“Charming!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 4, 2013

We spent 3 nights at E&O just last week... simply stunning. We booked into the Victory Annexe Superior Room with Ocean Views and were not disappointed. The room was just lovely, spacious and very charming. The Butler service is efficient, complimentary soft drinks and water daily from the mini bar and Cocktail Hour & breakfast daily in Planters was just and added bonus! The staff were extremely friendly and helpful and i would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. I shall definitely return to Penang and look forward to the next stay with E&O

The E&O is by no doubt the grand old lady of Penang. My experience with this hotel goes as far back to my childhood days in the 1960s. The hotel today has undergone extensive renovation and upgrade, which includes the addition of a new wing to the hotel. Overall the refurbishment has managed to retain much of the original ambiance of the place. The decor follows through from the original old hotel, including the retention of most of the period style fittings. We had a suite on the ground floor of the old wing (number 009) which opens up onto the garden/seafront promenade. In the evening when it isn't so hot, it is lovely to sit out on the patio to enjoy the scenery whilst having a cigar! The lounge area of the suite is very comfortably furnished and pleasant. The sleeping area feels a little tight, but the spacious and luxurious bathroom balances this shortfall. (one oversight: the "kiblat" direction arrow on the ceiling is facing the wrong direction!).
By todays standards, the service at this hotel is 5 star . However, it cannot match the service of the 1960s. This is a general observation and not just specific to the E&O. I suppose, in those days the client profile and client expectations were different; and the workforce had greater pride in their profession. Unfortunately, most of the staff at hotels today are young and have no idea of what service was like in the 1960s, and this is true even at management level. This, together with modern management practices of achieving set KPI, tends to depersonalise the level of service.

I recently stayed at the E&O in Georgetown, Penang from May 12th - 14th on business. I stayed in the new Victory wing. The rooms in the Victory wing are beautiful, well designed with wonderful furnitiure and appointments. (The photographs on the corridor walls are all beautiful scenes of Georgetown and historic buildings.) The E&O staff are very good: helpful, friendly and a pleasure. The breakfast buffet at Starkies was excellent and had a wide range of breakfast foods from Malayasian to western. Room service was very good and prompt.

The E&O staff was nice enough to show us some of the rooms in the historic heritage wing. These rooms are smaller but decorated with classic look and furniture. You expect Somerset Maugham or Noel Coward to just have stepped out! I would reccomend the historic wing for vacations.

I would reccomend the E&O to anyone lucky enough to have reason to visit Penang.

Room Tip: Victory wing for business and heritage wing for pleasure.

Stayed 2 nights at Victory Annexe Superior Suite during the Vesak Day long weekend. Love the view of the room as it faces the sea. Location of the hotel is great as it is within walking distance to all major attractions and the famous street food. In fact, we walked from the hotel to Ah Leng Char Koay Teow@Jalan Dato Keramat which is a good 30-min walk. Guess we have more excuse to gorge ourselves on all the great street food. The hotel also provides canapes & cocktail from 5pm to 7pm at level 6. Overall, we enjoyed our stay!

A wonderful hotel at a good location. Nice and big room. We stayed in the Victory Wing. All rooms are facing the sea front. The location is quiet and we love listening to the soothing sound of sea wave at night. Bath room is huge, no problem with the wifi. Car park is free and extremely convenient. Abdullah did a wonderful job in keeping the customers happy by introducing different types of roti. Other than that the breakfast is just ok comparing with a 5 star hotel. The only complaint is with the person who is doing the fruit juice. He has no motivation and doesn't really like serving the customer. It took us half an hour to get a glass of freshly squeezed apple juice whist he keeps on ignoring all customer request by peeling oranges all the time. At the end the manager has no choice but to take over. Unbelievable! I think the management and team really need to our their acts together to improve.

Dear Valued Guest,

It is great to hear you enjoyed your overall stay with us in a spacious seafacing
room at our new Victory Annexe wing, including the facilities and our convenient
location. However, I am naturally concerned there were aspects that we could
have done better and I am very sorry for the shortfall in service.

I only wished you had informed us of your encounter with the particular employee
at the time as we would have done our utmost to rectify this. Nevertheless, please
be assured that your comment has been taken on board for some detailed action.

As we plan for future improvement, I have also noted your comments regarding our
breakfast.

