“Not a three star hotel”
Reviewed November 7, 2013

I really do not like writing negative reviews but this one deserves it.

We booked this hotel as the rates were reasonable and it was more centrally located than other similar starred hotels we have stayed in here in Penang.

However, being a 3 starred hotel is misleading and here are the reasons:

1- we asked for a non-smoking room. Granted we may have got a non smoking room but the rest of the rooms on the floor must be smoking rooms. The smoke in our room permeates the curtains, the walls and the linens. There is no strong circulation of air although it is centrally air conditioned but we cannot hear any fan let along adjust the air flow.

2 - it's dirty. The walls have stains in numerous places. The carpet feels like one does not want to walk in bare-feet, the windows are smeared and the room is dingy in overall appearances

3 - the hotel charges for internet coverage but it is weak and not up to general standards we have experienced in Penang in the past. We came here to do business and were relying on strong internet to help with the work we had to do and we feel we are let down.

4 - the toilet leaks making the bathroom floor a mess

5 - the response from management has been weak. There has been very little attempt to address the issues brought to their attention by either not charging for the internet, offering to repair the toilet, change rooms to a cleaner and less smoke infested room etc

The one positive note is that we do have a nice view looking to the north over the water and harbour but it does not make up for all the negative aspects.

Located in World Heritage Town, the hotel is at walking distance from major attractions like City Hall, Fort Cornwallis. The hotel is clean and maintained well. The rooms are very spacious and provide superb view of endless water. The buffet breakfast has limited but tasty options.
You can find a couple of south Indian eateries close by. They serve great, inexpensive food and you can refill your water bottles too. There's a taxi stand next to the hotel which operates at government governed rates. You also get cycle rickshaws who take you for a rode around the town.
Evenings around the hotel get very lively with a few night clubs right behind the hotel. Many guests in the hotel complain about the late night noise from the club but you don't mind if you are the one who's partying.

Stayed for a couple of nights recently and had requested a quiet smoke free double room.

Got a noisy smoking twin room.

All of the double rooms are at the back of the hotel which overlook a very noisy night club. All of the twin rooms are at the front of the hotel which is slightly better as is the view but if you ask for a high floor to try and get away from the traffic then you have to accept a smoking room.

The hotel was clean and not expensive but would I say good value -probably not as you don't get much sleep but if you are a youngester and want to party until the early hours then it's probably very good for you as you'd not be bothered by the noise of the nightclubs and it's well located andclose to them too.

The breakfast was dismal - just go and buy your own somewhere else.

We did request and offer to pay for the internet service but because of hotel rennovations (very noisy though the day) we couldn't have it. We were out during the day so the noise of the renovations was not a concern but if you want to lay in longer than 9a.m. forget it.

Room Tip: All double rooms are at the back and all of them you can hear the nightclub. Twin rooms are at the...

This hotel sits in the heart of Georgetown and is a short walk away from Fort Cornwallis. Actually you can walk around a lot of town from the hotel. cycle rickshaws are also available in front of the hotel and if you love street food you will be spoiled for choice. There is also a south Indian place which serves good vegetarian food at low rates.
Nearby are a lot of puns and you can go dance all night.
Now for the hotel. The room was spacious, clean and well maintained though the fixtures and furniture are a bit old. Ask the reception for a ocean view or else they will not give it to you. Even the view from other rooms is not bad.
We had complimentary breakfast coupons and the breakfast was decent with adequate vegetarian options. Overall a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Ask for a ocean view room at the reception.

bathroom and room are clean.
Parking is using card system, convenient for hotel guess to in and out anytime without go to counter to verify the parking ticket. A touch card system allow the guess to touch in & out the car park.
I stay at level 4, the housekeeping is very friend and helpful.
The breakfast is simple but taste is nice.
the only problem I found in this hotel is the air-con., the hotel is using centralize air-con. system and you cannot control the temperature.

Room Tip: Try for the higher floor because the nearby got pub, a bit noisy at night time. So, higher floor wi...

I needed a place to relax after a hectic month on the road & luckily booked this hotel. My room was huge with big airy windows looking out over the mountains & the ocean. My bed was big & soft, so I was happy to chill-out in my room & look out at the views from my window. Its location is very handy, too, with historic Georgetown within walking distance & plenty of places to eat just outside the hotel - Sup Hameed & roti chennai stalls just across the road! My only complaint would be that I was served by a surly receptionist upon my arrival & when I checked out I received the same attitude, no smiles or goodbyes, etc, but my stay was so satisfying that I can over-look this slight.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the upper floors facing Jalan Penang if you want ocean views.
