast takeaway. Their attention to detail for the service could be due to the fact that the hotel was brand new, but it was a good starting point.

Location is in the middle of the city so there was no sea view. But the hotel was so beautiful and comfortable we ended up not bothering to go outside too often which, ironically defeated the purpose of our visit to Penang, for a reason we were very happy with!

They obviously spent a lot of money doing up this fantastic waterside old mansion but I am not sure where they got their inspiration for the interiors. it could be a nightclub from the disco era, it could be someone fantasy of a Chinese brothel, it could be someone with too many design books who stuck in every idea.
The net result is frightening which is a really pity as the location, building and the spaces are amazing.
What in its heyday must have been a grand entrance is now a very dower car park.
The drinks in the bar are good ever if the bar tenders knowledge of drinks is scant. An old style drink list to match the style of the building might help.
An interesting addition to Penang and a least an old building has been saved. It just a pity that that they got it so wrong on the inside. Its Mansion Mutilation!!!!!

Macalister Mansion is NOT a waterfront mansion. We are located in the city of Georgetown. Not sure what is meant by mansion mutilation as Macalister Mansion is the ONLY hotel in Malaysia to make the cut and be part of Design Hotels.

Would it be possible that Macalister Mansion is confused with another property? After all, there are many other colonial buildings in Penang.