Once again, I regret for your experience and thank you for your valuable feedback.
It is our sincere hope that you will visit us again.

We stayed in E & O Hotel in Mar 2013. We booked a Superior Suite at the Victory Annex (new wing), which entitled us access to the Planter Lounge at level 6. They serve finger food and cocktails from 5-7 pm, a great way to chill-out. The outdoor seating is highly recommended especially in a windy afternoon/evening. The seats are facing the infinity pool, directly overlooking the sea.

The Planter Lounge is also a place serving continental breakfast. However, the selection of food is quite limited. If you are after hot food (wider selection, including the local cuisine such as Char Koay Teow), go to The Sarkies at level 1.

The room was absolutely awesome. It was very spacious, with balcony facing the sea. The bathroom was huge. There are 2 basins, For-Him and For-Her, with the respective amenities (eg, shaving cream at the For-Him basin only), which I find it interesting. So are the For-him and For-her slippers.

The location of the hotel is good. It is walking distance to food center (Red Garden nearby serves very nice local food and it is open even for supper). Taxi ride to Prangin Mall cost RM10, If you'd like to go for something different, take the trishaw for only RM20 (Prangin Mall to hotel).

I'd definitely be back again!

Room Tip: Definitely go for a sea-view room.

Dear Valued Guest,

It is great you enjoyed your overall accommodation experience and our convenient
location. Our convenient location with close proximity to shops, cafes and places
of interests is one aspect many guests would find it beneficial.

We are happy that you were impressed with so many aspects of the hotel in particular
the presentation of your Suite with a nice seaview at our new Victory Annexe Wing and
the amenities provided.

I am delighted that you were able to experience the complimentary drinks and canapés
served during the Planters Hours at our Planters Lounge from 5pm – 7pm. Guests staying
at the new wing may choose to have their breakfast either at the Planters Lounge with a
different ambience or the Sarkies Annexe Restaurant at Level 1 which serves daily buffet
breakfast with a wider selection.

We are most pleased that your experience at the Eastern and Oriental Hotel was enjoyable
and are even more pleased to hear of your return.

On behalf of the entire team, I would like to thank you for the overall positive compliments
and we look forward to the pleasure of having you with us again.

We stayed at E&O over the Wesak 3-day weekend holiday (May 24-26) - Penang is a great place to celebrate this holiday! We were upgraded to the Presidential E&O Suite which was twice as large as our home in the US. The hotel staff showed us to our room, explained the butler service, how to control the air conditioning systems, the showers, etc. They were very friendly and helpful, and seemed please to be able to give us this space to allow for our 20 month old son to run around. When spending a few hours a day hanging out in the hotel room while our toddler naps, it helps to have such a great room.

Our room overlooked the sea and had ever amenity we could think of. The only strange part of the stay was that the shampoo, conditioner, etc., was not re-filled (nor were the trash cans emptied) during the daily room cleaning. It was resolvable with a call to the butler.

The breakfast included with the stay was delicious and extensive. Lots of different cuisine.

The pool is lovely and the people at the pool were diverse...couples, singles, and families. The pool attendant was helpful with towels and quickly refilling your complimentary glass of ice water.

The hotel is walking distance to the major attractions in Georgetown and all the great street food! We have a great time and never used a taxi during our stay (even though the hotel was wonderful in arranging taxi service to and from the airport for us).

I would return to this hotel in a heartbeat. We had a wonderful stay!

Dear Valued Guest,

Allow us to thank you for taking the time to review this property. We are thrilled
that you had such a wonderful stay with us and greatly appreciate your kind
compliments on the areas that we have served you well.

However, I apologize for the inconsistency in the service provided by Housekeeping
where the amenities were not replaced. Rest assured I have brought this to the
attention of our Executive Housekeeper who will ensure her team takes more care in
providing a five star service to our guests at all times and that such lapses are
not repeated.

I am glad for your appreciation of the Suite upgrade and the assistance given by the
staff in ensuring that everything was well explained.

Breakfast is extremely important and our team of Chefs have created a variety of dishes
to suit any palate and I am glad that you found the breakfast delicious and extensive. I will
gladly share your compliments with the team.

Our location is certainly ideal with such close proximity to shops, cafes as well as places
of attractions and that you found this beneficial.

Once again, thank you for your patronage and we look forward to your return soon.
