“Nice Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 1, 2013

Nice Hotel in the middle of busy city of Georgetown! We love it!!

We stayed here 3D/2N with my family, and we think it a nicely decorated hotel and peaceful.

GOOD
1. Hotel was in the middle of town but yet you still feel like you are not :)
2. Nice room - Retro old style of Baba and Nyonya setting
3. Our room just in front of the swimming pool - kids love it!
4. Friendly staff and very helpful
5. Nice simple breakfast - With local Asian foods they will change everyday.
6. I was impress with the decoration of this hotel and room.

NEED IMPROVEMENT / MY SUGGESTION
1. No Fridge - Need some small fridge in the room.
2. Only serve foods for breakfast - Suggestion to serve some foods for lunch and dinner
simple one will do.
3. Need a phone in the room :) - I personally think should have that
4. Wifi connectivity need some improvement - signal was not good in our room.
5. Need to have some complimentary coffee or tea in the room.

Overall it was a good stay for us, and recommend this hotel for couple and family.

Next time would love to try their other hotel, Noordin Mews.

The first half of our trip to Penang was for business, but we have decided to try a different lodging rather than the usual business hotel - and we were extremely happy and satisfied with the decision.

Noordin Mews is indeed the hidden gem of Penang. We read somewhere it is actually the sister property of Muntri Mews which many would have heard of. It was not difficult to find, though we were a little uncertain at first whether we were on the right street, even for local like us. It is situated among some very run down old shops in a quiet little street with dimmed lights.

We were pleasantly surprised the moment we walked into Noordin Mews - the former home to trishaw workers in old days was converted to modern stay with a nice vintage touch. We were given a room on level 1 so there was not much issues with noise (we are neither light sleepers). Room was spacious, clean and comfortable. We loved the lavender body shampoo that was provided in the room. Staff was amazing - almost everyone that we met had a smile and was polite to make you feel like home. Though there was not a lot of choices for breakfast, we were fairly happy. Tried both the western and oriental meal and they were delicious.

We also particularly like the fact there aren't too many rooms, probably around 20 of them in total. Cosy size yet private and secluded enough. We would recommend Noordin Mews for those wanting something different from typical hotels and truly Penang.

Room Tip: Parking is easy, Noordin Mews has 2 reserved lots. Otherwise, there is plenty of road side parking...

Not the easiest place to find but well worth it. This is one for today's so called flashpacker! Rooms are gorgeous, clean and very comfortable. Service is top notch and friendly. Easy access to Georgetown and they'll direct you to all the great places to enjoy Penangs famous food. So wish there was more of this sort of accommodation. Very Recommended!

We loved Noordin Mews. We have travelled the world extensively and found he friendliness and hospitality not equalled elsewhere. The staff were simply amazing.

After our initial shock from walking from the ferry with luggage on streets with no footpaths, we arrived in a fairly run down street and at first did not want to stay. Our fears were soon put to rest when we walked into the lobby of this lovely hotel. It was like an oasis in a crazy, busy little town.

Superb renovation, with stunning vintage touches, These shop houses have been restored with such lovely detail and touches. I was so impressed with the tiny details. The interior was simply stunning. Lovely areas to sit and relax, either by the pool, near the kitchen area and lovely leather lounges. Drinks are served all day for a very low rate and the cocktails are yum!

The staff are smiling, friendly and helpful. You are greeted with chilled water after being outside in the heat, and there is a lovely turn down service at night, with the special touch of orchids left on your pillow.

The rooms are cool and spacious. I would love to have had a fridge though, especially in the heat. Although the location is not in the middle of the tourist area, but in a working street - you feel part of Georgetown, you feel like a local almost. You get to see the real Georgetown, not just as a tourist. I think this is one of the reasons why we fell in love with the hotel and Georgetown itself.

The only minuses are the noise. I would stay away from ground level around the pool. Also the doors, although lovely to have original big bolts, they are extremely noisy at night when people are arriving back late. Also the kitchen in the central area, starts setting up at 5.30am so you are woken up with the sound of plates clanging and banging. Also outside lighting is kept on all night so the rooms are very light at night.

As I loved it here so much, next time I would just bring ear plugs and a good block out mask.

Everything else makes these things seem like minor quibbles.

Stay here, you will love it!!

Just completed 7 days staying at the Noordin Mews over the xmas period. Can not say enough about this place: the staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome, with cool water on arrival every day, turn down every night and lots of local information and smiles. The rooms are large, with gorgeous retro decor. Jumping in the pool after a day out in the heat is perfect, and having a breakfast with great choices was always great. Coffee is fabulous too! (as a fussy Australian, bad coffee is close to unforgivable). Thankyou to Baby, Chona, Jason, Rommhel and all the other staff for making our trip to Penang comfortable and memorable. Will be recommending to everyone we know heading over there!

Room Tip: ask for one at the back, or even just 3 back from Noordin St: the hotel is directly opposite a newsp...

Noordin Mews is among the new boutique hotels in Penang (if not the newest). We decided to stay here for 3 nights because of the overall excellent reviews and its strategic location. All in all, it proved to be a very good choice. The tastful decoration has been mentioned elsewhere; staff was very welcoming - we left with impression that they wanted to see their guests being comfortable (i.e. whenever we were sitting in the common area reading - the hotel provides newspapers, travel guides and several copies of the magazine "Timeout Penang" -, water has been offered, after returning to our room we found lights and aircondition being switched as well as the bed made for the second time that day). The hotel's location in walking distance to KOMTAR with easy access to the island's bus network also comes very handy.

Some (minor) downside aspects: Wifi was quite weak in our room due to the distance to the lobby, as the rooms face the pool it can get a bit noisy. Breakfast was tasty but limited in quantity and took a while when ordered at a time when every one else was having breakfast, too.

Yet the overall experience was very delightful due to the nice decoration, the good service and the hotel's location - especially in the light if the reasonable price compaired to the more established boutique hotels of Georgetown.

Noordin Mews is designed intentionally to exude nostalgia for the past. The rooms are spiced with pictures of old Chinese movie stars, maybe a framed old cheong-sam dress from the 1950s, a display cabinet of powder, lighter, memorabilia from the bygone age. The furniture also appear to be from the olden days. The floor tiles (which are smooth and polished) are checked with designs of the art-deco era. The room is spacious, with a long relaxing lounge-sofa. The bed is actually a cement alcove with a mattress on top (I dont have any issues with that, and think it's neat). So ambience is all in Noordin Mews.

What may not be so positive are: (a) breakfast is very limited in range and quality. Although this property has 16 rooms (with high occupancy rate), the kitchen to cook breakfast is very small, so the food may take a while. And there is nothing to rave about. (b) Location-wise, Noordin Mews is near First Avenue shopping mall, Trader's Hotel & Komtar, all in old downtown Georgetown, Penang. But the street where Noordin Mews rests is not very charming at all: mechanic shops, small-scale industry runned by family businesses. There are no good restaurants here, and nightlife is dead in this neighborhood. You have to go out to other areas to enjoy night scene, but finding a cab requires booking from the hotel.

Walking on the streets in Penang is a constant challenge: many shop owners impose barriers on the side of their frontage like complete cement blockage, or motorcycles or pots of plants. So pedestrians cannot walk through peacefully, but are forced to zig-zag between shop pavement and street. Beware of traffic while you step out of the shop frontage. Near Noordin Mews, there are cars that double or triple park, so you have to walk in the middle of the road! There is no parking lot for those people driving from out-of-town to stay in Noordin Mews.
