“Decent Hotel along Gurney Road”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 6, 2011

I stayed in this hotel from March 9 to 17. My original choice was the hotel a few blocks away but was already fully booked. I wanted the hotel overlooking the sea so I chose the next best hotel along Gurney Drive, and it's Evergreen.

The hotel upfront is quite a simple building, honestly, no grandness at all, but the interiors are quite classy. The hotel is clean and all areas leading to my room feel and smell fresh.

Room size is okay (deluxe sea view) and offers a nice view of the sea. The room is lighted only by 3 lamps (bedside, sofa , table) and an hallway light. There is no other source of lighting so I feel the room is poorly illuminated at night. There may be others who like this setup but not me. The TV is 32-inch LCD with a few cable channels, T&B is okay, and the bed is average. The internet connection is fast - this is what I liked most in this hotel.

Buffet breakfast spread is above average, but there seem to be a problem on serving coffee or tea. I had to waive and ask for coffee on each of my breakfast there for 8 straight days. They don't approach the guest at all. They wait for guests to call them! The number of staff was not a problem, there are actually a lot who seem to be just gossiping and gathering in one location. The hotel needs to retrain their staff at the restaurant.

Just a few meters from the hotel, there is nice seafood restaurant named Bali Hai. A lot of foreigners and locals eat here, and the food is great. Better choices than the Buffet dinner at the hotel. Further down, about 10 minutes walk is the Gurney Plaza. At night, there are hawker food stalls nearby but was not able to try.

The hotel is away from downtown and they do not have free shuttle. Transportation is by taxi if you plan go around. If you want a cheaper ride, there is a bus stop at the back of the hotel near Starbucks. But you have to know the bus number of your chosen destination and bus comes around after every 15-20 minutes only.

Overall, this hotel is one of the best in the area, but do not expect too much.

We used to stay at another hotel but it's fully booked. So we choose this hotel. Everything's fine. Staff is ok but need more improve, a bit disappointment with service and children zone. The air-condition not working well at kids room. Car park is very good, clean room. What I like most is free internet.

An older house over all, but the management is mostly successful to keep it in good conditions. The staff is very friendly overall, exceptions included :-)
Not everything is perfect, but this is a usual situation in Malaysia and at least a matter of your expectations.
The rooms are clean, the aircon runs quiet, the furnishing is not new, but nice and in good conditions. The beds are pretty good, the bathrooms well equipped and free of mildew. Laundry service is reliable. If you are a light sleeper, beware of the rooms xx04 - xx08 and opposite side. The "Ringding" of the elevators drive you crazy!
Breakfast is focussing on Asian guests, but still sufficient for continental taste. The staff at Cafe Laurel is friendly but overall not very well trained from European point of view. The coffee makers are really an issue, because nobody feels responsible for refill and cleaning.
Quality of dinner (buffet) varies from day to day, depends on the motto of the day and your personal taste. The wine is not too good there .....
The pool is clean and less crowded and over all an oasis of quietness and peace, disregarding the noise of the aircon in the left hand corner.
Overall: A good choice in Georgetown

Very bad experienced stay in this hotel. Staffs was rude and not friendly at all. Waited almost 4 hours to get our rooms. No drinks was given and not even an apology. Rooms was not clean and air-condition was not working after 2am. Will never stay in Evergreen Laurel Hotel Penang again!!!

There is nothing spectacular about the hotel but certainly, it wasn't horrible.
The location is nice enough if you don't mind a 15-min walk to the mall. There are lots of great food stalls nearby (the bak kut teh a few doors down was great, as was the Mr Pot cafe). I also found a Burmese temple nearby that was really serene.
The hotel - as many reviews have noted - is old and dated, but clean. My room was big but everything in it was old, except probably the TV. Also, I had asked for a king sized bed, and what I had instead was two mattresses joined together.
The pool, gym and steamroom/sauna facilities looked tired too.
The service was good enough. I've encountered polite and helpful staff at front desk. But they can be a bit lost.
When I checked in, I was told I as on the 9th floor and I ask if I could have a room on a higher floor. The guy said yes, and proceeded to book me into a room on the 7th floor. When I asked same guy what time does the shops open he said 11.30. But when I got to the mall at 1030, everything has opened.
And although when I asked for a cab to take me somewhere, I ended up getting a limo at a slightly higher price. Was told to get to a certain place it would be about RM$20 but it was RM$10 more for the limo. But it was a small matter because it was a v comfortable ride.
I didn't try the food there because breakfast wasn't included in my package. but that is hardly a problem, considering the amount of food available just down the road.
Ultimately, this is a good enough place if you're not fussy because for the low price you pay, it is actually rather good.

Staying three nights and writing this using the hotel's internet connection. First of all, forget the comments about aging hotel, everything is fine and functioning well without teething problem. Yes we did encounter one or two very minor issue and yes you feel the hotel is a bit old fashioned, but hey if you want a new hotel, go stay in a new one.

That done, I will tell you why I am coming back - the hotel's got great employees - really! From the front office to the housekeeping to the technician. I requested to change kettle as the one I have was a little dirty, done in less than 10 mins. Requested technician to fix the closet light that could not be switched off, arrived in 5 mins, very polite technician, warm and pleasant. This is one of few hotels in it's category where I feel very much welcomed and that the staffs are genuinely and sincerely caring and nice.

Plus the location is great as well.

Oh yeah, complimentary in the room internet connection, and the speed is not bad too.

Great for leisure plus business. Highly recommended.

I stayed in this hotel a couple of times with an average rate of RM 220/night. Room is decent size with all necessities you can expect from a hotel present. Rooms are cleaned as well. However the hotel is getting old and need an upgrade.
