“Nice place not alot of good option”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

We had heard china house is the place to be in Penang supposedly with a wide variety of food a live band and a nice atmosphere. We got there greeted by a friendly face and shown to a seat with butchers paper on the table and coloring crayons to get creative with which we loved! Then the menu came out 9 pages of alcoholic drink selection which was nice and half a page of food option. The menu was all western/European food which isn't really what we were after. We didnt actually eat here as it just wasn't appealing. But the drinks were good :)

“Very bad service”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014 via mobile

The 1st restaurant we visited in Penang is China house, it's a very bad experience for us! When we walked in, there's no one attend to us, we were standing like fool and the waitress was not helpful and I should say she is rude! Really ruin my first day in Penang, hate it! But too be honest, the food is ok!

“Sophisticated Food in a Fun Atmosphere”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 25, 2014

There seems to be some confusion in the reviews of the China House. China House is made up of several venues. There is a restaurant, café with a bakery, a small bar next to the “reading room,” and, through a courtyard, a large bar that has live music on weekends. There are upstairs rooms for art shows and special events.

This is review of the restaurant. It was wonderful. We had some best food that we had on our recent travels in Asia.

When you enter China House you get to the restaurant by walking through part of the café (be sure to take a look at the deserts on display) and turn left to the restaurant.

Portions are not large, prices are a bit high, but we went back a second time because it was sophisticated food in a fun atmosphere, a rare combination.

During our first visit we had tomato lime coconut soup, and scallops with asparagus as appetizers. For mains we the roasted chicken with a tomato, coriander and pistachios salad and rocket, and a sea bass with cauliflower puree, roasted pumpkin and a pine nut and pomegranate dressing. We shared a meringue lemon cream and chocolate cake. Everything was excellent.

The service was very good and the staff very friendly.

And if you are caught, as we were, in a downpour, the small bar by the reading room is a perfect place to spend time waiting for the rain to end or you can dash through the courtyard to the larger bar.

“Best bananabread i ever had”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

Located in a very nice traditional house this restaurant must have the most choice of cakes. Their menu is divers and the food the served was really good. Loved their toasted bananabread. The staff was very friendly and service good for local standards.

“Place for hipster”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

This is a place for the hipster. Impressed with its the design and decorations for the restaurant but the most is the place usually packed with a large amount of hot chicks. The last section of the restaurant is where they locate the stage for the live band. Good place for chill.
