“Some Hits and a Few Misses”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

SOME HITS:
On the overall, service here at Sunway Georgetown was pretty good, considering that it wasn't a five-star hotel and they were still undergoing renovation for certain parts of their facilities. Overall, we enjoyed our 2-night stay at Sunway Georgetown even though our little boy had fallen ill on the second day. The front office staff were able to offer prompt advice on the nearest hospital to take him to. Location-wise, it's within walking distance to Komtar and cabs are parked in front of the hotel waiting for guests. Sunway's room rate was not the cheapest among the hotels in Georgetown, but it was value-for-money considering its location and the relatively "new" condition of the guest rooms.
Although there were hawker stalls and coffee-shops a stone's throw away, we called for room service as we were exhausted after looking after our sick boy for the whole day. After ordering, the food was promptly served after 10 minutes of wait. Portions were large and tasty. We also enjoyed the powerful rain shower and the complimentary toiletries were not too bad.

A FEW MISSES:
However, on the first night, we only managed to sleep after midnight due to a live singing/karaoke event nearby. Luckily, there were no such event on the second night. In the room, we discovered that the bed-sheet was stained but we're cool as it was an old stain. The washbasin in the bathroom did not drain properly and after calling the maintenance guy, he found that the screw was missing. Well, for a newly-renovated room/bathroom, this seems rather unusual! The other peeve we had was they had run out of baby cots when we arrived.

FYI: We visited Penang for 22-23 Feb 2013.

Just turn right from the hotel and a one minute walk and you can buy the famous Lao Chu Zhong Traditional biscuit from a local famous biscuit shop right at the corner facing the main road. If you cross the main road, you will find the new PG Berjaya Time square where you can have lots of local food in a beautiful new complex. Walk down the road you see the local departmental store GAMA. Lots of stuff are at discount up to 70%. Out from the GAMA, you can cross the junction to the Komtar which can also link you to the new shoping mall of "1st Avenue". The most attracting thing is you will notice at night, the small road right in front of Sunway hotel suddenly changes into a vibrant lane with lots of hawker stalls selling all types of local food. Try anything you like as the price is so cheap and the taste is so delicious.

Room Tip: Don't bother to have breakfast in the hotel, plenty of food outside for you to choose.

The hotel is under renovation but when done will be even better. very good value (200 MYR) per night. Right near 1st ave mall and prangin mall. Great hawker stand beside hotel for clean decent local food. Service on check in and out was like a 5 star hotel. shame pool wasnt open due to the renovation.

Did not try the restaurants as local food nearby so cheap. 5 MYR for 6 satay, 5.5 MYR for kuay teow.

Definately wpuld recommend if u are on a budget and want a clean decent place to stay.

I stayed there one night. Hotel is located near centre of town, shopping mall, banks and restaurants. On the left side of hotel are many street food buffets. We start our one hour trip around town by cycle rickshaw in evening time. In front of hotel is live hindu temple. Swimming pool in hotel was renovated and it was no possibility to use it. I was very suprised by unknown bird which to held singing whole night.

I spent a night in this hotel. The room was excellent, due to newly renovated.

The hotel lobby is too simple, not like other hotels in penang which have bars or restaurants that serve welcome drinks.

During my stay, the hotel still under some renovation works, thus the noise and dust made a huge fuss to me. To make things worst, they still charge me premium price on my stay.

Buffet breakfast is awful. The dining environment is in the underground floor, which is spooky and smell mouldy.

For the price of rm 220 per night, one can have better choices in batu ferringhi.

I was on a business trip to Penang, check in around 8pm at night... opt for their so-called Promotion rate which is RM 200 per night.

This hotel is strategically located at New Lane, just outside the hotel there are rows of hawker food. Convenient store is also nearby within 200m.

When I was there the hotel was still under massive renovation, with the hotel rooms renovated, it was very clean and comfortable. The room I stayed was a Queen Size room on the smoking floor. Spacious with tv, drink bar, a refrigerator, and complimentary wifi. The bathroom was fully equipped with towel, toiletries.

Problem with their service... while checking in they didnt inform me that they still have drilling work to do. I was rudely woken up by the drilling sound on other floor as early as 9 am.

I called to the Front Desk and complain and they told me... if they not drill now, u expect them to drill at night? I mean, come on, i am expecting something more polite answer than said something like that. I just hope that the drilling part can be done at noon time as most of the guest have woke up or check out but not as early as 9am!!!

Really dissapointed with their attitude.

I think i will not come back to this hotel due to their bad service. Even before i check out, they called up to my room at 12 noon sharp and threaten me that they will charge additional RM 150 if i late for 1 minute. This is really ridiculous!!!

Pros: Clean new room and near to hawker centre on New Lane which is at just door step.

Cons: Bad service and noisy!

Was disappointed to find out that the renovation works will only end around mid year. The coffee house, lounge, swimming pool, gym are all closed during this period. So if you are looking for only a place to sleep at night it's ok. Otherwise, the isn't any place you can either relax, have a drink or exercise.
We were given a renovated room at the end of the floor, the housekeeping kept the big door next to our room opened and we were quite uncomfortable about it due to security reasons cuz we are all females. They forgot to deliver newspaper to our room and forgot to deliver to our room again when we reminded them before we went out.
Other than the above, the staff are quite friendly and service is good. Location is superb as its next to the hawkers street along macalister rd. Nearby there are lots of coffee shops, Penang times sq, local products shop and a big foot reflexology centre around e corner.
