Evergreen Laurel Hotel
Ranked #27 of 85 Hotels in George Town
Reviewed March 26, 2009

We stayed at the Evergreen Laurel over a 3-day weekend to visit Georgetown. The hotel is well constructed. Our room was a sea view. It was quite large; we didn't have any problems tripping over each other or finding a place to store things. The bathroom was also large and comfortable. The lobby is well laid-out and pleasant to be in; wireless internet is free. The staff was courteous. The location is not the best; it costs RM15 for a taxi to get to almost anywhere. Finally, don't bother paying extra for the sea view. At least in our room, condensation from the A/C made it difficult to see anything out the windows.

My most positive comment is reserved for the tour desk. They arranged a private car and driver for RM50/hour, with an English-speaking driver. We went to all the attractions we were interested in, and a few we didn't know about. The driver was helpful, taking us to the places we didn't know about, and waited without complaint. The cost was less than 2 tour bus tickets, and we saw more and in more comfort.

My most negative comment regards the restaurants. Our first night we were tired and decided to eat at the Chinese restaurant in the hotel. However, it was fully booked for a wedding, but this fact was not indicated anywhere in the hotel. Had we known, we could have eaten while out on our walk. When we discovered the problem it was raining very hard, so instead of walking out again we tried the coffee shop. Although the staff was pleasant, they could not get our order correct. In addition, the food was at best mediocre, with the onion soup downright not good. On the plus side, for the next night's dinner the concierge booked us a table at the May Garden restaurant, which was excellent and not overpriced.

Front desk was friendly and spoke English well. Room was clean & large even by American standards. Nicely appointed room with a nice desk and an LCD tv. I was on the 8th floor and the view was stunning!

The location was good, accross the street there was some enterntainment and fast food outlets, including my must have Starbucks! The hotel faces the sea/beach, but it is by no means a beach to suntan on. You'll have to travel 30mins at least from the hotel to get that type of setting. There was a large mall at the other of the street, within a 20 minute walk. Approximately, 30minute taxi ride from the airport.

Stay away from the bar if your looking for a cool beer. They charge in the area of $10/bottle!

Breakfast was always busy full of customers and was always very good. No complaints.

Would consider staying here again.

What a lovely place this hotel is.We were at this hotel for 3 nights and we could not fault it.Staff are excellent and very professional.Food including breakfast was very good.
The hotel location is fantastic in front of the seafront and very near to hawkers seafood restaurants and closeby is the shopping plaza called Guerney plaza.Shoppoholics paradise. This hotel also has a lovely swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna, steam room and complimaentary internet. in all rooms. What more would one ask.
Georgetown is a 15 ringets about £3 taxi ride.
If we were to go to penang again this hotel is going to be our 1st choice. While you are in penang pls visit the tropical spice gardens.

We spent two nights at Evergreen Laurel and liked our stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. The buffet style breakfast was good with plenty of different foods and dishes to sample and choose from. The hotel staff were friendly and accommodated our request for an early check in. The hotel's location near the waterfront was good and there were plenty of eating/shopping places nearby, but we had to use taxis and public buses to get to most tourist attractions and sites in Penang. Overall, we felt the hotel was good value.

Good and clean hotel. Nice location along the sea but a bit far from the old town (25-30 minutes pleasant walk). Breakfast could be better. Rooms with seaview are nice. TV programmes are limited. Free internet connection in the rooms, a major plus as far as this traveller is concerned (as a matter of principle). This is the 21st century!
Tip: taxis charging high prices and refusing to switch their meters on (when they have one). On one occasion, we booked a hotel limousine and were given a price. The limousine was then declared unavailable and a normal, old taxi was called by the transportation desk. We were requested to pay the same amount as for the limousine.
