“Good choice, well located”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 14, 2013

This is a good choice hotel in Penang. It's located right next to the bus station, which is very convenient for trips to the national park or the funicular. It's an easy 15 min walk to the old centre and there is a great hawker market for evening food 5 mins away. The hotel itself is a bit old in terms of decor but very clean and comfortable. The staff are really helpful. Pool and gym are good - free bottled water is a nice touch. We got a great deal by booking quite late ( day before arrival). Would sty again.

for the price, and with the understanding that the hotel is already not that new, my expectations are slightly lower for this traders.

of course it can't be compared with traders KL - which was absolutely brilliant, for me at least

room is reasonable size, quite similar in size to KL club room

located just beside komtar, 18th storey seems to be highest level (club rooms are on 16th an 17th level)

what's excellent
> breakfast staff
- they put in effort to ensure that you are well taken care of
- friendly and helpful
- breakfast was above average

> staff at the club lounge and concierge
- helpful and seems slightly more experienced than front desk staff

what's not so good
> shuttle service to-from rasa sayang
>> bit of confusion due to the concierge and front desk giving different information. one said i could take the shuttle and drop at new world park, one said it's only for return trip from rasa sayang. brochure stated the free shuttle operated from all 3 of shangri-la hotels ... don't know who is correct, not that bothered, i found better places to eat anyway, but the things tourists dislike most (1) waste of time (2) confusion (3) being overcharged << so this incident was a 2 hits out of 3.

> check-in
>> took quite a while, room wasn't ready (then again i arrived before 1pm) ... luckily can rest in club lounge first ... and it did seem like the staff tried to get room ready asap upon my arrival.

> bathroom
>> musky smell (i think it's the shower curtain, and the ventilator looked to be spoilt ... no sound) ... could have asked for a room change, but decided just stick with it since the smell wasn't permeating into the bedroom and i wasn't in the room that often anyway

Room Tip: club room = higher floor for sure, and tea time (free food and drinks) + some other perks ... it'...

Located right beside 1st Avenue and Prangin Mall, Traders is a very convenient location. Originally chose the hotel due to an excellent experience at Traders KL, and I would say it's a pretty good hotel here.

The service here is excellent, Mira, the lady who attended to us, even came to check if the requested extra bed was placed in the room. The room is spacious enough, even though the bathroom's plug didn't seem to be working very well and some of the bathroom fixtures do show their age. Still, it's a good hotel, the beds are comfortable (and so is the couch).

Staff are very helpful, especially when you need to call a taxi. Overall an excellent experience, and I would probably stay here again if I were to visit Penang.

I stayed in this hotel with my family on 9 June - 11 June 2013 on the 12 floors. I have booked the hotel with Olotels and found out that the booking was given only one breakfast instead of 2 even I have indicated the room was for 2 persons. I never expect such trick from an international hotel website and of course I never and will never visit their website again.
The fault is not on the hotel.
My first impression of the hotel is "old" and need better maintenance or upgrading. I booked a Double Room - Deluxe and found that the room is a little small than I expect. There is no good room view in this hotel as the front view is facing a construction worksite of another coming up hotel. The workers started work promptly every morning. Expect some noise or a "morning call", perhaps for the next 2 years. The rear view is facing the old shopping mall.
The room was clean and the housekeeping staff did good job.
The breakfast in the cafe does come with basis selection of foods but the service of the staff were excellent.
I drinks tea only and not coffee. The staff have used the tea pot for both tea & coffee. The tea served come with a lttle bit of coffee taste.
Usually, we are served with tea or coffee, but in this hotel, the staff take their initiative to serve additional glass of orange juice for every guests. It is this small thing that makes me wanted to re-visit this hotel in my next trip and I will recommend this hotel to any of my friends & relatives who like to visit Penang.
The location is Ok, depending how you look at it. Many tourist's spot is within walking distance of 15-30 mins. If you enjoy walking under hot sun or wet weather, then it is fine. Given a limited choice of hotels in Georgetown, it is still one of the best location but of course this hotel is also not cheap. The surrounding is Ok with a bus terminal (komtar) behind the hotel, it can be a pro & con.
Overall, I will give this hotel a 4 out of 5 in my rating.

Room Tip: Never ask for the first room or the last room in the any floors, unless you want a adventure stay.

We stayed at Traders Penang in late June 2013. We booked and paid for our 4 night stay in a Traders Club Room (King) 5 months in advance based upon our great experience at Traders KL. As another previous reviewer has rightly identified, Traders Penang is not anything like Traders KL.

The recognition and reward we received for booking and paying 5 months in advance; and also as a returning Traders Patron was the allocation of a room directly beside the main hotel elevator shaft, Room 1701; which leaked hot exhaust and the noise created by four continuously operating elevators into the room.

Thankfully with the great assistance of a staff member (Lina) we were able to change rooms after one night for the remainder of our stay to a twin king single (beds pushed together) which was actually a much larger and more comfortable room. Go figure.

The hotel is very dated and tired as other reviewers have noted. One particular annoyance of ours was the air conditioning in the rooms being rather noisy but was bearable compared with the elevators.

The Traders lounge is tiny compared with KL and very cramped at peak periods (breakfast/cocktail hour) however the staff are very friendly and helpful. The range of food is not very broad and is ferried up from the main kitchen.

Apart from our first night, our stay was enjoyable. If it were not for this we would have rated our stay as a 4/5, however if we were ever to be in Penang/Georgetown again, we are now compelled to look broader to alternative hotels.

Room Tip: Avoid any room, on any floor as a 1, i.e. rooms 1101;1201,1301,1401..etc...as these are all beside t...

I stayed at Trader's for the week mostly for business. The hotel itself is very nice and within walking distance to pretty much everything. The reason for the 2 for 1 is that you can do day trips to the Golden Sands Resort on the beach for free. They have changing rooms with all of the amenities to make the transition smooth and trouble free.

So you get the city life with the shopping and nigh-life and during the day relax on the beach, lay out near the pool, and/or use other resort services. It is really quite a nice setup.

Room Tip: Make sure to use the free shuttle to the Golden Sands Resort for beach, fun, and sun.
