Hotel Jen Penang by Shangri-La
Ranked #24 of 87 Hotels in George Town
Reviewed January 23, 2012

With the myriad of choices in Penang particularly with the recent explosion of chic boutique hotels in line with Penang's UNESCO heritage listing, a hotel as old as The Trader's (formerly The Shangri-La Penang) is often missed or forgotten. Extremely well situated in the heart of Georgetown and just a few minutes stroll to most of the important sights (and the great food streets) within the core heritage zone, the hotel is perfect for travelers who want to explore the historical side of Penang and skip the crowded and frankly over-rated Penang Beach scene.
The hotel is 26 years old and has been "lightly refurbished" over the years, but to be honest needs a good makeover - even the Trader's Club (on the 16th and 17th floors) where I stayed needs some touching up. Saying that however, the real gem at this hotel are the staff who were not only professional, but also extremely friendly and obliging (if you are on the Club Floor, look out for Mr. Wan who has been with the hotel almost from the beginning and is a great source of information and cheer). The Trader's Club offers the usual - free wi-fi on both floors, use of computers in the lounge, free-flow of drinks and snacks and a rather nice breakfast spread. You also get to use the meeting room for two-hours which is great if you are in town for business.
The Shangri-La Hotel group advertises that "There is no greater act of hospitality than embracing a stranger as one's own". It was therefore great to see that the Trader's Hotel Penang being a brand of the group has certainly embraced this philosophy as well.

Room Tip: Get on The Trader's Club floor.

Proudly to say, although no longer managed by the Shangril-La group, yet the standard was maintained well after being taken over by another management.
Rooms were very comfortable. Easily accessed to shopping malls, eatery and other personal services ie: hair saloons, nail parlor etc... The hotel is located in town and is very convenient in terms of going places. Public transports can be found at every point. Local food is a must to try if you are from somewhere else!

Traders Hotel is a great palce to stay. Staff are amazing and nothing is too much trouble. Close to the town center it is surrounded by eating places and only 15 minutes walk across town to Little India and China Town.
The pool is in need of attention - due to happen from Oct 2012 when rolling renovations are planned - but still a nice place to chil out and read a book or two.

I will be staying here again.

Yes Traders is an old hotel, but after our favourite was booked (Yeng Keng), I thought I should give it a chance and I'm glad I did.

I figured that at the price of the cheapest room in Yeng Keng or the G which all my friends raved about (and we are SO glad we didn't stay at when we saw the wasteland that is gurney drive (picture a mangrove swamp, but with no vegetation or water and then add rubbish), not to mention the bad touristy hawker centre), we could stay at one of the best rooms at Traders.

One of the perks of staying in a club room is you get to check in at the club lounge, seated, with drinks in hand and the staff are very polite. You also get to check out in the same fashion and skip any queues in the main lobby.

The 16 and 17th floors are the club floors, we asked for a non-smoking room and whilst we were put on level 17 which is a smoking floor, our room did not smell at all (except for one time when someone smoked in the lobby) so if you're after non-smoking best to ask for floor 16.

The room is clean, bigger than Yeng Keng's crazily small 'mansion double bed rooms' and the air con and free wifi worked really well, no issues.

The food isn't great at Traders (we had breakfast at the club lounge which is small area but great with its free juice and soft drink all day and free beer during happy hour!) but you don't come here for the food, that's what Georgetown is for! Close to Lorong Selamat (which we walked to nearly every day) and about 15 mins to Chulia st where there is Little India, you have many more options and better tasting ones compared to Gurney and Batu Ferringhi (which Traders offers a free bus shuttle to everyday to their sister Shangrila hotels - just need to book at the front desk).

We used the gym, pool and massage services - all very clean and professional.

A new mall, First Avenue has also opened right next door to Traders and so if you're ever bored or craving more familiar activities than eating street food and water sports, there is a cinema, arcade and ample shops. Also, I'm not a coffee person, but thought I should note there is a Starbucks if you are desperate.

Would love to see this hotel refurbished but even so, on the club floor you don't notice as much so I'd still highly recommend Traders if you want a convenience and a clean hotel with some perks.

We spent two nights here on our second visit to Georgetown. It's a very nice, although somewhat quirky, hotel. When you walk in to the lobby, you think, "VERY nice". Then you get to the rooms and you think, "Well, this is very nice, but here's a carpet stain, and there is some nicked furniture." So, overall, you are left with the impression of a nice property in need of some updates. Having said that, I'd still stay here again. The price was reasonable enough and the location, while not dead in the center of historic Georgetown, was pretty darn good.

The Traders is very convenient for Georgetown, with good-sized rooms. The staff were very pleasant and helpful, and the breakfast buffet was quite good. There are many restaurants, cafés, and street hawkers nearby, so you can easily enjoy the wonderful Penang food.

The swimming pool is pleasant, & a decent size.

Unfortunately the hotel is beginning to show its age, and could do with a little refreshing. If you don't mind a slightly dated feel, & wish to be in town, I would definitely recommend it.

We liked our stay in the Traders hotel, Penang. The rooms are small but clean. The location is great with car park available in the basement. There are nice malls and dining options available near the hotel. The staff were helpful.
