“Underated!!! Should be accorded 5 stars!”
Reviewed April 3, 2012

Booked this hotel on a business trip and stayed over the weekend. Pleasant hotel, a bit dated but adequate. Check-in was a breeze....got my room and was happy with the cold blast...strong aircon. I guess my room was for a single occupant as there is one bathrobe and 1 pair of slippers although there were 2 of us. Room is big and airy and one thing to highlight, it was so pleasant smelling!! Like a sweet bouquet of flowers...NICE!!!! Everything is complete from bathroom accessories to hair dryer, safe deposit box, kettle, tea/coffee and a full mini bar. LCD TV too with in-house channels. Oh forgot abt the fruits in the room, and little Mentos sweets. That was a nice touch although Chocs would hv been better!!! The king sized bed was comfortable with nice duvet and pillows. Two extra pillows available in the wardrobe. Free internet (LAN line) but have free wi-fi in the lobby. Should maybe migrate to free wifi for all floors? When check-in we were given free welcome drink vouchers and some vouchers for the spa (did not use). We went for our drinks at night at the lobby lounge and a band was performing up to 1.00 am...great ambience and a big screen was available for football lovers...In terms of location, right smack in Gurney drive amongst the eateries and beach...although facing the beach, there is not much beach front...only a public stretch...those who've been to Penang would know what I mean. But lively part of town at night...and nearby Gurney Plaza...the popular shopping destination. Maybe 10 mins walk? Those who drive will find this hotel very convenient as there are ample parking in the building...GREAT hotel...old but does it's job!!

Room Tip: Don't need the sea view rooms as there is not much of the sea to view anyway...get the city view...

Spent 3 nights here. Chosen for its location on Gurney Drive - great if you want to be near the main town area rather than Batu Ferringhi (where all the beach resorts are, but on the other side of the island away from most things).
Great local hawker food stalls just a hundred yards down the road, or an even bigger hawker centre next to Gurney Plaza about a 10-15 minute walk down the road.
Gurney Plaza is great for high end shopping, if that's your thing.
There's a good buzz around Gurney drive with lots of cafes/bars open late. And the locals all tend to congregate by the seaside pavement to just sit and chat at night.
The hotel itself is standard 4 star affair. Decent gym and swimming pool. Not too busy compared to the G hotel down the road but in my opinion this is a bonus, since the swimming pool wasn't filled with kids and only ever had one of two other swimmers in it. Same for the gym.
Rooms are spacious, comfortable, clean bathrooms. Friendly staff.
Only drawback is no wifi in the rooms, there is a free wired connection though.
Big positive is the hot and cold jacuzzis (separate male and female) along with the sauna and steam room.

There is no contact info or email address on hotel website so posting this info here. While staying at Evergreen hotel my credit card was compromised either within the hotel or via their internet so security needs to be looked into. Staff v pleasant but service quite slow.Hotel OK but really needs some updating - v dated appearance. Quite far from anywhere and taxi to georgetown and surrounds costs 45-50 RM. Apart from credit card security nothing particularly wrong but nothing particularly right. Would not stay again.

Stayed with wife during my penang's trip. Actually i been stayed at G hotel day before, as to compare with evergreen hotel, so i give a try....booked room with sea view without breakfast approx rm300 ( include tax).

pros:
1. room is very classic with wooden decorations
2. room is a bit old but clean & tidy
3. good view from the room
4. free parking
5. lots of eateries around, and about 1-2km from the gurney hawker food court.

cons:
1. no wifi
2. although it's 5 stars hotel, but is quite old so don't expect too much

summary:
i will stay here again if i come back to penang.

We had to make a last minute overnight trip to Penang but could not get a room in G Hotel, our hotel of choice. Someone recommended Evergreen Laurel also along Gurney Drive, but managed our expectations by saying it couldn't compare with the hip G Hotel. We went there not expecting much but were pleasantly surprised to see that it was more than presentable. Service was attentive right from the moment we arrived at the door and the room was a good size. Whilst the hotel's decor does look dated, they are progressively renovating their floors. We had asked for, and gotten a renovated room, which was very pleasant, with new carpets and Grohe sanitary fittings. At a (corporate) rate of US$66 per night, one couldn't ask for more.

Its location is superb, situated along the esplanade with food stalls conveniently nearby. We walked the whole stretch of Gurney Drive early in the morning (about 45 mins) when it was still dark and were rewarded with a beautiful sunrise over the coastline. Buffet breakfast was a steal at US $6.60. Sleep quality could have been better as they only placed one pillow per person on the bed. I checked the next morning (when I should have done so that very night) and they did have extra pillows in the cupboard.

Overall, you want a decent hotel in a great location with a great price and service that one couldn't really complain about in Penang, this is the place.

Room Tip: Ask for the renovated rooms. They are changing the room carpets floor by floor.

This hotel is GREAT in all respects', Location fantastic, just a couple of kilometers' from Georgetown and about 25 minutes' from Batu Feringgi and right on the esplanade.
The rooms' are very cosy/comfortable. They have internet access but not wifi as yet, though upgrades are underway.
The location has many eateries close by, but we preferred the in house Laurel Restaurant. We had almost all our meals there, great variety and quality and catered for all tastes.
The staff at the Evergreen are exceptional. Every person during our ten night stay were just fantastic in all respects and made our holiday very enjoyable.
We stayed there last year and were very impressed. This year was as good and we plan to go back to the Evergreen again next year.
The hotel is showing just a bit of age, but then so am I, but with the upgrades it will be wonderful and well worthy of a visit/stay, we would never stay anywhere else while in Penang, we just love the hotel and all it's staff.

Room Tip: We have only stayed in the SEA facing rooms', which, for us and wonderful, but there is a city f...

Of the mid to upper range properties in the Gurney Drive area this has the edge (c.f. the Gurney & Northam Hotels). Pricewise similar, this has better service and the buffet breakfast is tons better. Ever so slightly chintzy, rooms are comfortable and of a good size. The 'G' Hotel up the other end has a swisher modern vibe but at a 30 - 40% premium for designer bathtaps; I'll take the good old Evergreen.
