“Wonderful atmosphere and location”
Reviewed December 2, 2012

Staying at the E&O has to be one of life's great experiences. It starts with the airport greeting (I requested the limousine service) and cold drink on hotel arrival to the free shuttle to their sister hotel in the beach area. The view from the lovely room, and the conservatory where you have breakfast overlooking the Straits of Malacca, is wonderful. It is within walking distance of some of the main attractions, including the fabulous Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion. The staff are excellent and so is the service - I requested an iron and it was delivered very promptly and excellent provision was made for our late check out. My only suggestion would be to ensure that if there is an interconnecting room, the door should be bigger (or provide a draught stopper) to reduce noise, provide 2 bedside lamps, and the A/C, which was very efficient, could be a little quieter. The pool and pool service are excellent. All in all, a very enjoyable stay and I hope we have the opportunity of returning some day.

We last stayed in the hotel thirty five years ago and were pleased that the renovations had not destroyed the character and charm of the hotel. The staff are friendly and efficient. The suites reflect the colonial past of the hotel and are spacious with a large and well equipped restaurant. The buffet breakfast, which can be eaten on the terrace over looking the sea, is good and fresh.

The bar has a relaxing atmosphere. The main restaurant serves excellent food, with good service in charming dining room.

The pool is a nice size with good views of the sea.

This absolutely beautiful hotel from colonial days and in much the same general style as Raffles Singapore may be a little expensive to stay at. If so, go into Farquhar's Bar at least, settle into a comfy chair, order a beer, eat the plentiful nibbles and just enjoy the atmosphere. For such impressive surroundings, the bar food menu is not overly-expensive.

This was our second stay at the E & O, and we enjoyed it just as much this time. A large part of the charm is that despite the surroundings which hark back to the colonial era, it is much more relaxed than somewhere like Raffles, or glitzy chain hotels. The staff are lovely, the rooms are wonderful, sitting by the pool with a drink in the late afternoon was heaven.
I'm sure there are other hotels with better drilled staff, or more modern rooms or flashier pool areas but I always come home from the E & O much more relaxed than when I arrived.

We technically did not stay at the E&O in Georgetown, but spent two days ther two days there as our less luxurious hotel was conveniently located across the street. In an effort to suss out the high tea, we stumbled upon the poolside bar which had the greatest hummus platter ever and cocktails that served their purpose twice over (highly recommend the special mojito!). The nuts and olives provided were also delicious. There is beautiful view of the water from the bar and we will definitely be staying here next time!

Stayed here for 3 nights.

First impressions were of a wonderful colonial-style hotel of yesteryear. Spacious, elegant and with impeccable service.

The rooms are definitely spacious, with a large separate sitting area and huge bathroom hence the all suites appeal. Really did make me feel like I was in another age, the old fashioned switches for lights (imagine that), the comfy sofa, the reading light and the decor. A really pleasant change from the identikit designs of so many hotels these days.

If there was a minor point on the rooms, noticed the 3rd floor where I stayed had the smallest windows, not a huge amount of natural light. But then it's nice to have windows that can be opened.

As for food, I only had breakfast and a poolside snack. Breakfast was wonderful, with an outdoor or indoor choice by the sea. Pretty large selection, my favourite was the juice bar where they'll freshly squeeze your choice of fruit.

Poolside was nice, big enough to swim laps but the main attraction was lounging and enjoying the seaview and breeze. Smallish gym with basic range of equipment.

Bit unlucky to be staying when they had a wedding on..'boom boom boom' from the sound system till very late one night, whilst there's some construction work going on in a part of the hotel as well as the construction of a small pier which added a bit of noise, but overall still a lovely stay in a lovely hotel.

Room Tip: Go for lower floors, may be a bit more expensive but more natural light.

I need to mention the ''1885'' restaurant in the hotel, which is top of the line. We have been to many high end restaurants and we are very critical when it comes to food, but both food and service was excellent, highly recommended! Convert it to your currency and you realize what a great value it is.
The hotel was great too.
