“Don't miss this if you are in Penang!”
Reviewed January 14, 2013

Interested to see a Hindu Temple with panoramic view on a hilltop? Don't mind walking uphill for, say, 20mins? Try this temple.

[Especially, coming 26~28Jan is Thaipusam festival. It will be grand, lively, crowded fiesta with a lot to see]

The name is Balatandayuthabani Temple. Basically that means temple for young Lord Muruga. Also called Tannirmalai (waterfall) temple. Just on the outskirts of the city. Mention the name to any taxi driver.

It is a hill-top temple. Access is via a long staircase that skirts the hill side, but not very steep. A different staircase to go down, so, take note if travelling in a group. The temple itself is of 2 levels, with the new, more attractive wing, a bit higher up.

Shoes allowed till reach the top. Only need take off when entering the temple itself. Advised to be decently dressed if entering.Otherwise, no rules. Enjoy the long hike up and the view along the way. Good for many photoshoots. Make it early morning or late evening to avoid the hot sun. Or, sweat it out mid-day if you like.

If happen to be there at prayer times (morning 6~8am, evenings 7~9pm), can see the prayer ceremonies and get the blessings. You may want to drop in a few ringgits into the undiyal (money-box), if so inclined.

[Note: During Thaipusam festival, traffic will be closed some distance from the main entrance, so, expect longer walk. Also carefull if bringing kids through the crowd]

“Gorgeous!”
Reviewed September 8, 2012

Wow! Truly beautiful newly renovated Hindu temple.
Caution: You must be reasonably fit to enjoy this place. Otherwise just few snapshots of the temple and you can visit the Vinayagar (Elephant God)Temple downstairs only. Also, do not forget to remove your should before getting in. Socks is alright. Again, it would be nice to have a guide who is well verse in Hindu religion & Indian culture to explain to you. Otherwise, it is just a well ornate religious institution. But Truly Awesome!
