“Eastern & Oriental Hotel - High Tea served 2pm - 5pm”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 1, 2012

We went to the above hotel for High Tea on arrival we asked the reception staff who were very polite, attentive and directed us to the appropriate restaurant which had a very colonial and posh feel.
We did ask before ordering if we were late at 4.30pm but we were assured that all food would be fresh.
The waiter advised us the food aspect is standard the only choice we had was a selection of tea's which we selected from a comprehensive list and ordered.
The High Tea arrived almost immediately with all the tea making paraphernalia the food presentation was good, however the sandwiches provide were dried and begging to curl the cakes were dry and over bleached.
So NOT FRESHLY prepared certainly not worth the money most annoying we did ask before ordering if the food would be freshly made to which the answer was a YES Sir.

Stayed in the hotel for 1 night. Very friendly staff at the reception. Gave us good advices for sites to visit in Penang.

The hotel has a free shuttle service to another hotel in the north of the Island. Great way to discover Battu Farenghi , and see the night market. We had dinner at the sister hotel Japanese restaurant - excellent sashimis :) -

Bad points are as follow :
-very rude staff at the swimming pool bar
- Poor breakfast if you are vegetarian and if you want you fresh croissant for breakfast

We had a beutiful stay in Lone Pine and we had great expectations for E&O. When we checked in they were confused with our debid /credid card?? They sayed that their system does not recognize it, ok it did in Lone Pine. Ok this was an small issue but still... We got room from the main building but we wanted to change it because it was bit dark. Ok they were really helpful to find an other wich suits for us, thak you for that. But still the rooms it selves are quite ok but some of the furniture are bit old and you can see it from them. Good example is old televisions (no flat screens). Other thing was that the toilet had a urine smell. When I mentioned to reception they cleaned it and the smell disapeared. After that we did not have major issues with the rooms exept I and the kids got some kind of insect bites during the night but when they changed the sheets ect. and sprayed the room it worked.
Hotel it self is like museum and its wery impressive and like going back in time. But if you are traveling with the kids there is basicly nothing to do exept the pool, wich was the warmest one ever. But.. due to high tide and waves they got so much seawater in the pool that they have to close it for several days. For us with two kids (8 and 10) it meaned that no pool for seweral days. So we decidet to change hotel back to Lone Pine in Batu Ferrighni. They organized the change wery smoothly and professionally with good room rate and private transportation.
After all the Hotel did not fullfill our expectations and the rooms need TLC. If you are traveling with the Kids prepare to spend your days at the pool because that's the only thing you can at the Hotel.

Recently stayed one night here and very disappointed with the value. While the hotel looks great from the outside, the rooms are quite spacious, and the hotel has some nice touches, the rooms are worn and the amenities minimal. Breakfast was sub-par compared to the other B&B's in the Georgetown area. The hotel was virtually empty and had the feel of a mausoleum. For a better, more personal experience I would recommend staying in one of the newer B&B's in Georgetown. Note that I am also evaluating the hotel based on the room rate.

We last stayed here in early 2007 so I have some historical perspective on this. We had a good experience in 2007; nothing great, but everything at least met expectations and nothing negative stood out. Back again in 2012 and they have built a new wing where the main buffet-style restaurant is located, above which there is a multi-story car park. Also new is a place called "Lone Pine" where guests can be shuffled out of the E&O to a beach. Admittedly, one goes to Penang to avail oneself of the what's outside the hotel (food and culture), but it isn't wrong to expect a perfectly poured martini, good food and impeccable service once you step back into one of the icons of Asia's colonial past (think Raffles hotel in Singapore or the Metropol in Hanoi), especially for the price you are paying for it. The quandary of the E&O is that we did not have one bad experience with staff (all smiles and politiness) but the surface did not match the delivery: Horrendous food; mixed up/slow room service and outright wrong food. Fish and chips became grilled fish and potato wedges; fried Bee Hoon looked like yesterday's buffet warmed-over and a cheese omlet that became, simply, an egg omlet. On a positive note, the one thing that was done properly was High Tea, although that failed to take the edge off everything else. It's tempting to theorize what's going wrong (the draw of talent to Singapore due to the new casino?, or the slow economies in the EU or US?) but that's not my job: I'm the customer. And this customer left after the second night of a planned three night stay. Simply put, money does not meet value at this property.

The Eastern & Oriental is one of the few "old" hotels left in Asia, by the sea and within walking distance to the center of the city.
I had booked a "Georgetown suite", requesting a "nice view". When we arrived, we were given a suite by the main road, with a view on three or four trees. As we could not accept it, we were offered a suite with a sea view but we were told that it would be noisy, as some renovation work was in process nearby. We took the risk and we did not regret it. The suite was very nice and the noise, only from 11.00AM to 5.00Pm (and not during the week-end, did not disturb us.
The Manager of the hotel was always around and very friendly. All in all, a very good stay.
The only disappointment was the restaurants, offering an average food. But the breakfast was good, with something quite unusual: fresh fruit juice on request, made in front of you. A big plus!

Room Tip: Don't take a Georgetown suite if you want a sea view. If you arrive by car, don't go to th...

We're happy with everything from the efficient check-in, to our spacious room, the beautiful poolside, the helpful concierge etc. The breakfast was a disappointment though. The spread was good but the service was horrible. My omelette was pathetic and I swear I can do a better one (and I hardly cook!). We had to ask for coffee 3 times before we were finally served. Staff were slow in clearing away used plates (is that why there were so many crows flying above the area?) If there's an option to book a cheaper room without breakfast, do it. I'm quite sure breakfast at the coffee stalls outside come with better service.
